You skipped step ONE..disconnect the battery, so there can be no accidental starter engagement, ask any 4 finger mechanic why.. I have 3 friends that have made that mistake over the years.

Good job, brother! I love bringing ‘em back from the near-dead, or even just forlorn, like that one was. I’m starting to see the wisdom in going with the solid mount Evo Sportster for just about any kind of project one can imagine, and not break the bank. Love the Dirtster; that would probably be my path, but a ‘Tracker style could be quite lovely too. Only thing, on a tracker they don’t look right unless you “back-half” it and rebuild everything from the tank, back

Just stumbled onto this content, I’m a follower! I can’t think of a better thing for an old Sportster than to make it a Dual-Sportster or Dirt-Sportster! Get that pile of iron to scale at less than #400 lbs, and you’re golden.

I did heat up the area and put a wet towel to rapidly cool it. It takes the stress out of places that would flex

@@noobology7895 a till death cycles dampener will add 2 inches for a lower price than tubes. But a set of 6+ tubes can be available through many retailers such as tc bros. Personally I liked using a 4inch extended tubes and extended dampeners to add travel in your front end

@ I like lean to an extent. Aluminum block on the bottom (drill and tap with a flat head Allen bolt) but I would keep it to a minimum. Maybe a heavier spring if possible if the block weighs down the kickstand!!

Wow!!! I love the trail bike look for the iron head. I seold my iron head and bought an xs650 . I just put a permanent magnet magneto and a capacitor. jockey shift and a thumb throttle rounds out the awesomeness. I might put the clutch on the shifter though. Great job brother. I hope the bash goes well. I am down in PA....

I love my old xs650, have a few motors on the shelf. Both this and the xs are tracker style bikes. Much fun but haven’t rode it much since they stopped doing the most local hillsclimb races.

@@SlappysGarage Thanks brother. Maybe we can go riding sometime...I am down in Pennsylvania...Iwill not be making it to the show. Maybe next one. I would really love to do the EL Diablo Ride again. I was hit on my 1957 Panhead two years ago and nearly lost my right leg and had a blood clot so big that the surgeons said they had not seen in 30 years. An F350 clipped my rear fender and flipped me up and around a telephone pole in front of my house and kept going. I am back on my feet finally but it was a hell of a journey.

Check steering bearing grease, did the welding melt out grease? gas tank good work. when you get better with the welder you will go and do some great work, it is all about the self-satisfaction and pride, you built it, and it is looking good. where you at, maybe I will pay you to build me one too.

@@rileyhicks8421 it’s a cheap thing to do, it’s just an o ring so I won’t have to every time. But it’s cheaper to do it for at least the first time then to pull your primary off to do it the second time

Instead of denting the gas tank I think I would have cut it and weld in a "tunnel". And the braked, I would mounted the bolts from the top. Then they wouldn't fall out if they unthread. But that's me... there's more then one way to Rome 😅

@@cjbat8794 all depends on the used parts market. Mids, 250ish plus an inner primary (wideglides don’t usually have a mid shaft hole) 100-200ish (would be cheaper to have yours machined out if you know a machinist). Plus gaskets would be 400-500 in total. Chain drive kits can be 250+ without labor you are looking at $650-750 in parts. Now both are necessary to remove an inner primary so if you want both it’s best to save on gaskets and do them together

@@marcodavila3858 this is a 4+ tube with a +2 on the dampener, till death cycles sells them and can be either +2 or +4. So it’s sitting about 6 over

@@Ldog2016 just a lot more wires, to cleanup, for a swingarm chopper. Personally I’ve always like carburetors it can make it much easier to clean up the harness converting it!!
