May have to fact check me, but I believe in an interview, it was stated that the decision to stick to toads was more or less influenced by the fact that the game was a crossover. I.e. they wanted to keep things domestic because the character count was already double as it was. Basically it was a conscious decision and wasn't influenced by Paper Mario's creative mandates.

My favorite part is how he unironically switches from complaining about never being tutorialized about that, to IMMEDIATELY complaining about "hand-holding". Instead of constant complaining, he should simply realize that boomers and children comprehend differently so the "target audience" will more easily see how mechanics balance and check each other where he sees a "needlessly difficult obstacle". Those children have zero issue discussing the challenge at school and concluding a new tool must be used rather than brute-forcing it.

If starlow ever makes a return I hope that she gets Karma for Luigi slander across the entire game every time she opens her mouth. Paper Jam Starlow is far nastier than Dream team and inside story starlow for no real reason.

Great video rewatching it again but Miyamoto doesn't actually hate story SuperMarioT actually made a really good video on this, I'd link it but youtube would remove my comment.

This remake is amazing, I wish they didn't kill most of the sfx, didn't fix the trouble center or add new troubles at all and make the dialogue so much slower and impossible to skip unlike the original but otherwise it's pretty much everything I wanted. At most I kinda wish there was a few new bosses, troubles or a boss rush mode but it's really good regardless.

I will die on the hill of this being the most charming Mario and Luigi game. People who say the sprites are less expressive than the GBA/DS ones must be blind because have you *seen* the Luigi thinking animation? And the cute animations they do after they perform successful attacks… I love it! If you watch the Luiginoids you can see many of them have unique animations too! The game may have pacing issues, but I simply see that as an opportunity to enjoy the charming visuals more. Also seeing how much Luigi adores his brother… it warms my heart. And hot take, I think the final boss music is better than BiS’s. The background for the fight really makes the music seem right at home.

Penacony looking pretty different in the Nintendo port, eh? HSR joke aside, I remember feeling really fatigued at certain segments of this game. Mainly the long stretches with only a few enemy types that you fight over and over again. Especially the bits in the dream where you fight basic shapes. I remember fighting the sentient drill bits in particular. Compare them to the colorful enemies in superstar saga and they just seem soulless.

Partners in Time may not be the best, but it is my favorite! I definitely prefer it over Superstar Saga and think Bowsers inside story is the overall best in the series. Couldn't get into Dream team sadly.

Sounds like someone didn't fight any enemies in Riverside Station, otherwise the banger of a theme that is chapter 6's rendition of the battle theme would've been mentioned. I personally enjoyed this remake and rank it slightly above the original. Most of the stuff they added was good (a lot of them you did mention), while a few aren't. Rawk Hawk's 'new' theme being a total downgrade and the two new bosses being completely not fun to fight against, to name some. Overall though it's a good game and remake... I still like the original Paper Mario a lot more however. The remake didn't change my opionion on that.

I've always imagined that the Bowser sections in Paper Mario TTYD were the main inspiration for them to turn Paper Mario into a platformer. Back when I was playing TTYD, I always thought it would be cool to see a full game of the Bowser jump'n run sections and with this game, they sort of did it exactly that!

The craziest thing for me about this game is just how passionate of a fan base it has. In every video about it, the comments are always riddled with people singing its praises and I rarely see anyone say negative things about it, even if the video covering it sees it a bad light. Also, every single comment saying that dream team is underrated just make me angry. This game is perhaps the most loved after bowser’s inside story, how can it be underrated?

I remember when I first saw the trailers for the remake, and I thought to myself “Oh that’s so cool. Maybe I’ll pick it up if I ever want to.”, since I had a Dolphin emulator and had already played the game a couple years ago. But then one trailer showed me that Hooktail’s Castle had a different battle theme, and I was HOOKED. I learned about the different character sprites and portraits, I heard that they made backtracking easier, and I needed to see what they did. If you’ve ever heard the phrase “Death by a Thousand Cuts”, then this remake for me was “Remade with a Thousand Healings”. They took a game with an already outstanding story and gameplay, and added/fixed so many little things that it just became so much more enjoyable then I thought it could be. Nostalgia Tunes badge for me basically solidifies that, unless you REEEEEALLY love the OG or modding that much, there’s no real reason to go back to it.

As a kid I had an absolute BLAST with Bowsers Inside Story and when I saw Dream Team was launching and that I has gotten a 3DS a year prior I immediately asked for it and luckily it was Mario and now GTA so my grandma got it for me DAY ONE and I remember having an absolute blast with it too, however I’ve replayed Bowsers Inside Story several times, I never replayed this one. I’ve been watching these videos on the playlist and haven’t thought to comment now but thank you for these comprehensive videos these are genuinely awesome!

I'm glad that they restored Vivian's trans identity, but I think they could've been more clear in explaining that Beldam increased the bullying after Vivian transitioned. The only thing Vivian actually says is "now their usual bullying feels heavier". That doesn't sound like the bullying got worse. Instead, it sounds like it's Vivian who is taking it to heart more. (Which has other unfortunate implications, but that's a different conversation.) It's not clear that Beldam's behavior has changed, especially when Vivian describes it as "their usual bullying". I think the line should've been: "It took me a long time to realize I was their sister, not their brother. Beldam wasn't exactly nice to me before, but ever since then, she's become unbearable." Something along those lines. In the original japanese script, Beldam was actively being transphobic by rubbing Vivian's biological sex in her face in front of everyone. That was changed in the first english localization to her just calling Vivian ugly, but now it was changed again to her just calling her sappy. So ironically, Beldam is never actually being transphobic when she bullies Vivian in the remake. She's just being awful in a bunch of other ways. So for all we know, Beldam doesn't actually mind Vivian's identity. It's like they tried to erase depictions of transphobia... in a story whose moral is that transphobia is cruel... which doesn't really work. If they had changed that one line to be more clear, you'd have all the implications you need, without it being overly explicit.

6:30 unfortunately multibonk has a single frame input on the fourth hit - so I'd call that a pretty precise input especially with modern tvs and the switch itself having so much more input lag than the gamecube + crt in 2004.

Whenever I entered the Dream World, I’d equip Mario with Bros Boots as soon as I got them and spam Luiginary Ball on every enemy encounter I came across (I’m the type of player who goes for every encounter). The boots let me recover 1 BP for each enemy defeated, so once I learned that little exploit it was pretty trivial to keep Mario’s BP topped at no expense of Syrups and the regular battles done in a relatively quick fashion in the Dream World

Lack of replay? Becoming so good at the moves and knowing enemy attacks, at least for me, heightens the replay. I’m not bumbling in the dark, mastery of mechanics like these just feel good. It’s one of my most replayed games ever. Also as a side note, the advance moves do alert you mid battle to their existence. You’ve got to pay close attention to the bros.

I personally don’t like accents being included in games that require you to read text. That always required me to give something another read through to understand what the character said. So the remake omitting accents is a boon for me personally.

TTYD is my favorite game of all time, and I greatly prefer the remake, the graphics are a perfect blend of TTYD charm and modern Paper esque graphics, there's only 2 remixes I don't like: Glitzville and Rawk Hawk, I hardly have anything to complain about this remake, the atmosphere feels the same to me, and the atmosphere has been greatly enhanced in some areas imo, for example in the remake, Boggly Woods, Twilight Town, Pirate's Grotto, Sunset Station, Fahr Outpost, The Moon, X Naut Fortress and my favorite mario location, the Palace of Shadow all have enhanced atmosphere! The characters has so much more charm to them, and I never minded the some of the slowness. This remake is perfect to me. 10/10

I think this is now the best version of TTYD. I wish they had made some more improvements over the original (badges, more enemies/bosses, make the blade trouble center quests more interesting) but what we got was pretty great anyway. Now I just hope they go vack and do the same thing for Paper Mario 64.

The Switch version was the first time I played this game and maaaaan it is really that good. I loved the story and the characters, the visuals, the music, the final Boss is menacing wich was a surprise for me and of course the battle system is soo deep and interesting. There is no wrong playstyle you can make it harder or easier if you want. The TTYD remake is sooo good I think it will be my Game of the Year. Everyone should play it one way or the other, The Remake or the original GameCube version (on console or on PC using Dolphin).
