The big news this month is the arrival of drone giant DJI, and automotive behemoth ZF, into the e-bike market. DJI was the biggest surprise for most people, with not only a motor that (on paper) wipes the floor with most of the competition, but a whole new bike to mount it on. Yes, Amflow is effectively a DJI start-up brand solely created to bring this high-end motor to life. We discuss the potential of this system, ponder some of the possible weaknesses, and try to answer whether it's worth all the hype.
www.mbr.co.uk/...
ZF is a huge automotive brand supplying gearboxes, electronics and even complete electric drivetrains. And it has entered the e-bike market with an impressive looking motor, boasting lightweight, compact dimensions, and plenty of power. Will it be enough to put the frighteners on some more established motor brands? And will we see it appear on e-bikes from mainstream brands soon?
www.mbr.co.uk/...
We also speculate about what's new with Bosch's unreleased Gen 5 CX motor, spotted on numerous bikes at the recent Eurobike show.
www.mbr.co.uk/...
We also take a look at the latest Specialized Stumpjumper 15. Alan has been to the launch of this significant new bike and dug deep into the details with the product manager and suspension engineer. We find out about the new Genie shock, and why it's such a clever bit of kit, as well as discover Alan's first ride impressions. For Alan's full first ride review, packed with insight, click the link below.

Finally, we find out more about YT's latest e-bike, the Decoy SN. Danny went to the launch for this, and goes through all the details, as well as revealing his pick of the new range, and why. To read more about his first ride impressions, click the link below.

The headline should be the ZF's lifetime warranty (this is true, correct?). I'm tired of replacing expensive Brose motors every two years. DJI looks sexy, but more tech could mean more things to fail. We should talk more about reliability and service, else the vendors will continue to ignore these issues.

Agreed. This tech is in its infancy and bikes are going to get lighter, smaller and have more power in just a few years from now, and all these bikes people are buying now will be obsolete. E Bikes are fun and can serve a purpose- but I love the simplicity even more now of a good ol mechanical fully Amish bike that can be ridden anywhere, anytime through power outages and the zombie apocalypse. Part of me hates turning a bike into a god damn phone with that touch screen 🤦🏻‍♂️ the last thing I want is fiddling around with a screen on my bike.

I have two road hikes with rim brakes. My workout bike is an emtb. It weighs 24.5kg and I only use the motor in high headwind situations. There are no hills on my ride. I consider drop bars to be only for people without back pain and those who usually drive cars who have to get where they are going as fast as possible whilst appreciating as little as they can of the countryside they are travelling through. The upright riding position in a head-wind is better offset by help from an electric motor than tucking your head up your ar$e and spinning like a crazy person.

ZF Motor provides a great user experience: compact for better bike designs, noise level of electric sirr sounding like honest power up, well adjustable acceleration and support that doesn't let you hit a wall at cut-off point but provides what you wish for, weight close to a light weight system. As of now, ZF omitted a gearbox for higher volume sales at deeper price points, but that's exactly what I wish for: a superior Pinion version in the years to come. They might have opted for aged battery tech, but till then will surely up their ante as well. I'm definitely curious how efficient the motor is as of now and where it will be in two years!

What’s the point of more power when a small motor does the trick. I hardly ever use full power on the Bosch with a 24kg bike. It is not 18th century science anymore. You guys are mixing up the old, obsolete metric system with the world-wide standard SI Metric System which resolves the ambiguity between kilogram-mass and kilogram-force a long time ago. Newton-meter and Watt are SI Metric System units where the unit of force (or weight) which make up those derived units is a Newton. Say "Mass" when referencing the unit kilogram. Otherwise, by your definition of weight, torque (= weight or force x distance) would = kilogram-meter and it does not. Static weight is a derived unit and is the product of mass multiplied by the acceleration of gravity. That is why something weighs less on the Moon than on Earth but their mass is the same at both of these locations. Welcome to the 21st Century.

I wish ebike reviews would measure the discharge rate of the battery both voltage and current to give the true wattage. Here in Europe we have this farcical 250W rating which no mid-drive motor ebike adheres to. Bosch ebikes have been shown to be discharging at 23A I think continuously when climbing and a fresh 36V battery discharges at 42V initially. 42x23 is not 250W. I'd really like to know the true wattage of ebikes rather than this pretend 250W rating so when a ebike is giving its maximum torque I'd like to know how much wattage that is. I can't work out which motor is more efficient because the wattage given is typically manipulated somehow so really its up to reviewers to give factual information but many are sponsored by bike companies who want to pretend their ebikes are actually 250W. A 250W continuous motor is only 7A at 36V or 5A at 48V. Why can't Europe have honest wattage certification like the USA? It feels like all the European ebike manufacturer representative's should have 3 foot long noses. I'd like to know if one ebike motor manufacturer can produce 80Nm at 600W when another manufacturer uses 800W to get the same torque. This is an excellent point. As you say it is farcical, but motor brands won't reveal this kind of information, either because it risks their motors not meeting legislation, or because they don't want competitors to know, or potential liability issues. I have no idea. The only way we can really measure this is to stick them on a dyno, which is something we'd love to do.

Sorry but the "game changers " already occurred almost a decade ago with the TQ and Sachs motors ., The hyperbolic claims that the DJI is the fastest motor on the market is simply unproven under all conditions in fact i'll bet the Sachs could destroy the DJI on a one or two km hill climb ., the sachs can run its 112 Nm at low RPMS ( 40to 60 ) without overheating as fast as the DJI which openly admits that their turbo mode can only handle 30 seconds before overheating . The hype around the DJI is because of their rep in the drone business and they are aggressively marketing the bike by supplying reviewers with bikes they can test . this takes a lot of money and organization , something wasn't available for the Sachs ., BTY , the sachs motor was the first attempt by ZF to enter the e bike market . they were partners in its development , so really this latest venture is not their first motor . it's the first motor for them without a partner .

Some people are lazier and just want to ride downhills. Bay Area trails can be done with an SL-level bike. Even over by Alum Rock and Mission Peak. I'd have one too if I were still living there. Where I live there is so much really steep shit that I really appreciate the extra power of a full motor. And also it means the bike can double as a lazy day transport bike (turbo mode). No comment on your age. You're' still a youngster so long as you ride :-) .

Light weight vs longer range. Why not design a frame that can take two batteries? Put in one for shorter rides for a lighter bike, slap both in when you want to go on a longer ride.
@MBRmagazine
@MBRmagazine 2 ай бұрын
Good idea but it’s not quite as simple as that. Each battery needs its own connection and cabling to the motor. But there are quite a few bikes that can run different size batteries. Smaller for shorter rides or lighter weight, bigger for longer rides. And they just slot straight in thanks to extender blocks bolted to the end of the casing to keep the physical external dimensions the same.

Mountain bike brands sell out the spot for E bike sales. This is expected for non mountain bike brands to jump in for the pie. Battle of e power between brands is expected also to to scratch the itch of “more power to make you a better mountain biker.” E market easy to sell you the dream of power and updates year to year Much more tech to sell you updates on E bikes than analog year to year which is why it’s changing to a motor sport. I won’t feel sorry for MTB brands losing sales to brands like DJI. Made your bed by selling out the MTB sport for motors now you have to lay in it against non MTB brands.

DJI made good headlines but the real question is, does anyone need more torque than 85, does anyone really spend all rides in Turbo and actually think it needs more power !?, the use case of someone who rides all the time in turbo and wants more power has to be sooooo small. And that even being case is likely a burly downhill type build and the lightweight build of the DJI bike being shown is trail/XC, build a like for like and it's no lighter. Also these motors will never take off unless big brand manufactures spec them. The DJI motor unit is only 0.05kg lighter than the EP801, build a like for like bike and the only differentiator is the battery, not the motor, not to mention after sales support etc. DJI have rhe deadlines but in the real world..... 🤔🤷🏻

Well the bike I was looking at was a 1000 watt class 2 with a throttle and a mid drive. I was told due to power outputs even though the bike ships as a class 2 setting wise the 1000watt is what pushes it to a realm where it is consodered a moped due to power and would require registration as well as insurance to be on the road. If you get caught operating the bike without said insurance and registration you could be charged for operating and unlawful vehicle on a public roadway, your bike could be impounded and your license suspended. Sorry, but these are not e-bikes but e-motorcycles. Fine, buy them, enjoy them, register them, get insurance and drivers license. Don't come to bike trails, paths, anywhere reserved for BICYCLES powered on average by 100W, if so humans. Yes, there are athletes who can do prolonged 500+W but even for prolonged 200W you need a well trained person. Stop stealing the name. Speak of these as for what they are: MOTORCYCLES.
