I only read The Love Hypothesis when it first came out and felt the same as you about it. I do plan to read Bride, but now you really make me want to read Check and Mate! I loooooove books that have competitive characters and plots, so I have a feeling I’ll love this one(:

Now I'm wondering how you'll rate the upcoming Ali Hazelwood book, considering that it'll be a college/NA steamy sports romance. With the basis of a "fling becoming more" I feel that there be a lot of spicy scenes (similar to Not In Love). And if you'll add the novella series in your AH ranking, too (or consider reading them).

I’m def going to be reading her new release, I loveee sports romances HAHA. I don’t think I’ll read the novellas unless I’m in a super-romance mood, but who knows !! :’))))

I haven't read her YA novel or her latest adult, but I agree that her books are fun and not trying to be too serious! I gave Love Theoretically 4 stars and the other ones 3 stars. The galaxy leggings lmao that whole book was just one huge millennial stereotype tbh

I agree with your reviews! Absolutely loved Check & Mate, though I'd put Not in Love at the bottom. I didn't realize it was straight up erotica and got super frustrated when the plot kept getting interrupted over and over and over again for what felt like the same scene over and over.

See, I just don't like any of the premise of The Love Hypothesis. It's not the age gap, but the power gap. I just think it's so unethical that someone who is a professor, who has any role whatsoever in the development of a grad student's career would be having a relationship with said grad student. (Yes, I know he's not her advisor, but he's in a lab nearby, presumably in the same meetings, could be collaborating on projects or could have a role in her thesis advisory panel.) If it were a grad student and a post-doc, sure. If it were a grad student and a professor in some completely unrelated department, and they just met in some cafe and have no professional relationship, sure. But a professor in the same building is likely involved in similar work and it just seems both shady and a problematic power dynamic. So I'm just not able to get behind the book on the very principle and it honestly turned me off. If the book is different and better than the premise, then great. I'm glad it's better than the blurb states. Still, based on your commentary about the main male character, I think a lot of what he tries to do to help students is negated by him dating a grad student. The author could have easily fixed that by him being from a different department. There could have still been a reason for them to have their chance encounter, or a reason he would have visited the building on a regular basis, and let the book go from there. He could have still talked about wanting to help students' careers, etc, but in the context of being a professor in a different department. And hey, maybe I'm again very wrong and misinterpreting the blurb and they really had very little career overlap after all. In which case, my bad, just ignore that whole paragraph- I'll feel duly sheepish and apologetic. I'm a lot more used to the 'a-hole' type professors being much different. For example, I once briefly worked in a lab where the PI in charge was married to the lab assistant and I didn't even KNOW that they knew each other beyond a professional relationship, let alone were MARRIED. I knew that the lab assistant had a daughter (from a previous relationship, so a stepdaughter to the PI) because the daughter also worked in the lab and she once called her mom "mom" instead of by name. But the PI also treated his stepdaughter like a stranger. It was SO WEIRD. They were more cold towards each other in a professional capacity than even regular coworkers who are friends. (I'd very much hope they were better than that at home, but gross, I don't wanna think about that.) So, yeah, that's how I think of romances in a lab setting. And the only way that it was remotely appropriate for a lab setting like that is because the wife was not the grad student whose professional development depended on the guy she's married to. She was an extremely capable lab assistant who didn't seem interested in getting further degrees, etc. So in this sense, they were working on their research together- with a bunch of grad students and undergrad and post-docs and other random employees being exploited in between. (I could write a book about that lab. The professor also expected people to work an insane number of hours, etc. Overall, I'm glad I have a job where all I have to do now is work my assigned 40 hours, but I get overtime if I'm there extra hours.) Also, I really agree with you about all the women in STEM discussions. I'm glad that Ali Hazelwood can have these discussions in the books. I just wish maybe some of the actual relationships were less problematic. But hey, what do I know? I am married to a (former) coworker who was the only man in the workplace who didn't treat me poorly. (Ok, I overexaggerate- some of the other guys there were decent folks, but I didn't get to know them until later- after I was already in a relationship with my now husband. All the guys who were on 3rd shift with me were stand-up individuals and we had a good time as coworkers. I never had to worry about them. Once I went back to 2nd shift, there were a lot more guys I had to worry about again.) I don't remember what character you said that about- where all the guys weren't taking her seriously as a colleague until the love interest told them to. I can relate to that because something similar happened to me. I think I could really enjoy Check and Mate, that's like a YA, cause YA romance tends to be more fun for me to read. (I like the silly drama, more than I like a serious romance or the smut.) All this said, I'm a lot more willing to give an author I used to be skeptical about a chance because you were able to provide much more in-depth analysis of the books. Thanks for that!

I’m glad you might pick up C&M, I truly enjoyed it so so much - after reading some GR reviews, people say they think it lacks the romance aspect they were looking for, but I think that’s probably why I liked it the most! There’s a sprinkle of romance but we really follow Mallory as a young woman kind of growing into her passions and understanding about herself - all the while laughing about the over the top sometimes cringey dialogue LOL - I think out of all her books, you’d probably enjoy C&M the most IF that, as there are less of those uncomfortable power dynamics at play. As for Love Hypothesis, I COMPLETELLLYYYY agree w you that it feels out of place and could be taken in a not-so-good light. I will say, she does kind of make those disclaimers throughout the narrative EX he bows out of any involvement in her thesis advisory panel, they’ve never collaborated and never will moving forward, BUT I had the same reservations as you and I’m not trying to defend it in any way. I think if we’re going off the blurb and not the nuances in the book, you hit the nail on the head. I’m sorry that you had a similar experience as Bee in your workplace regarding your male colleagues :( that is SO incredibly frustrating and it’s awful how many of us can relate.

@@tiachu Honestly, though, thanks for mentioning it that he makes sure he won't be involved with her career. They should have mentioned that in the blurb or something, cause I can't fathom reading a book that just blatantly talks about a professor/student romance, unless they make sure to clarify that he's not HER professor in any, way, shape or form. (Hence why having him be in a completely different department would have been OK. Hell, I'd even be fine with it if they do collaborate on projects after she graduates. It's just while she's still a grad student that it doesn't work.) I even looked up spoilers to see if any reviewer mentioned it, but not a single person did. I'm just so surprised that book got so popular and no one had a single discussion about a student/teacher relationship or reservations about it, or clarifying that the author has a discussion on the topic in the book.

The Amityville book is most likely fake, bad stuff happened in the house. The next people who bought it, were underwater and there was never proof that any of the haunting stuff they claimed happened, they likely made it up to capitalize on what happened before they bought the house.

I never expected to love Ali Hazelwood books as much as I do! I only picked up the audiobook for The Love Hypothesis on a whim and then quickly found myself kicking my feet in joy. As someone who is very much NOT a science girly, I surprise myself by how much I love the talk of academia and science-y stuff in these books. I'm intrigued by the world and I never feel lost with the science talk (or chess talk), which I easily could be. Also, Ali Hazelwood writes some of my favorite MLs in romance books and I eat it up every. single. time. This was so fun to watch!
