Oh MAN this poem is good. If you're wondering how to create a rhyme scheme in a poem or how to tell a story in a poem, this is a PERFECT example: The Cremation of Sam McGee by Robert Service.
In honor of ~ spooky ~ season ~ learn how to analyze poetry with one of the great spooky poems of the 20th century ^.^ The Cremation of Sam McGee is one of the most perfect Halloween poems, right up there alongside Poe's Annabelle Lee. Dare I say it's one of the best-written poems of all time?? Idk!

The Midnight Sun is something different. In the far north in midsummer , there’s a period of time where the sun never completely sets, so the sun is still visible at midnight. It’s called a midnight sun. I have been loving your videos Megan!

I just looked it up, it happens in the Antarctic circle as well as the arctic.

OMG. That's wild - thank you for teaching me that ^.^ Dang, I thought it was such a fun way to describe the moon T.T haha but that's so cool! And thank you! Glad you're enjoying them

I do think it still might be meaningful. There are stories of how when there’s no night people start having trouble sleeping, start to get a little delirious. I think it’s setting the stage a little. Like, who knows what really happened, who knows how good the narrator’s grip on reality is at the moment. Thanks for introducing me to this poem, I really enjoyed it!

I looked into this too b/c I thought it was super interesting! Apparently, these are only a summer occurrence. Since this poem takes place around Christmas, perhaps my moon theory can live on after all 😭😆 lol@ptrookie

Oh that’s a good point! That’s weird. Makes me wonder. I like your moon theory too, it’s a beautiful way to refer to the moon. Very interesting!

It's one of my favourite poem/narratives as well. I don't know many poems that have such structure, but I know the long poem Hunting of the Snark by Lewis Carroll is similar in rhythm and rhyme as well as lots of fun since it's by the author of the Alice books.

One of my favorites... Service had many great ones including "The Ballad of How MacPherson Held the Floor" and "The Ballad of the Ice-worm Cocktail". One note: I always assumed the "Midnight Sun" reference was not the moon, but instead the fact that as you approach the arctic there are certain times of the year where the sun literally does not set completely due to the earth's tilt.

Also, though Cash revised it to "toil", the original reads, ".... by the men who moil for gold". This is the only place I have ever seen the word "moil" used.

Ah I didn't know Johnny Cash made that change. I'm more familiar with 'moil' but figured it was a common swap! Cool to know :)

And yes, someone else taught me about that phrase! I still like thinking of it as the moon though ^.^ apparently the midnight sun only happens during the summer, so it could still be plausible.... ;)
