The uk laws are a joke, and honestly, e bikes aren't the issue. It's who's using them that can be the issue. I actually think ebikes are overall safer on the road as can pull off faster and can stick to a better speed. I can understand restricting speed and it needing to be pedal assist but I think a 250watt motor is a joke. Mine is 565 watts and it's plenty which I'll stick too

Namaste 🙏, We have a few Questions for your KZbin video panel, to answer. Question One; Do you agree or not agree, all E-Bikes should have registered number plates, like Electric Motorcycles or Electric Motorscooters, or any Motor Vehicle has? Or all E-bikes should be fitted with a GPS tracking device, including the E-bike own information and Rider's / Owners personal details too. As well as records the speed of the E-Bike at all times, plus is automatically recorded too, with all this E-Bike data being automatically transmittered too. Which police officers or traffic Warden's, equipped with a handheld special E-Bike scanner receiver, can pickup E-Bik'es data etc, as it passes a Police Office in range, or an E-Bike Rider is trying to escape the Police chasing them too. Which this type of technology would be both useful and helpful, for Police Officers trying to find and recovery stolen E-Bikes too! Question Two; Do you agree or not agree, all E-Bikes should be subjected to annual Motor Vehicles Examination and Testing, then issued with a Vehicle Safety Certificate to use on Public Roads and Streets? Question Three; Do you agree or not agree, All E-Bike Riders should be required to pass a Riders Examination and Test, if the rider passes they are then issued with an E-Bike Rider's License by DVLA too? Question Four; Do you agree or not agree, there should be a Minimum Age for E-Bike Rider's, for example 17 years of age? Question Five; Do you agree or not agree, all E-Bike Rider's should have to buy E-Bike Insurance, plus must have a current insurance policy too, which the police officers, traffic Warden's or DVLA officials can check on too? Question Six; Do you agree or not agree; all E-Bike Rider's when riding their E-Bike, by law must wear a motorcycle crash helmet not a bicycle helmet, also must wear safety clothing too, for the E-Bike Rider's own safety too? Question Seven; Do you agree or not agree, All E-Bikes are fitted and installed with, Driving Lights, Brake Lights, Indicators and Horn too? Question Eight; Do you agree or not agree, all E-Bikes are not allowed on Public Pavements and Public Shared Spaces, plus not allowed in Public Parks, in other words E-Bikes are only allowed on Public Roads and Streets ONLY? Question Nine; Do you agree or not agree, all E-Bikes should have a maximum speed, for example between 15 mph upto 30 mph on Public Roads and Streets ? Question Ten, Do you agree or not agree, any E-Bike Rider's who causes a Road Traffice Incident or Accident, or causes damage to others property, or causes injuries and/or even deaths, the E-Bike Rider should be subjected to the same Road Traffic and Highways Laws, plus Prision Sentencing or Fines and held legally accountable for Compensation to victims too? Question Eleven; Do you agree or not agree, retailers and repairs of E-Bikes. Should have a Legal Duty to report to the Police or DVLA or local Council, all or any illegal E-Bikes and their Riders / Owners, they are aware of, or have come into their E-Bike Shop and Repair Centre etc? Last and Question Twelve; Do you agree, there should be specially designed and have a pre-set speed limited E-Bikes (with bicycle pedals fitted too) for children's (ages between 11 to 16 years of age) only use? As a Vulnerable Disabled Pedestrians, with Sensory and Physically Disabilities, plus I am a Service Dog 🐕‍🦺 Handler / Ownet / User too. I am open scared of going out on the Public Pavement and going through so called Shared Public Spaces, let alone trying to cross Public Roads and Streets too. From being knock down and injured or even killed by near silent Electric Cars and Electric Vans. Or hit by Electric Buses and Electric Truck, as well as not knowing there is an Electric Motorcycles and/or Electric Motorscooters speeding towards me too! Like far too many Vulnerable Disabled and Elderly Residents, as well as equal number of Disabled Young People and Children with Special Needs plus their parents too. All these days fear the growing threat and danger, from more and more near-silent Electric Vehicles on our roads! These E-Bikes and their Riders, have only made this ten times worse now. I suggest to know what it is like to be Visually Impaired and/or Blind Disabled Vulnerable Pedestrian, with the growing threats of accidents or being hit by an E-Bike Rider who runs away afterwards with no one knowing who they were too. Why don't each of you, try finding what it like to be a Vulnerable Disabled Pedestrian, by wearing Disability Simulation Devices and Systems. Which reproduces what it like to be Visually Impaired and/or Blind, or Hearing Impaired and/or Deaf, or Mobility Impaired and/or wheelchair user too, plus dependant on an Service 🐕‍🦺 Dog, or Guide 🦮 Dog, or Hearing and/or Assistance Animal, for your safety too! Then you may understand, the likes of Vulnerable Disabled Pedestrians point of view or concerns and worries or fears of high-speed E-Bikes especially on the Public footpath too! I am sure your local Guide 🦮 Dog's Centre, or local Guide 🦮 Dog's Handlers / Owners / Users, would be willing to help you understand what Vulnerable Disabled Pedestrians fear and worried about E-Bikes! Namaste 🙏, Gurkhamum Wendy (disabled and former councillor too) and Wheelchaircharlie39 David (disabled veteran) Now Disability Rights Campaigner's and Service 🐕‍🦺 Dog Handlers / Owners / users too!

The show was a scare mongering hit piece. Nearly all the problems were related to riding on the pavement. But even that was blown out of proportion. I don’t feel sorry for the police at all. They were so joyful at removing a man’s livelihood on minimum wage. With no evidence that the bike has been ridden over 15mph assisted it’s outrageous to take the property away when the bike is first discovered. Way overhanded. The police will lose this battle. Reduction in emissions/pollution and traffic is imperative. Much more important than the minuscule number of accidents. Even you guys are guilty of massive nanny state mentality. Why not allow e-bikes up to 3kw and 40mph but have a registration and mot scheme? Maybe even need a licence. Get bike shops to do yearly mot’s. If sensible limits(sorry 15mph 250w is dumb) were allowed you promote a lot more commuting. If people can commute at the speed of the cars up to 30mph they’d get there faster and safer. The funny thing about the 15mph limit is that you can ride a race/recumbent at 30mph easy. Made my laugh how the present said a bike was a death trap going 30 then rides off in a motor bike that can probably go 130mph with no more protection 😂 I don’t agree that we should be dominated by cars. Roads are fine for bikes, once bikes go 30mph they would soon get used to it and there would be less of that desperation to push past quickly.

I think with mtb becoming almost entirely e-bike at the consumer level, lots of people are going down to 10sp for durability and price. The motor does enough that a massive cog isn’t really worth it. Given that the 12sp cassette are anywhere from £120 - £500 vs £40 for a 10sp and they only last 25-30 rides …. Which is why the mgu interests a lot of folks, but they are exclusively £10k+ at the moment.

The bike brands need to realize that there are loads of riders out there who have little interest in the latest million dollar version of Red or Dura Ace. They can't afford any of it anyway. And what many people really want and need are drivetrains that have a wide range of ratios, enough options within those two extremes, a drivetrain that won't break if a little neglected, and will last a long time. Racing has been great for many innovations, but not all of them really apply to most riders. I'm probably an outlier, but I just bought a set of bar end friction shifters for my next build because of their simplicity and ease of use. I don't want electronic shifting. I want reliable, wide range, robust mechanical, even if a little inefficient.

As with others, I'd say you are more a "typical" (enthusiast) cyclist, than someone who lives and breathes cycling and likely has a single/main interest in life: their bike(s) and riding. A good example of that would be Simon Horsley, (lovely fella) who was adamant (a month ago) £10k wouldn't buy his Time Trial bike which he loves to ride and helps keep him competitive. If we consider bike buyers/users as a pyramid, with low bike prices at the bottom, and £10k plus bikes at the apex, how flat and how pointed would that pyramid be? Trek could probably tell us BTW..... I suspect the lower end would be huge, Children/Youth bikes sales, (assuming e-scooters haven't decimated interest), and returning (older) cyclists, probably the bread and butter purchases under of around £400. Keen riders with a little cash, or maybe middle class riders buying into a brand, maybe upto £1,000/£1,200. I would think anyone spending more than £1,200 ought to be using their bike, not having it parked in a garage. Above £6k, people who race in amateur events for fun, or have disposable income and like the idea of an e-bike. Much above £6k, I would think buyers would be fairly dedicated riders (4 or 5 times a week) or competition riders. So what might the numbers look like, "UK Sales"? In reality, I would not have a clue about the breakdown but in 2022 sales were 2m.... I would suggest 1,000,000 per year, ALL bikes bought under £400. £400-£1,200 possibly 600,000 and this might be where profits are for manufacturers. The next group up to £6k that would include the great majority of full-suss e-bikes, 300,000. Anything above that, so only 5% of the market could be the top end stuff, as mentioned in this video. How is all this relevant to the content of this video? The bulk of revolutionary innovations in the cycling industry, will never get to the majority of cyclists. Gearboxes add weight, as do motors and batteries. Gearboxes add immense cost, as do integrated motors and batteries. Would I spend nearly £10k on an e-bike with a Pinion gearbox? No. Would I like one of my bikes to have a Pinion gearbox and Gates belt drive? Oh yeah. But would I prefer (and will spend) that sort of money on a car upgrade, or convert my garage to a spare room? Yes and yes. Derailleurs are here to stay. Lightweight, reliable, and cheap to replace. If the figures I've plucked out of the air are anything to go by, will remain so for a very long time. Especially since gearboxes on almost all road bikes, would be like riding with a passenger due to the extra weight.

At its current price point and the need for a gearbox ready frame I see the combination positioning itself primarily in high end urban bikes, some touring/gravel models and electrified trail/enduro. Weight and drag will not see it enter road and cross country. Gearbox hubs do not seem to be getting much development now, Kindernay has gone bust, Rohloff has no further development, Shimano do not seem to be pushing their Alfine/Nexus models and SRAM stopped making their Sachs derived units in 2017 due to declining sales. Ironically Sturmey Archer gearbox hubs are still being made and developed by the Taiwanese Sun Race company.

I've got a belt drive commuter bike, and love it but a big disadvantage of belt drive that you didn't discuss is if you want to change gear ratios you usually need to replace at least 2 of: the belt, front ring and/or the rear sprocket. They are fairly pricey compared to their chain drive equivalent, and significantly harder to find - especially in the UK with all the Brexit nonsense. Plus there is nowhere near as many options for front ring and sprocket sizes.

You could discharge each cell if you believe it’s dangerous or unsafe and then discard it. Question is how do you know what is good or bad when you’re not trained either in the assembly and testing in batteries. It’s understandable that your bike shops can only sell or wish to sell batteries that adhere to the law from reputable manufacturers, who then go buy the components from china and put their own label on it.

Simple solution: it should obviously be illegal to sell bikes which are not street legal without a big red sign that they are not street legal. If the customer has not been provably informed about the street illegality of the bike, the contract should be void and the seller have to give back the money.

I have an ebike that i use for commuting and am a big fan of them. Can do a 16 mile commute and not be sweaty. But i also have a motorbike and im out on that, at the speed limit because its enforced and im being overtaken willy nilly by guys on ebikes, they cant be identified and theyre blatting around at 40+ mph on 20mph and 30mph roads. Its not something that has happened pnce, it happens all the time where i live. The illegal segment is huge. The supply of them needs cracking down on, dealers need to be prevented from selling them at least, conversion kits too. Electric motorbikes are cool though, legal ones, and will he even better once batteries and ranges increase.

As an e-bike owner, I think all UK e-bikes should legally have a throttle, delivering full power for a few seconds, to assist acceleration from traffic light stops, safely clear junctions, or to avoid risky situations etc.. And increase the maximum PAS speed to 20mph. The law was obviously written without full consultation. I would have liked to have watched the Panorama episode, but I'm not a BBC 'subscriber', so therefore cannot access iplayer content...
@TheLaughingdonkey
@TheLaughingdonkey 7 күн бұрын
The 250W limit is fine for generally flat urban areas however those of us who live in hilly rural areas need around 500W in order to even maintain 3mph pedalling up hills. We shouldn't confuse torque with speed and the 250W limit is discriminatory especially against heavier people in hilly areas where legal ebikes are mostly useless. 500W @ 15.5 MPH would seem reasonable and if fast accelleration is a problem it could also be electronically limited. In the UK we have such low limits on ebikes that I'm not surprised that bikes made for a worldwide market need heavy restrictions for the UK. The UK's harsh restrictions also probably cause more people to break the law. Illegal delivery bikes should either be completely removed from the road or should be type approved/insured/mot'd as they are mopeds and clearly defined in law. This is a policing issue and us legal ebikers shouldn't be compared to them. These companies are making money and they should accept what their responsibilities are. It would be very easy to police this but it has not been done. I think that panorama program was pathetic and sought to cause division, anxiety and hatred on the roads. Panorama used to be a proper program with quality investigative journalism and I'm going to complain to the BBC about it. I also feel if a pedestrian steps out in front of any vehicle without giving it adequate stopping distance then the blame should clearly be on the pedestrian. If the law states otherwise then we're all going to need dash/bike cameras to protect ourselves.
