Question. Anything special when framing a 2x4 along the siding part of house? Can you just drill right into siding? Do you look for studs under siding? Looking for some advice on this.
@LetsDoThisDIY
@LetsDoThisDIY 11 күн бұрын
Hey!! No need to find anything special when putting the 2x4s into the siding since the walls are technically not structural. The siding also has a OSB boards behind it so it won’t just be attached to the siding. It will end up attaching to a the boards behind it. You are just looking to add enough anchor points so that it’s a stable wall. You will still have 3 other anchor Points with the floor, ceiling and other all. I would just be mindful of where you potentially might have power or water lines. I used 3 inch screws to help make sure I didn’t go too far into the wall and puncture anything.

How many bags of gravel and sand did you use?
@LetsDoThisDIY
@LetsDoThisDIY 16 күн бұрын
I didn’t actually used bags. I went to a local landscaping place that sells dirt and stuff and got a 2 scoops of gravel and I also did 2 scoops of sand and dropped into my friend’s pick up truck. It was more than I needed but I needed to put some gravel in other places. I tried the bags before around the pool and the bags didn’t really have a lot of coverage

Looks great. I’ve been thinking about doing the same thing. Did you find that the width was sufficient to keep the hot grill top away from the fence when you opened it? I accidentally warped the siding of my starter house by putting my first smoker too close to it. The lid swung back further than I realized, and the heat of the metal warped the siding, even though it wasn’t touching.
@LetsDoThisDIY
@LetsDoThisDIY 24 күн бұрын
Thanks! Yea that was little but of a concern but it hasn’t been an issue lol. There is more than enough room for the lid to open up. It worked out so well I recently built another section right next to it for a griddle. I do inspect the fence a lot to make sure lol

It was definitely a pain to put down and a lot more expensive than I thought it would be based on the estimated coverage. I needed double than what they recommended. But now that it’s down it’s holding up really well. I was able to easily hose off pollen build up from the spring, it’s not really slippery when wet, and it stays fairly cool. It filled in some cracks also so I can’t complain. This fall I’m going to the rest of my patio all the way to the pool.

Watched all your videos & going to have a Handyman company do this for me to re-screen my screen porch (10 x30). I want the lower area covered with siding - glad I found your example. I had that screen tight & another guy did a horrible job. This will be 3rd re-screening. They are going to staple. But, hopefully next year going to replace w/windows or ezbeeeze vinyl ones, if possible. I think you did a fabulous job !! Enjoy !!

Thank you so much! My mother in law ended up going with the staple route because in a couple of years she said she’s going to replace them with windows. Having the lower area covered with siding really made it more durable. It has protected it from my lawn mower, dogs, and just the kids playing around lol. It definitely added a little more headache to the build to figure out but I do think it was worth the extra step.

I’m getting outrageous bids to convert my screen porch to a 3 season room. At 67, 4’11” Single woman, going to try & figure this out myself. Average quote has been $18k for a 10’ x 30’ porch….house only 8 years old. So, in great shape. These contractors are insane !! Only 2 walls bc was an open porch I had screened in when I brought house in December of 2015. Unfortunately, cannot depend on Relatives nearby. I moved here from Atlanta….big mistake. @@LetsDoThisDIY I lived in Suwanee & added a beautiful 20 x 20 room, vaulted, cedar walls, gable roof, 2 trex decks skylights & 2 ceiling fans, etc., in 2009. I think I paid in total about $15k. Brought that house in ‘97, $225k. It’s now valued close to 700k. Makes me sick to my stomach. First, it would be paid off & I desperately miss Atlanta. I lived there for 35 years. Big mistake to return here for retirement. But, have to take these lemons & make the best of it. I brought a RV & come down almost every year to hang out with Friends & relax by a lake. why no housewrap for the plywood?
@LetsDoThisDIY
@LetsDoThisDIY 2 ай бұрын
I considered wrapping it but after talking to a few people I decided not to since I was not fully enclosing and insulating the entire area and making it completely waterproof/weatherproof. They told me that there will be too many other entry points for water and moisture to enter and there’s a good chance then house wrap would make it harder to water to dry out that leaks behind it.

I started a few smaller projects and just forgot to record lol. I’m trying to do better this year though lol. One major factor that played a part in my choice to do it this way was that I didn’t have deal with insulation and HVac. I considered buying a mini split system so I didn’t have to tie into the inside system but then things started to get too complicated and pricey lol.
