Billy Gibbons is a huge car enthusiast and this 1933 Ford Custom is one of his prized possessions. Videos like this are why MTV was invented and ZZ Top was already about 15 or more years into their career, so they weren't really "young" at this point. They were well established, but the MTV thing was new for them. Also, this song is about to be 40 years old and it still sounds as fresh as it did in 1983. Basically, ZZ Top will always be timeless!

2:26 "I bet this was the coolest thing at the time!" You have no idea. MTV was brand new, and more and more towns were "getting the cable" opening up new audiences. A few enterprising artists took advantage of this new medium to propel their careers: Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, Madonna, David Bowie, Pat Benetar and of course, ZZ Top. ZZ's videos were beloved, and we all couldn't wait for them to come around in the rotation.

After nearly 20 yrs of playing every dive bar and juke joint on the Gulf Coast, ZZ Top finally hit the pop music jackpot in 1983 with the multi-platinum selling , "Eliminator". The old hot rod coupe was a feature on their album covers and in all their videos back in the early 80s. The car was transformational. In every video people got into the car with one personality, then came out with another. They went from loser to cool just by being in the car. And whoever had the keys could make it happen. So the band, being the ulitmate in cool could share some of their cool with the common person. This is pretty much the same theme to the video for She's got Legs and Sharp Dressed Man. The picked-on nerdy girl or guy gets into the car but the hot chick or studly man gets out. It was a fun theme running through their videos at a time when the video mattered and was its own separate expression of art and often had nothing to do with the lyrics of the song. The videos were just short movies with the highlighted song as background music.

There's a great anecdote out there about how Billy Gibbons attended a Depeche Mode concert back in the early 80's, trying to figure out how to make ZZ Top music sound more "energized" than what they had been playing up until then. And since New Wave was becoming so popular, he really wanted to know what DM was doing with their instruments to get their kind of electronic sound. So, somehow he made it backstage to try and talk to the guys, and when he did one of the DM boys said something like, "It's really nice to meet you. But why in God's name would you want to meet us?" =)

No one cares about guys writing songs about wanting to hook up, it's when they're talking about rape, drugging and using women, sexually harassing women, etc. that is the issue and we take offense to.
