In this video I drink a one year old ecosphere. It has been highly requested for years now that I drink a closed aquatic ecosystem, so to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the life in jars channel, we will find out: what happens when you drink an ecosphere?

hi! microbiologist here! i’d love to identify your germs!!! the “paramecium” around 4:31 is actually a ciliate in the genus Holosticha. you can tell because of it’s shape, cilia arrangement, and the fact that many cilia are fused together into “cirri” that the organism walks on like legs! the ciliate around 4:42 is a remarkable organism called Lacrymaria olor. it is a raptorial predator and can stretch it’s neck up to 8 times the length of it’s body! it’s so ferocious i’ve seen it rip chunks out of larger ciliates!

Hey sir microbiologist. Could he not get super sick from drinking this? I know in Florida wr have a few bacteria in lakes that are super deadly if they swim up your nose causing brain swelling. That's obviously different from drinking it but still it has me wondering how dangerous this would be. Either way I'd never have the stones to drink it lol, over my dead body haha

i think the organism at 4:15 is actually Holosticha! in the same subclass as Stylonychia. a bit smaller and thinner than stylonychia!

TL:DR- you're an awesome person and I'm worried about your well being and I hope you're okay This is going to be long winded and I'm going to pour my heart out here a bit Me and my husband have watched you for a long time on his account and your videos have brought so much joy and positivity to our lives. We even watch it with our son as he's starting to have an interest in science. We even plan on making our own ecospheres! It also seems like you've positively impacted a lot of other people through your channel as well. Your channel means so much to so many people and I'm sad that you felt you need to put yourself in harms way for the channel. I also understand that mental health can be a dark awful place. I've dealt with it a lot myself. And I know that in those dark places self destruction can come in many forms. I'm glad you didn't get sick from it. I appreciate that you do some approachable amateur science with this channel, and think I'd be more interested in seeing you perform some water quality testing instead of taste testing (pH before/after closing and reopening, plate count of bacteria, etc.). I once swallowed a mouthful of water from the Danube and became violently ill the next day and was pretty weak and barely able to eat for a couple days after. Stay safe and healthy in this new year!

I'd say if there's little dead organic matter in the jar and it's a healthy ecosphere, it's probably not that bad. With healthy plants in particular, it is actually like drinking lake water, which is also possible in some countries such as Norway and Sweden. But you definitely have my respect for it, a lot can go wrong with pathogenic bacteria, algae or toxins especially after drinking the whole jar... I am glad you are okay.😅
