Interesting ? Never used JJ tubes , I have a selection of vintage tubes that I swap but for new tubes EH is workable . In my Mc240 I can hear whatever changes tubes make. Telefunken is always nice.

Just recently got more serious about rolling quality, vintage preamp tubes in and out of my guitar amp and just want to say that I have been enjoying the content of your videos. Good stuff! 👍 So far, I'm really liking the Tungsram ECC83, after using a late 50's Baldwin-branded Raytheon Black Plate for the past few months. Both are VERY nice compared to the contemporary tube makes. Next up will be a GE-branded Mullard I63 Blackburn, like the tube you've shown here in this video.

No. Different pinout and only running on 6.3v ..so if you want to use them you first need to verify if you amp heater indeed runs on 6.3. . And you either need to get this adapters that im using or re-wire your tube sockets. When it comes to tube yes.. its pretty much ECC83 with exception that this one has 98% gain when ECC83 has 100%. The gain difference is so small you woudnt even notice :)

To understand the prices for radio tubes in Ukraine, you can buy 6n2p - 1 $ 6n2p -ev - 5$ ecc83 - 18-25$ Price-quality is in the lead 6n2p-ev.
@soapboxearth22 ай бұрын
6n2p are great tubes. I have lots of them and I have lots of valuable mullards etc. There are differences but not ones that reflect the price differences.. I build my guitar amps with a switchable circuit so that they can accommodate either. You'll want to ground pin 9 on the 6n2p. It's a sheild that runs between the triodes. And your heaters are pins 5 and 4. Otherwise they're wired like a ecc83
@Azimut_852 ай бұрын
6n2p lamps have many disadvantages. This is a dispersion of characteristics, this is internal noise, this is self-excitation. I have a large number of them, I like to experiment. Want better quality? 6n2p-ev, 6n2p-v, 6n2p-i. Any of these lamps will be 50% better in all respects.

@ecc83442 ай бұрын
Hi there. Yes, better materials were used back then. Just like anything back then was made to last a long time. :) why cant they do that today? Good question, with modern technology they could make superior tubes but I guess thats how things go in this world. Everything has to be consumed quickly so therefore you need to buy again and again :)

Really cool video. I liked the JJs more on the guitar-only tracks, but the New Sensor sounded much clearer in a mix to my ears. I'm currently deciding whether to splurge on some new preamp tubes for a Hiwatt and Marshall which have JJs and EH tubes, so this was really helpful. I know you mentioned your take in another video on the different New Sensor tubes, but I've been having a difficult time finding a direct comparison between the Sovtek LPS, the Mullard RI, and the Gold Lion gold pin (i.e., the 3 long-plate ECC83s from New Sensor). Could be a cool comparison!

Hi there. Why do they sound better? Better materials were used back then. And everything was made to last long. Back then people had their tv's and radios for a very long time unlike today when everything is made to be used quick and made with poor quality. Vintage tubes (at least preamp) last for a very long time, some people argue for a lifetime. So definitely superior choiche if you choose vintage :)

I wonder if one could re-think the differences of tube tone, like if the JJs seem to have higher gain than the russian tubes in the lower registers - why not re-voice the circuit by changing the bias resistors and cathode bypass capacitors? Look at Marshall plexi circuits, you have the same v1 tube providing the first gain stage in both high treble and the normal channel - v1a vs v1b. But both are biased differently and have different cathode bypass capacitors - both channels have very different eq. Why not take an amplifier and re-voice it to give the same results with JJ tubes? Just start playing around with cathode bypass caps and coupling capacitors to neutralize the bass frequencies of JJs?
@ecc83443 ай бұрын
Because why would you recap the amp to adjust to JJ? :)
@danieltambasco5283 ай бұрын
@@ecc8344 it could make sense, right? JJ's are the most abundant available modern made tubes. Capacitors and resistors are cheap - just re-voice an amplifier to give original tones using modern made tubes. Maybe it would fail to do so? I am told not every facet of tone/sound is visible on an oscilloscope - although, nobody is ever capable of informing me what is it about the electrical signal that is invisible to oscilloscope waveform analysis?

I just bought a tube tester and put it to work. I tested three JJ tubes that had little use and all were bad, even a new EL34 that was a part of a matched quad - did not even register on the meter. A 6V6S from JJ that I bought for a guitar amp I built -bad. And an ECC81. I tested 2 Tung-Sol 12AX7 and they were brand new - both bad. I have a bunch of vintage tubes I tested from GE, RCA, Sylvania, Raytheon, Amperex and out of 50 tubes, 4 were bad. They just do not make tubes like they used to and one has to be careful.

I am fortunate I began collecting USA-made NOS tubes 30 years ago and I have some old RCA tubes that are still operating in my 1960s vintage tube amplifiers. I tried some newly manufactured tubes and they are OKAY if they come from highly tested tubes for noise etc. Most Chinese tubes have a short life and have very little sound character.
