His muscle strength may not be there anymore but his sense of the meaning of a piece of music (and conveying that to the orchestra) is as strong as ever. In 1967, Zubin took the Los Angeles Philharmonic with Andre Watts to Tehran, Iran for two nights of concerts to commemorate the opening of a new orchestra hall. His trip was particularly welcomed by Iranians (Persians) not only for his musical fame but also for him being a Parsi, the Persians who fled Iran during the Arab invasion about 1400 years ago. I managed to fenagle a ticket to the second night of concert. It was given to me at the gate by a Russian mother and daughter because the father had fallen ill that night and could not attend. The young girl and I exchanged many many smiles during the concert at the end of which I couldn't decide whether I had fallen in love with the music or the girl. I never saw the girl again but developed an appreciation for classical music that I have cherished and enjoyed to date. That was 55 years ago. Thanks Maestro!

The organist at my Methodist Church arranged for the church to give myself and another piano student a season ticket for LA Phil. This included a Schoenberg Gurrelieder, (puzzling for a 14 yr. old) Chopin 2nd pno Con. and much else. There is much subtle inflection and phrasing in Mehta's music making I have come to appreciate. I got to know the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion inside and out. Thank you for your LA Phil. story. Brucker composers with exacting structure but also seems to be telling a marvelous story in his music. I was in a college extras chorus for Mehta's 1976 Mahler 8..a lifetime peak experience. From Goleta CA.

Mehta’s choice of tempos (moderate, steady) and orchestral balances (medium to low instruments allowed to blend and expand their sonority, with violins, high winds and trumpets giving light and air to the mix) recall that same orchestra’s recording with Karl Böhm from 50 years earlier. It’s magnificent, but a tad magisterial. The LAPO studio version was more lively and just as assured (Mehta knew his Bruckner from his study years in Vienna in the 1950s). I’m not criticizing this account, Mehta is one of the most honest, musical and faultless conductors ever. His mid-1960s studio account of the 9th with that same orchestra is a desert island disc (Decca must have had an inkling that there was a partnership made in heaven). He could surprise with composers as diverse as Puccini (the Decca Turandot), Verdi (the NYPO Verdi Requiem), Mahler (the Decca WP 2nd), Holst (The Planets), etc.

One of the last legendary conductors along with Blomstedt and Muti... habe dies in Salzburg gehört in 2016, wenn ich mich recht erinnere, zusammen mit Mahler-Lieder mit Matthias Goerne.

Great performance and Mehta in his element. Interesting that the VPO invites back some of the older (retired) players you can see on the back string desks - for those who have watched this great orchestra over many years

…The VPO is aware every second to depend on the hands of Maestro Mehta. Music performed on top level. It also proves that music speaks for itself. It doesn’t need Derwish dances in front of an orchestra….mi piace moltissimo.

Really? You think the VPO needs a conductor in this music. You should be able to walk up to the podium, give a downbeat, and just say" knock yourselves out" and the orchestra will turn out a good performance.

Yep. The VPO is the band to play this symphony. Such a great showpiece for the principal horn, but the whole outfit gets a workout. Maestro Mehta is a brilliant conductor who serves the music first and foremost. When the orchestra refuses to stand and applauds the conductor along with the audience, you know that magic has happened. By coincidence, this concert took place on my 59th birthday. Wish I could have celebrated it here!

What a great concert! The orchestra plays beautifully and the conducting is not bad either. Mehta may look frail, but one can see that he is in full command. In an age of way too many shabby Bruckner performances, this one is a reminder of how phenomenal this symphony really is.

My first encounter with Mehta was a recording with the LA Philharmonic of music from Star Wars and a suite from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. That was in 1978. It has remained a favourite of mine. Yes he's frail these days, but boy oh boy his control is total.
