I've just stumbled upon your review. Fantastic. Probably the most mature opinion of Ballard I have come across on You Tube. Thank you.

@@PrisonforKids Your description of Ballard reminds me a little of Aickman, another British writer who is impossible to categorize. My favorite collection of his short stories is called “The Wine Dark Sea.”

Great review..I've never really gotten into the 'sci fi' stuff ..I always thought he was a socialogical writer first and foremost. Gotta say even though my mind is quite disgusted with what I read ..I'm drawn back again and again

Big Disch fan here. I discovered him in my youth first with Fun With Your New Head. I was hooked! Loved all your comments...wanted to make a few recommends: His stories collections are all worth pickin g up but especially find GETTING INTO DEATH, and White Fang Goes Dingo. Then his "horror" quadrology is acerbic and rollicking. "The M.D a Horror Story" is the one Id recommend.

Shellac, Birthday Party and Jesus Lizard bass tones are pretty much Traynor TS 25/50’s, Fender Bassmans and Travis Bean aluminum neck instruments. Edit: found out the oscilloscope diagram is glow in the dark.

My favorite sci-fi book of all time. So different. I'll never forget "Chronopolis" and other brilliant stories from it.

Thank you for some modern recognition of this masterful artist. I began to read Ballard in the 1970's and, at first, I found his writing very hard to ''get my head around''. All I knew was that I was mesmerised by his themes, which approached my favourite genre from a completely different angle than most of the other authors I'd found so far. ''Crash'' sealed it for me and, if you have yet to read it, I envy you. What I always enjoyed about any work by Ballard, whether it be short story or novel, is that I felt he was being honest. I've read about him and watched interviews with him and the last adjective I would use would be ''pretentious''. James Ballard came across as a man who believed in his writing, albeit with a (sometimes) wry sense of humour. His passing was a great loss to literature, I feel, but hopefully his worldview and any warnings he felt the need to express will stay around as long as they are discussed. His characters weren't frightened of change, they embraced it.

I got this collection upon reading a review in The Atlantic, and it blew my mind. He is master of the short story.

The single funniest title of any Ballard story is Why I Want to Fuck Ronald Reagan. I cannot recall what the actual story was about, but it's a title you're not likely to forget. My first exposure to Ballard came from the Cronenberg adaptation of Crash. I bought the book immediately after seeing the film and read half of it while sitting in the food court of the local mall. Concrete Island is among the few novels I read in a single sitting .

Great video mate! Definitely not a well-worn topic. Always admired Thirwell's creativity, acerbic humor, genuine pathos, and after seeing him perform a couple times, his showmanship. Have most of his voluminous output on vinyl, but when did Hise come out, doesnt ring a bell

The first vinyl record I EVER bought, a water damaged single lp, missing all the inserts, for one dollar in 2002. I was 16. I still have that same copy for sentimental reasons, and it still sounds good with all its pops and hisses. I did also purchase the 3-lp version also because I like the live version of Tommy. Heaven and hell also SLAYS.

I think dummy generally has catchier songs, and self-titled is so much darker and more sinister. (With the exception of Biscuit, one of the darkest songs I've heard in YEARS.) I love them both equally

Sclucky enough to see Wire live at CBGB in 1977 right after Pink Flag. Pink Flag has a sophisticated sound with a minilistic sound keeping the solos out and giving the listener only what is relevant to the song. Wire goes forward adding experience to put out Chairs Missing then 154. The best first 3 LP's put out by any band . Everyday's a Saturday!
