Y’all remember in Monkey Island 1, on Monkey Island Guybrush just walks near a cliff and the Earth breaks apart making him fall down? The typical Sierra text box comes up and says “uh oh, hope you saved your game!” Then he bounces back up and says “Rubber tree”. lol I love that troll. Also when he’s in the forest and goes into a little hole and says “wow there’s a huge cave!” Then a message comes on saying “insert disk 10, insert disk 43, etc…” and then he goes “Oh well guess we’ll have to skip that part of the game. I know this is a Sierra video but it was awesome Lucasarts made fun of them in Monkey Island 1.

LucasArts games made dying extremely difficult and unlikely. In Zak McKraken, the only way you could kill yourself was by suffocation or a handful of easily avoidable situations that were mostly to punish players for being dicks.

LOL. 😂 Actually, now that you mention it, water WAS usually bad news bearkinors for the player. Granted, in "Hero's Quest" (a.k.a. Quest For Glory), there were some screens where water WAS groovy (and necessary).

Surprisingly not in Goblins Quest 3 though, as that game is surprisingly player friendly given how many mistakes you can make with the only real consequence being Blount humorously getting hurt in some form or fashion before he scolds the player for doing whatever led to him getting injured. 😂

The Sierra story is pretty sad. Sierra could have become the biggest player in the computer games market, but they made three big mistakes: 1) Going public to become a stock corporation. There is no need for that. Look at Valve. It does just fine without going public. When you go public, you lose control of your company because now you have to satisfy the demands of your shareholders, who only care about one thing: more profit. 2) Believe the lie that even if you sell your company, you can stay CEO and keep control of the company. Ken Williams fell for this scam. He was told that even if he sold his shares, he would still remain CEO and control everything, which of course wasn't the case, because while he remained CEO, the new owners were basically telling him how to run the company in their best interest. And while his wife was officially still working on Kings Quest 8, she was more or less sent home by the team that completely ruined the game because the new company owners demanded it. 3) Sierra was the game publisher for Half Life and they owned all the IPs for that series. If they had worked more closely with Valve, maybe even bought them, they could be where Valve is today and maybe Sierra would be running Steam today. But they failed to see the potential of HL and the potential of the Source engine. Not even the new owners of Sierra saw it, and in the end Valve would get back all the IP rights to Half-Life so they could release Half-Life 2 all by themselves, which sold 6.5 million copies (not counting Steam sales!) and funded everything else Valve has done since.

@@xcoder1122 ....there was a Kings Quest 8???
@xcoder1122Күн бұрын
@@mark6302 Yup, "King's Quest VIII: Mask of Eternity". It was supposed to be an adventure just with 3D graphics. But the new owners of Sierra wanted it to be an "action-adventure", so instead of just having puzzle elements, it featured also fighting elements and platforming; a bit like a cross over between Kings Quest and Tomb Raider - and people hated that! The game was too bad as an action game to compete with other 3D action games of that time and people who liked adventures hated those new action elements. Roberta Williams once told her husband, that the developers are destroying her game and she was right but because she kept complaining about it, the company sent her home and finished the game without her and the result was as horrible as she expected it to be. This title killed the Kings Quest series once and for all.

@ Kings Quest 7 wasn't such a bad game. Not everyone was happy with the new animation style but I guess that's personal taste (I also never understood why anyone likes those Nickelodeon cartoons, butt ugly if you ask me, and still they were popular). The new interface and being able to manipulate inventory items inside your inventory were controversial, too, but not new inventions (other adventures of that time already had a similar interfaces and also allowed that kind of manipulation). In the end, Kings Quest 7 was still a classical adventure and fit the series. Pre-rendered videos also got criticized but I never saw a problem with those (and those were everywhere at that time) and the singing - it's not like the game was turned into a musical and the singing actually was well done.
