thought i had; almost all these helmets dont have face protection. face protection means sacrificing vision. possibly in a large well trained army, the training and trust you have in your fellow soldier was enough to make up for the lack of vision, but in poor militias where they are not well trained, perhaps the visibility from not having face protection was worth it since you are more alone in a fight.

It's really fascinating learning about those specific little tailoring tricks that were used to give mail the necessary range of motion without making the armor extra baggy and thus heavier than desired. Thats been something I've wondered about since I came to the realization that mail can't function quite like fabric does because iron rings, in effect, won't stretch like a fiber weave will.

really good detailed video! very helpful for figuring out how to draw armor as well i always see the too-long breastplate in video games and ofc it always looks a bit funny, cause to make it still move with the character, they just.. make the metal stretchy/bendy lmao and ofc trying to make a costume/cosplay with that too-long breastplate design is a mess; even if its flexible foam its still gonna be super uncomfortable

Weird, most fotos of sobatons on the internet are of sabatons that have the next piece underlaping the previous where as these are overlapping the previous This is also how I designed mine, an my gauntlets are the opposite, underlaping

These were not for fighting. You cannot see shit from that narrow slit. There are types not made for human facial features, also. These are for protection and from the time humans shared a common enemy,; an electrostatic charge build up of mother nature.

It’s good to see you can get a full harness without any arming points on the gambeson. Figuring out how many arming points to get and where all those laces go has been a real sticking point for me, but it looks like most of the armor you have is self supporting or links up directly with the other plates.

The knight set from elden is so historically accurate but also isn't too plain looking. It has a closed helm without breathing holes, plate armor with a blue gambeson underneath that sports a golden design along the fringes. The armor and helmet also have simple ornate engravings on them. Its my favorite set in elden ring!

The infantry breastplates are still incredible works of art in my opinion. The the fact they are polished metal means they were worth a good bit on their day, unless that polishing was done by some silly Victorians way later on.
