My brother is a retired math teacher. He has fairly conservative views. He never discussed politics with his students, but he had students approach him and call him 'far right' or 'right wing' based upon comments from other (liberal/Democrat) teachers. It seems to be common, if a teacher holds conservative views, it does not matter if they keep their views to themselves, they are vilified to students by liberal/Democrat teachers. Indoctrination of kids toward left wing views is totally accurate.

I visited the US from the UK last year and I was in the state of Missouri. As expected we ( I was with the mrs) did a LOT of driving , up and down the state. Although Missouri as a state is 'heavily armed' there was hardly any crime, apart form a bit in St Louis and a little in Kansas City (confusingly in Missouri, not Kansas) in the 'bad areas'. (code for 'Black' areas as described to me) ;-) Missouri is a 'Stand Your Ground' or 'Castle' State, meaning (for you non-Americans) if you go onto someone's property without their consent and especially with ill intent you could get your head blown off and the law is behind you 100%. The citizenry are armed, very much so! So it is rare for anyone to 'try any sh*t' because you will end up in a pine box under ground if they do so. The result is that everyone minds their own business, violent crime is the exception not the norm and no one f*cks around or there WILL be consequences. To impress a Missourian, show 'em. ;-) (They who know, know)

Accepting Strom Thurmond changing parties was an equally stupid thing to do, even if he was pretty much the only former segregationist Democrat to change parties. I grew up in Southern California and I can honestly say that my entire life I identified as liberal at partly because all I heard was that republicans were closet racists that were selfish and didn’t care about anyone but themselves and those like them. As I’ve gotten older and have actually gotten to know people that are conservatives have I realized that even a lot of people that claim to be liberals are actually conservative in terms of their habits and lifestyles. They aren’t republicans though because they don’t want to be mislabeled so they still vote democrat in spite of it conflicting with their actual views.

I very much liken this to the first live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. The Foot clan manipulate the young with fun and play and platitudes about ‘family’. So from the eyes of the young, all of the traditional adults are buzz kills and just want to oppress people with rules. But they don’t realize that the Foot clan is doing dastardly things behind the scenes and are grooming them to join in doing dastardly things (thinking that it’s justified). Two reasons that I can think of. 1. Modern Democrats are much more left and therefore collectivist. As much as the left likes to pretend they are open minded they are very tribal. If you are on the outside, they will destroy you. Just look at the examples Larry gives in the video. Also, if you are in the tribe, you can't take one step out of line or you become an enemy. 2. The democratic party was the party of slavery and Jim Crow for a hundred years. They like to pretend that the parties switched but that's fantasy. To believe both parties suddenly switched on such an evil ideology would be akin to both parties switching on abortion. Once the 1964 Civil Rights act was passed racism started its decline and with it the government and the party's ability to enforce it. But, that kind of belief in one's own supremacy and hate towards the "other" doesn't just go away. It needs someone else to fill the role of the evil and inferior "other" and that group are conservatives. And I'm sure someone will say, "but those racists were the conservatives of the day!!!" BS. Democrats like Robert Byrd, a senator and a KKK member died a democrat. They all remained democrats. I also saw this in my family. The older generation in my family (I'm 54) who were the most racist were all democrats.

His whole argument is terribly misinformed. First of all, the brand of conservatism most people subscribe to in the US, is, "Conservative-liberalism." Ideas like, "free-speech, "free press," "women's rights," etc, are liberal principles. Secondly, "Conservatives" are political nomads. In other words, this is a faction that split from libertarianism. This is why Conservatives are often smeared as "authoritarians" or "hypocrites" because they didn't want to adhere to the stringent form of "small government" that libertarians were calling for. Basically, there's no such thing as "conservative values" as they borrow from libertarians and liberals. And for the most part, they just roll with what's convenient for them at any given time. This was exactly the libertarian critique of them right before they split. They wrote, "when the question rose of what we were trying to conserve, some people chose power over principles."
