My best friend and I went to Big Bend in 1990. We were walking on a desert trail about 2 1/2 miles in when we came upon 25 men dressed like ninjas , their face’s covered the whole 9 yards. It was without a doubt, one of the strangest sites we had ever seen in our lives. We respected their privacy and kept on moving, but it was pretty freaky.!! That sounds like such a special and meaningful memory! It’s amazing to think about how your family has such a deep connection to Hueco Tanks. The story about your dad driving the family there in his 1937 Chevy paints such a vivid picture of a simpler time. I can imagine how much those memories must stand out, especially with the details like Feliz at the entrance and your aunt’s story of fetching water. It must’ve felt like a real adventure back then. Our favorite hikes in Big Bend National Park are The Chimneys Trail where at the end of the trail and you’re among the rock “chimneys” there are petroglyphs. It’s about 5 miles in and out and fairly easy. Ward Spring Trail is nice. I can’t recall the exact distance but it’s got a lot of scenery as you’re fairly close to the Chisos Mountains. Another easy hike is Lower Burro Mesa Pouroff. Only a mile in and out but so worth it when you reach the dead end at the pouroff from the mesa above.
