Yes 5hr surgery! On crutches now, quads and hamstrings are my strongest muscles so do stairs and walked 20 on very slow mode treadmill (crutches). Need to build strength on Abductors and Adductors. Only taking only took paracetamol today 5 days on 10ml morphine 😅 needed to clear my head. One step time, I did email you about 2 weeks ago 😅

As always great video mate,, I'm a 36 year old male with bilateral moderately severe oa. I had cam impingements and all other things but had key hole surgery. Each day is tough for me, getting off the floor, getting dressed, shoes and socks etc the list goes on. However getting a hip replacement scares me and I turly feel I can go on longer. My surgeon is willing to give me one but has also asked it to be at the point I feel like I can't go on. I still gym 5 times a week, legs is tricky but I half rep on squats etc. I walk and hike to.

I am in the „grey zone“, 45 yr old physiotherapist, tried a lot by myself, but nothing really made me feel better. Not moving is definitely no option and causes just more and other problems. But still - although I am treating lots of patients with OA as well as THR - it is so very difficult to decide when is the right moment for surgery…..

Great video and I needed it. I am 69, female competitive sailor of a single handed boat (sunfish) and I have U.S. Championships and International Masters March 12-22. I had my surgery Nov. 6 (so I could be on opiates if Trump won lol. Ugh.) To my surprise I had a really tough time pain-wise weeks 3-5 . Now I am doing great except for this persistent sharp pain at times that is the front mid thigh. I left for home same day of surgery. My hospital gave me 6 weeks of exercises online to do each week in succession and I have gotten more PT ideas on KZbin and am frankly trying to design my own program. Looking for the sweet spot where I don't overdo but get stronger as fast as possible. My surgeon wants me to "be the tortoise, not the hare" and I have listened. Anyway, I am a little worried now that I won't be able to compete in my championships because they are 4 months post surgery not 6 months post surgery although I was pretty strong and fit going in to the replacement. Still...I am not young. Would love your opinion. You are AWESOME. Thank you!

@rebeccajones8628 -- I may have seen that video, or a similar one. No way I could have walked without a walker two days after the surgery. I had the posterior approach as well. That video as to be false. That's way too soon to be walking with nothing.

heya. it depends who and what you have had done. Many who have had THR with minimally invasive approach can now walk normally on day 1 but it depends on the context and the surgery approach, doesn't mean if you cannot that you have not been successfull, far from it. Everyone responds differently :)

I had my left hip replaced on Monday and the surgeon said it was in "a very bad state" I'm trying to do the exercises I was given and do as much walking around the house that I am able. My op leg has now started to swell and I have elevated it on two pillows at night. I have to sleep in the afternoon as the pain medications make me very tired. I am 70 so I don't think I will be running around next week but getting back to being able to go for a good walk, with the dog, will be great. Thanks for your advice. Regards, Doug

I'm currently trying 3 weeks post surgery for fai and full thickness labral tear. I'd first went to physio when I was 18 [I'm 25 now] and over the years, particularly the last year or so I have been very frustrated with the restrictions in weight training and sports. Surgeon said due to the amount of years I'd seen no improvement surgery was the correct course of action. What I have struggled with daily the last couple of years is pain in my lower back (S1) and my physio had told me this is all linked with the hip problem. I'm hoping this can get sorted as I can see this being a bigger issue than the hip. Do you have any advice with the issue around the back pain which is associated with my hip? I know I have changed the way I walk and my posture to relieve pressure from the "bad" hip over time too.
@the.hip.physio
@the.hip.physio 4 күн бұрын
Hey hey, sorry hard to give too much specific advice on here. All i can say though is the presence of some back issues is fairly common, unsure why due to causation or correllation but there is some link, like you say sometimes worse than the hip. I would defo get decent physio input to help as much as you can and don't be adverse to pain releif to help in the short term too

Going through a very similar story now. As you said in the end of the video. People who are super analytical and hyper aware, can actually slow down their recovery. I’m just shy of a year after FAI surgery. Over the past 2 weeks I made some pretty positive strides. But up until this point, it’s been a rough ride I’ll say the least. My surgeon is great. But unfortunately, the recovery plan is non existent. So I was left to fend for myself and my physio to kinda piece the puzzle together

@joanncook6926 -- I needed a couple of weeks in rehab because I live alone in a second-floor apartment with 14 steps. My daughter brought me back to my apartment (after going IN my apartment to get my walker) after a follow-up with the surgeon (I stayed outside) while my daughter went in to feed my cat. I was using one of those wooden stair things in physical therapy at rehab, so I tried a few of the steps up to my apartment. With the improvement with my new hip, I was SURE I could handle the rest of the steps, but didn't go up all the way. Had to spend another week in rehab because Hurricane Milton was headed out way (Florida) and no patients could be discharged from rehab until after the storm passed. Three weeks in rehab with PT was plenty of time for me to be able to get up those stairs and around my apartment. It's small, so not a whole lot of distance between rooms.

For first time in years my leg could straighten and my arthritic pain in that hip gone. I weaned off all pain meds including paracetamol by week 3 and down to using just one crutch. What I find very puzzling is the complete lack of rehab support offered by NHS in my area. I saw a physio for 10 mins each day during my 4 days in hospital (normally it would be a 2 day stay but I live alone so kept in a bit longer). The physio just checked I was doing the exercises contained in an information leaflet provided to me. That was it. No follow up after discharge, no information about other exercises to do etc. All I have is a 6 wk follow up visit with the consultant. I totally agree with you that there is a complete disconnect between providing the operation and assisting patients get the best outcomes through post op rehab support and assistance. Many videos I have seen are where people have had operations privately and/or provided through insurance etc where post op rehab support is provided. Due to the very poor state of my muscles due to lack of walking pre op I realise I will be using a walking aid and having to build my muscles and strength back up for some time before I am able to load bear fully on my operated hip. Your video has reinforced this and 6 months may be more realistic for me as a goal. Only then will I be able to contemplate having my other hip replacement operation. I look forward to viewing your other videos to enhance the limited number of exercises from the leaflet I have to follow each day. I am now up to 3 x 10 reps a day of these and walking with the crutch on a flat pavement outside my house about 100 metres twice a day. I remain positive I will eventually be able to walk unaided however long it takes. All the best to everyone on our collective journey!

Yes, a hip replacement can help with leg length discrepancies, as the surgeon can adjust the components to improve alignment. It's great to see you're interested in the details!

Very similar story for me, though I’m female, started at 22 with a right side groin strain, years of ‘therapy’ … top surgeon in 2020 at 45, though he did forget to mention the ‘dysplasia’ (FAI 80.9 alpha angle cam, bone shave, labrum anchors, angry 3’oclock tear at psoas notch) .. top osteopath for a year, 4 steroids over 2 years for psoas tendinopathy, rehab for ‘weak’ psoas… 3 years strict rehab, didn’t really get any better, At the age of 50 (this year) after almost 30 years I’d had enough so I had my right side total hip replacement, psoas was stuck behind the bone & short, not weak & I had ishiofemoral impingement, hamstring issue, instability … last week I had my left total hip replacement, no arthritis or issue with the femoral head but again long term FAI on the left, femoral neck was really ‘thick’, calcified labrum this side, calcified bursa, chronic tendinopathy on the greater trochanter Funnily enough I was looking at your rehab for hip replacement programs & wondered if it would be something I would get good results from as a previous FAI dysplasia & bilateral hip replacements for non arthritic reasons

Love to hear you can get surgery, do everything essentially wrong and then eventually get better. A lot of research or forums on the internet are filled with horror stories. You have a great attitude. Gives me hope and also encourages me to give pt a nice long runway before considering surgery.

Do you think you’re gonna have to have a THR in the future? Or can the labral repair last a lifetime?

Maybe, who knows? It is a bit stiffer now over ten years since but it feels fine, but you never know!
