It was originally owned by, I believe, a German family by the name Dahle . Later Americanized to dolly. The sods means high open plain. It might have been used for logging at some pojnt but it was def used for military practice in world war 2? And the Dahle family used it as grazing fields for their sheep
@Pietop2 күн бұрын
I love hearing the origin of neat & interesting names for places - because no doubt "dolly sods" is a neat name. And I can definitely confirm it was a WWII military practice range, they're was a sign at the trailhead saying to stay on the trail due to live rounds still being present in the area. Talk about making every trip to the privy stressful...

@@Pietop if I tell the entire story, lol....anyway to keep it brief...between deciding to hit the alleged "easiest 14'er" in the pm after hiking Decalibron in the am, and my off route bush-wacking, and crazy weather drama, and my normally bulletproof knee rapidly and unexpectedly deteriorating to 40% functionality...it turned into a 6.5 hour suffer-fest and became my "hardest 14'er yet"...by far....took me longer than the entire Decalibron, and shook me far more than any part of Kelso Ridge or Tour De Abyss / Sawtooth Ridge

@@proverbalizer glad you made it out! Yeah the "easiest" of anything can turn into a nightmare really quick. I met a guy that got lost on Evans after accidentally summiting the wrong peak (did some 13er near by) and then realized his mistake, tried to correct, and then got pushed into a basin by an approaching storm and had a terrible evening trying to get out. No easy 14ers out there.

Any blister or hot spot you get on your feet. I rubbed my feet almost raw after 250 miles and this stuff saved me. It'll stay on for a week, so way better than a band-aid that just comes off after a 1/4 mile. This stuff is a hikers best friend.

@@Sam89365 I am not the biggest fan of what honey or maple syrup do to my mouth bacteria if I'm out there for 20-30 hours, but I have seen lots of milers using honey and syrup - I prefer south African biltong - it's softer than beef jerky easier to chew and you can wrap it in a t-shirt material and it can be exposed to heat because it's essentially cured and dried.
