I did, thank you. One question, I feel like I can walk without a cane, but with a limp. Is it helpful to walk without the cane to strenghten the leg? Or use thecsane for 6 week. I'm 24 days out from a posterior hip replacement

I was glad my surgeon and physical therapists advised me of the hip precautions. I WAS ready to quit having to sleep on my back. I asked if it was ok at my six-week appointment, and my surgeon said it was. Made a big difference in my sleep quality. Hard to sleep on the back the whole night when you're a side sleeper.

Thank you very much . Your advice is very useful . I had THR 5 days ago , I am an anaesthetist and was working up to the day of my operation , limping and couldn’t exercise before due to pain . It is frustrating now but I am prepared for a long journey . Take care . Monika

I'm 5 weeks post op and feeling pretty good. I have not had f2f rehab, just printed exercises from the hospital which I have been doing. Had stopped using crutches or a stick but saw my local physio today who said use my walking stick for at least a couple more weeks, which I will do. Have watched a couple of your videos and find them really informative and helpful. The big message for me is to take my time to recover. Thank you

Many thanks for posting this. I have waited several years for both hips to be replaced by which time I was using walking sticks and virtually housebound. I had my first NHS operation (anterior) 5 weeks ago and had a spinal anaesthetic so awake during the operation. Operation went very well. For first time in years my leg could straighten and my arthritic pain in that hip gone. I weaned off all pain meds including paracetamol by week 3 and down to using just one crutch. What I find very puzzling is the complete lack of rehab support offered by NHS in my area. I saw a physio for 10 mins each day during my 4 days in hospital (normally it would be a 2 day stay but I live alone so kept in a bit longer). The physio just checked I was doing the exercises contained in an information leaflet provided to me. That was it. No follow up after discharge, no information about other exercises to do etc. All I have is a 6 wk follow up visit with the consultant. I totally agree with you that there is a complete disconnect between providing the operation and assisting patients get the best outcomes through post op rehab support and assistance. Many videos I have seen are where people have had operations privately and/or provided through insurance etc where post op rehab support is provided. Due to the very poor state of my muscles due to lack of walking pre op I realise I will be using a walking aid and having to build my muscles and strength back up for some time before I am able to load bear fully on my operated hip. Your video has reinforced this and 6 months may be more realistic for me as a goal. Only then will I be able to contemplate having my other hip replacement operation. I look forward to viewing your other videos to enhance the limited number of exercises from the leaflet I have to follow each day. I am now up to 3 x 10 reps a day of these and walking with the crutch on a flat pavement outside my house about 100 metres twice a day. I remain positive I will eventually be able to walk unaided however long it takes. All the best to everyone on our collective journey!

Hi, Just found this video. I had my left hip replaced on Monday and the surgeon said it was in "a very bad state" I'm trying to do the exercises I was given and do as much walking around the house that I am able. My op leg has now started to swell and I have elevated it on two pillows at night. I have to sleep in the afternoon as the pain medications make me very tired. I am 70 so I don't think I will be running around next week but getting back to being able to go for a good walk, with the dog, will be great. Thanks for your advice. Regards, Doug

The first straight talk common sense vid I have seen! Thank you so much. I am a fit and active person hoping for increased stength and range of motion. Body is well adapted to moving with modified gait, too much external rotation, mild to moderate pain. Physio (here in the US it is PT) has been helping with maintaining ROM and strength-building for a year. Surgery scheduled for Feb, hoping to hike the mountains in early July...Thanks for the encouragement and straight talk.

Yes, spent 3months before surgery and expected that within 2 weeks after I would be dancing on the tables 😂😂😂. No forget all those videos of patients walking without sticks in 2 days, everyone is different and fully agree with keeping mobile but go slower on the strength and loading, mobility is the first second and third priority. 4 weeks now and just getting the benefits, I’m a fit 70 yr old very sporty male, all progress is good progress.

Had right anterior THR 3+ weeks ago. At two weeks felt great but that was probably a mistake as I pushed things a bit hard and now it's been slow going with soreness and pain. Using single crutch or cane all the time. Had left hip done 17 months prior and recall pushing myself to early and to soon as I'm an active biker and hiker in mid-60s. Patience is the key here.

I can’t believe how quickly my recovery has been but I am quite regimentals with doing all the prescribed exercises by my physio and I will continue to see them for as long as I need to be to ensure I stay on the right recovery path and do the best I possibly can to enjoy and care for my fabulous new hip .

Also, due to an overbooked surgery schedule, they literally pushed me out the door. On the threshold of my home, my knees turned to jelly and I fell on my knees and I think general anesthesia was not the plan but the anesthesiologist was actually an OB anesthesia giver.

I had complete hip replacement on November 30,2023. Rehab was minimal. I went back to work 3 months post-op. A year later, it is still a struggle to walk without a limp and pain in the quads. I am doing all the research. I am trying to get back to normal on my own. After seeing this video, I'm thinking I came off of the walking devices and returned to work too soon. I am 54 y.o. My gait has most definitely changed and I don't know how to correct it.

I am younger and was in good shape prior to my surgery (only 4 days ago). While the stiffness and swelling are a hindrance, I am already in less pain than I was over the last 3 months or so. My concern is that so far my physio is treating me as the norm. Since the therapy will end up costing me more than the surgery did - I'm concerned that the therapy is worth the money. I have committed to them that I will do 2 weeks in person, but for me to continue, they need to up their game. When I had my shoulder done, my experience was just the opposite - my physio was excited to design a program for someone outside of the norm... I would go back to her in a heartbeat, but she no longer practices in my area. I just bring this up to your point about getting the therapy - if I were to do this again, I would I terview multiple physios in my area to see who was really going to work with me because they have a passIon for healing, versus who is doing the work to collect a check.

3 weeks today. Anterior method. 78 years old. Brutal for about10 days. I threw the stick down about a week ago and I actually walked unaided for 1/2 mile or so day 18. Maybe a big mistake as I was in major pain that night and the next day. I’ve been resting for two days now inside with the stick. Walking is good? Or if it’s painful is it counter productive.

I want to be able to ride my motorcycle too. Cause I can't swing my leg over the bike. Not quite yet. Really appreciate you putting all this content out. Sometimes I don't even feel like. Hi, just had right total hip replacement done 6 days ago, the pain is not as bad as i thought but the joint is very stiff. I can manage my bed and upright physio exercises but only managed 70 steps on my crutches today! Problem is my left hip is really worn out and needs replaced as soon as ive recovered from this one and ive lost an inch and a half in height due to bone on bone wear. I feel out of kilter when walking as they have restored my height on the new joint! Am i doing ok for the time scale? Im not so sure. And advice would be welcome!👍♥️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

My operated leg is 2 cm longer, the other one is also worn (dysplasia). I had elevated slippers made, so walking is much easier. I was also exhausted, I feel that the rehabilitation is slow, but I am getting better after 5 weeks. It takes patience and the ideal ratio of movement and rest, which is indicated to me by the feeling and pain that appears.

@joanncook6926 -- I needed a couple of weeks in rehab because I live alone in a second-floor apartment with 14 steps. My daughter brought me back to my apartment (after going IN my apartment to get my walker) after a follow-up with the surgeon (I stayed outside) while my daughter went in to feed my cat. I was using one of those wooden stair things in physical therapy at rehab, so I tried a few of the steps up to my apartment. With the improvement with my new hip, I was SURE I could handle the rest of the steps, but didn't go up all the way. Had to spend another week in rehab because Hurricane Milton was headed out way (Florida) and no patients could be discharged from rehab until after the storm passed. Three weeks in rehab with PT was plenty of time for me to be able to get up those stairs and around my apartment. It's small, so not a whole lot of distance between rooms.

I'm now 4 weeks post op from a right THR (posterior approach), I'm 47yo and fit and healthy, I was trail running up until three weeks pre op, albeit in pain! I am off my crutches and am walking for 45-60 mins twice a day. I feel that I am walking better with a slight limp and don't have any pain in the hip. I am, however, experiencing an achy type pain down my right thigh (femural?). Is this normal or a sign that I may be overdoing the walking? I am also doing rehab exercises three times a day and have been told to adhere to precautions. Other than being super tired I feel that recovery is going well and am seeing little bits of progress every day.
