I've been to Saudi and didn't visit any of the expat areas. It's a very different country from the one portrayed in Western media. Everybody I met was incredibly friendly, kind and generous, and there's no sense at all that you are in an oppressive country.

The more I went, the more I hated it. And that was just as a tourist without paying taxes or insane rent for a shoebox.

I've lived in dubai since 2010, will definitely miss it when I return to the US some day. The issue, however, is unless you're Lindsay Lohan you're not going to settle down and grow roots here. It's not our home and we all must leave sooner or later. It's a transient place which feels forever transient, and for over 10 years now I'm always constantly aware this isn't fully, truly home and some day I'll have to leave.

The UAE is running out of oil, so thats why they have to build obnoxious attractions in order to focus more on tourism. If you tout UAE as being better than America than you value prosperity over freedom. Sure Dubai a nice place for a certain subset of expats (because they have a stream of money that the government can rely on to prop up the illusion of prosperity), but it's entirely greed driven and the luxuries don't extend to the lower classes. They exploit labor, they censor any speech that is culturally sensitive (so basically all speech that matters). The western countries have their problems but we have the solution in the form of Constitutions that uphold liberty for the most part, we just need to get back to basics in law and stop swallowing what the crooks in government are getting away with.

went on holiday to dubai with the family for NYE, we payed alot of money for tickets to a party. we were critical of the partys events that sold us to buy the tickets, such as fireworks and such and we complained a little that the party was lack lustre for ticket price, maybe we shouldve said nothing ? come the end of the night, My brother was attacked for being gay and chased out of the party. my father was held by bouncers while others beat him and i was cornered by other bouncers so i couldnt help any of my family. in hindsight i reckon we pissed off the promoter/party runner/owner with our complaints and this was our treatment for it. sure dubai might have benefits, but im 100 percent sure that if your not muslim you will be singled out for being a westerner in the country in certain circumstances and no one will help you as a foreigner

I’m always skeptical of countries with populations that are either the exact size, smaller or slightly bigger than just ONE Large American Metropolitan city. Saudi has a population of 35 million . It’s easy to offer amazing Benefits when your population is small, the ground is filled with a resource worth its weight in gold and the majority of the country is uninhabitable due to extreme geographic conditions.
