i think the lesson here is that any techneque can complement another.... i use contrast paints all the time. but then i use traditional painting after... ill dry brush do give me a base to work with then go back and do filters.. you dont need to do only one style or use one type of paint.. do what works best or you. ;P

You will find undiluted enamels can match acrylic layering. You can use any size of brush with enamel dry-brushing. Finish the deepest details first and then mask them with Blu-tac. You can once your dry-brushing skills with enamels matures you can get a glazing effect as well. The biggest issue we have today for mini painting is that acrylics have become the default goto paint. All types of paint have their strengths and weaknesses. Acrylics while improving over the years, its weaknesses remain dry-brushing. Such as chalking. When it comes to layering and blending oil paints are superior to acrylics. However, with oils, beginner painters will find the range of colours limited. On the other hand, in 10 years, acrylics may very well be going to be the paint tape at the rate it's improving. What I'm staying here is that style, technique, and paint type should be balanced to the desired outcome. The only issue is that we have been brainwashed into believing that acrylics are the best choice for everything and forget that nearly all techniques were developed before acrylic miniature paints were invented. Don't think I'm a hater of acrylics as I own more acrylic paints than any other type, but I'm a big believer in the right tool for the right job. It was a very interesting video. Thanks

Everyone should watch it, in order to learn how great dry brushing is! What a great content producer, who isn't posting videos with his same-old methods, while labeling it something different. I really enjoy colabs, creators should do more or them. I also really like when an artist gives thoughts and opinions on others work, in a constructice way and in a way that shows different styles. It would be interesting if you did something like 'improve a viewers model in 10min/1hour/a day' or something along those lines, with some thoughts on what the main strengths and points for improvements are.

Huh. First off, love all the videos, this one included. Second, I fundamentally like Artis Opus though I have some disagreements with a few things Byron sometimes said, which of course is fine. There are a lot of 'dry brushing is no longer trash' videos, this one clearly knowledgeable. I probably think it is overdone, I think a painter should know by now any technique done right with practice saves time and looks better. It is true, once, or for amateurs, drybrushing is considered trash but I really think that is no longer the case among people who paint a bit. I say that, meanwhile, we're onto the 'slap chop is trash' train, which is essentially saying the same thing. Spend time painting minis and learn, they're going to look better. Phone it in, and they can look okay and be done, just not as good. Basic, I suppose, right?

The synthetic ones just arent as good, they dont last as long. The plastic will bend at the tips. Sable brushes (well cared for) will last a long time. Also, well done for living up to the vegan stereotype and making sure you told everyone you are a vegan. Your ethics are irrelevent to the your question about using plastic brushes. I am curious if sable is more ethical than supporting the petrochemical industry...

“Dry brushing is trash” - cope for those who spend 30 hours wet blending only to realize at 3 feet away, their stuff looks the same as a dry brushed model. Have fun with your backlog!
@snowconesyrup2698

People spend 30 hours on a piece because they want to to look good on the shelf or in glamour shots not just 3 feet away on a gaming table. Yeah "drybushing is trash" is a dismissive and dickish statement but being a dismissive dick back doesn't do anything good for anyone.

Now compare them to the cheapest shittiest make-up brushes you can buy 😂
@rankcolour8780
@rankcolour8780 Жыл бұрын
Honestly make up bushes don't work so well for smooth hydrated drybrushing. They are perfect for doing it the super dry chalky way but if you try building up layers it's gonna suck pretty bad. The hairs aren't dense enough so instead of coverage you end up just building texture with bad coverage. -Someone who tried.
@JuuzouXIII
@JuuzouXIII Жыл бұрын
@@rankcolour8780 really? I've never had an issue with coverage (maybe because I use in combination with a wet palette?)
@rankcolour8780
@rankcolour8780 Жыл бұрын
@@JuuzouXIII Then it's not the cheapest shittiest brush you can buy. The bristle density is nowhere near the density of a propose designed dry brush. The shape and body of a brush is important. That's why people prefer custom designed brushes with a good quality body. Anyone who can paint well with a shit brush, can get a better result with one that isn't shit unless they aren't trying or are aiming for a low standard.
@JuuzouXIII
@JuuzouXIII Жыл бұрын
@@rankcolour8780 I mean you don't use drybrushing to paint things well in my experience. Sure they can look good but if you're planning to paint something well then you steer clear of techniques like drybrushing. I paid £1 for a bag of 7 makeup brushes so I'm happy to save the vast amounts of money to get results that are good enough for what I'd expect from drybrushing a miniature. It'd be like buying a £50 shade brush to slap a wash all over your mini slightly more efficiently 😅

I’m sorry as I am sure this will make me unpopular but I personally do not like dry brushing at all and I do think it’s trash for miniatures, the affect from far away is great but the texturing it causes (no matter which method you use to dry brush) just looks ugly and ruins a model (IMO). As much as I would never say this to a person who has painted a model using dry brushing and is very proud of it, inwardly I would always think if only they didn’t dry brush it would have been a lovely model. For me dry brushing is only good for bases and scenery. Sorry However you did a great job making this mini look great. I do feel however it was more of a rescuer job from the dry brushing paint job

I think drybrushing, like any other technique in painting, has useful applications and less useful ones. You mention bases and scenery for instance, but what about fur? Scales? Really textured skin like the GUO? Really flat surfaces that you *want* to add texture to for more realism? Just like I wouldn't edge highlight an entire model as the only way to paint it, it's a tool in the toolbox and I think it warrants use some of the time
