Please excuse the short length, this is mostly an experiment!
Wanting to try my hand at something more cinematic, here is some footage from the Deed of Arms held at the annual living history event I help organize, Days of Knights, held this past weekend in Kentucky.

A super quick experiment: Wanting to try my hand at something more cinematic, here is some footage from the Deed of Arms held at the annual living history event I help organize, Days of Knights, held this past weekend in Kentucky. If you guys enjoy a more 'cinematic' style video from time to time, please let me know. I had a lot of fun making it, and would like to do more when the opportunities arise. *Some notes on the Deed of Arms* - Due to the number of fighters who have both the required armor of high enough quality to participate and the appropriate level of training, it is impossible to pair fighters with contemporary harnesses, so this style of Deed includes armors spanning the 14th - 16th centuries. The fighters in this bout are Bob Charrette (Churburg S18 Harness, ca. 1410) and Ed Borkoski (Wallace A30 Harness ca. 1520). Those with keen eyes will also recognize Ben from Pursuing the Knightly Arts marshalling this bout. This type of modern re-creation of single combat is based on an assimilation of documented rules in historical Deeds of Arms with restrictions on techniques and equipment in the interest of modern safety requirements and danger mitigation. Fighters are using the ruleset established in the DeKoven Concord. The bouts go on until a pre-determined number of counted blows are scored with the chosen weapon (dagger, sword, spear, or pollaxe), with some other unique victory conditions inspired from historical sources (like forcing your opponent from the lyst). Good blows must generally strike areas that would have been genuinely effective against armor had the weapons been sharp, like a well structured thrust to an armpit protected only be mail.

Knyght Errant Well, it was brilliant! I loved your attention to detail and authenticity, the aesthetic presentation, the music and everything else. This sort of content, as with practically all of your content, is sorely lacking on KZbin and it fits nicely into a largely unexplored niche- at least, as far as I've seen.

you should try the 300 style of slow mo. slow down right as a blow is coming in, then play normal speed (or at least a bit faster) as it lands to add emphasis to the impact. great video!

You're headed in a great direction on the video style, keep it up! Very classy. On a martial note... While I applaud their willingness to go at it in full harness, it doesn't look like these two fighters have studied (much, and practiced?) medieval techniques such as Fiore's wrestling. No offense to the gentlemen involved, and I'd love to see some videos of full contact half-swording & grappling demonstrating historical techniques from the sources.
@KnyghtErrant
@KnyghtErrant 6 жыл бұрын
One is a beginner, the other is a well respected instructor and author on Fiore. Sometimes allowable techniques are limited, and in this case, the more experienced fighter removed his pauldrons to allow the other fighter to at least have some easier targets to go for.

Cinematics are fine, but I would have liked some additional context, if not commentary - like, what are these people portraying (period, region, fighting style, etc) and more details of the equipment we're seeing (anything we should notice about their armor or weapons, any anachronistic elements, advantages or disadvantages in this particular situation)
@KnyghtErrant

damn, you gotta grab that suit to show off! love that armet. articulating gorget. its got those small ?wings? on the forearm to redirect stuff away from the back of the elbow joint. asymmetrical pauldrons. not a fan of the breastplate and backplate though. i think that suit is a reproduction of a historic suit if im not mistaken.

What is your thought on leg strikes ? I think its a really underappreciated target, most just say "just retract your leg and then hit the head" ... yeah, if only it was so simple in a real fight, where most of the time you are not balanced ideally, most guys are not prepared to protect the lower half, even though they wear leg protection there (someone would think there is a reason for this protection huh :) ) plus there are not many parries for this part of the body. I think one should be prepared to protect all of oneself, not just rely on a dodge which requires more preparation than a parry ( Becouse you have to shift a whole body and the leg attack is most of the time a surprise)
@KnyghtErrant
@KnyghtErrant 6 жыл бұрын
In single combat against a well armored opponent I think committing to attacking the legs can definitely open up some juicier targets on yourself. Unless you have a very good chance of getting to their groin or behind their knee, top of the ankle (basically the places protected only by mail or textile) you can probably best spend your energy elsewhere. Now if those legs are _unarmored_ things change significantly. The Battle of Wisby shows very high proportions of the dead suffered serious leg injuries on the skeletons that were found, so they were definitely targeting their legs which were lightly if at all armored.
@vedymin1
@vedymin1 6 жыл бұрын
Knyght Errant Yup, i was mostly thinking about blossfechten and hema, sorry for not specifying. But in armor, where your head is protected, one would think that getting to the legs could open many opportunities to unbalance the guy ( plus taking into account a generally higher CoG of a plated guy) and get him to the ground, don't you think ?

@KnyghtErrant

It's not intended to be removed. These swords have grips half-way down the blade for exclusive use in the halfsword. They rondel variant is not meant to be put in a scabbard.

I dont think slow motions works for this kind of stuff, it looks rather silly how they slowly poke each other. Maybe try taking different angles for an attack but at full speed.
@KnyghtErrant
@KnyghtErrant 6 жыл бұрын
I found the points of the swords difficult to follow to their targets at full speed. Maybe I'll try playing with full speed vs slow mo at different points in the fight. Thanks for the feedback. Besides, as a glutton for good armor, I just like seeing the armor glisten in the sun in slow motion ;)
@Evan-rj9xy
@Evan-rj9xy 6 жыл бұрын
I like the slow-mo, it's really cool to be able to study what the fighters were doing/trying to do. As someone who's not trained in armored combat but is very interested in it, this gives some really nice insights into their techniques. Still, it would be nice to have some full speed footage as well.

Knyght Errant you could try to made a faster (lol) slow motion, so that we see the movements but also enjoy the fight.
@benjaminchen8857
@benjaminchen8857 6 жыл бұрын
The problem in my opinion is not with the fast or slow motion. I appreciate both the ability to view each action in slow motion, but I think the "cinematic" (I think you mean dramatic) feel is undercut by how clumsy it looks in slow motion. I think if you want to try your hand in more dramatic videos, you might need to actually choreograph, or if you want more cinematic, pay attention to angles like OP says, or different music, going for a gritty sound instead of a epic one. In my opinion, it is best if there was commentary, given the footage available and how it was taken.

Does anyone here know where to find the 1281 document from padua which allegedly mentions the first bascinet?
@KnyghtErrant
@KnyghtErrant 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, I had emailed you back, but I suspect it might have been diverted to junk mail. The 'bazineto' is mentioned by name in surviving Statutes of the City of Padua, 1281, I can't quite translate all of the associated Latin but here's a digitized copy of a book from 1767 that published the statutes in question and the associated reference to the 'bazineto' Hope this helps: tinyurl.com/y7272zml

Oh, thanks! I don't know how to read any latin aside from very select words so the untranslated text is not very usefull for me. It is however nice that you could confirm that the text actually exists! :) I never check my junk mail but while I'm looking through it right now I can't seem to find it, sadly not the first time gmail fails completely at it's primary task... By the way, do you think the bascinet was developed from the skullcap, was designed separately or was based on earlier, nameless byzantine helmets? Like the very most right helmet on this ivory statue: ruicon.ru/images/arts/DPI/Iisus_Navin_s_vojskom_porazhaet_zhitelej_Gaya_Nav._8._1-28_._10v._Konstantinopol._Vizantiya._6_5_h_8_7._Stcena_iz_zhizni_Ieshua__copy1.jpg Appreciated to see that you reply to questions by the way! :)
