Good all around review. It’s a tricky horn to describe the sound of, but our host does a really good job.

I have the exact same problem. I still don’t get the way you have your tongue set so it does not ruin your aperture and go over the bottom teeth. Respond fast it would mean a lot your the most close player that has my issues. I have been having issues for 3 years as a high school trumpet lead.

It’s the method Callet and Gordon, etc More simply, it is the position of the whistle.

For all the skepticism in the comments I bought one at ITG from Tony. I was skeptical as well. I think Tony shot himself in the foot for making these because I came in to buy an expensive trumpet from him and left fixing the tuning on my vintage Conn 2 B and Holton revelation . My vintage horns have such a beautiful tone quality but the tuning on some of the notes ruined the experience. I don’t the science behind this but it works! Now I’m kicking myself in the butt for selling my pre war French besson because of the tuning! I hope everyone buys one that has vintage instruments because the man deserves to make his millions off this invention. No one paid me for this comment lol. Thanks Tony!

Just wanted to say this explanation and trying it myself has given me something of an "aha" moment - thanks! I've always had similar issues to what you describe, with my bottom lip wanting to go back and over the teeth. Still early in integrating this, but it's already made some things my college teacher was trying to fix with my bottom lip usage ten years ago finally click - things feel more consistent and supported.

This is it, man. I finally found my issue of constantly getting fatigued without even playing high by using all embouchure and air with my tongue doing whatever it wanted. I was not able to play for long sets and had to play parts down an octave. Now that I've tried this technique, I can play more comfortably and high without resetting while being able to play much longer and more accurately. Time to master this. Thank you lots!

In the interest of true skepticism, I wonder if there is a video of a blind test on this. If not, maybe you'd like to do one? I don't have any reason to believe that you're intentionally fooling any of us, but can you be sure you're not subconsciously changing your playing, based on your knowing if the object is in contact or not? If this device works, we can expect it to be built into every trumpet within a few years!
@arresonance19 күн бұрын
It can’t be built (soldered) onto the instrument as the position needs to be slightly changed depending on the other parameters, including the mouthpiece, its gap and the player’s needs.
@bodyofmystery19 күн бұрын

110 dollar for a weight?!
@trumpetthoughts12 күн бұрын
Yes. But also no. It's shaped and machined so that it fits perfectly to the instrument, and it looks good too. I mean, I guess you could try and fabricate something like this on your own if you have the skills, but I think once you do, you'll realize the expense involved.

Which one works best for the Concert G right above the staff? My A note on my Bb sounds high in pitch. Which material would be best on my horn for that?
@EdmundTrujillo21 күн бұрын
Natural tuning has everything to do with the length of the tube. I’m very skeptical and am not willing to waste $100 to try something out that has no good explanation.
@arresonance19 күн бұрын
No, it doesn’t work like that ;) If it was like you say then different mouthpieces wouldn’t create a different harmonic spread or a brace in a different place wouldn’t change the intonation of the whole instrument. It’s a VERY complex system and all a trumpet maker does is playing with many parameters with address all possible problems. The First Aid is one of these tools: in the right hands, with the right attitude and with patience it does wonders. Or at least it does with some of the best players in the world ;)
@EdmundTrujillo19 күн бұрын
@@arresonancethanks for your answer. I agree that sound quality can be affected by the metal material, bracing, weight all of which work on damping or the vibrational feel of the instrument. However relative intonation cannot be changed without also changing the length of the horn. That’s why we have slides all over the place. I would be more convinced if a blinded player or even a robot would produce the sound with a tuning meter that measured before and after😊. IMO trumpet players, (often the best ones) are always looking to get an edge and if they can perceive or feel a 2% improvement they will at least try a new idea until they get tired of it. Oftentimes it’s a perceived improvement that cannot be measured.

I would recommend a slight adjustment of the mic input in between the talking and playing parts. The talking is fine, but the mic gain is distorting a bit when playing, and thus, for me, does not show the mellowness of the flugelhorn as well as it could. Peace.

I’m not a huge fan of Callet’s method, BUT there’re some true on the “lower lip above upper teeth “ …. will result better for highs. Observe when everyone smile, upper lip always rise, showing the upper teeth, right ? Compare with the Adam Rapa, Charlie Porter’s concept on “sneeze muscles” (hope you understand what I’m saying) and you will see it happen. Bottom lip on upper teeth.

Everybody deals with nerves differently and you have to find your own way of dealing with them unfortunately as the mileage will vary from individual to individual. Beta blockers can help in extreme cases, just stay away from controlled substances. Some players get nervous as hell. Did you know Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand would get physically ill before curtain time? Streisand was so nervous, she had to have the lyrics of her songs on big prompter screens all over the concert hall, even though she knew the tunes. I've seen Doc Severinsen nervous as hell. To the point of shaking, this was at a concert back in the '80's. He was warming up and shaking but come showtime he was fine. A buddy of mine saw Doc down in Miami back in the '80's and said Doc was pacing back n forth saying to himself "I am the best, I cannot miss!" over and over and over while pacing. Maynard would get a little nerves going and would meditate for about 5 minutes before each show. Then there were guys like Bill Chase who would just walk out on-stage calm as a cucumber and BAM! Just kill it!

I keep hearing “tongue between the teeth” but I want to make sure I’m understanding. Are you actually sticking the tip of your tongue through your teeth? I try that but tongue wants jump back. I can put my tongue on the back of my teeth and that works okay but I’m not sure that’s right.

Hi Donovan, I recently came across your channel and have been enjoying it. I'm a classical trombonist that naturally developed a tce like setup, I've only recently discovered and worked out how my setup works a bit more. My tongue sits on my bottom lip through my teeth for my whole range except the very bottom octave and I use vocalisations to change pitch. Aw ah, ee, ish. My chin bunches with the higher pitches and my tongue keeps my bottom lip from raising too much and cutting off the sound. Pretty sure this is similar to what you're talking about in this video. Is chin bunch something you use or not? Can't see because of your beard!

Good stuff. I have never seen all these illustrations. A friend in Florida studied with Jerome. My friend said every week he went for a lesson, JC would say "forget what we did last week, here's what we're doing this week"!
@marklewis9749Ай бұрын
Exactly! It was hysterical. I'd no sooner get the last thing he showed me down, then he would show me the NEW thing he'd been working on! He told me once "I've changed my embouchure 100's of times!" But the setting he showed me in the early 2000's is the one I settled on.

Jerry spoke about how important the lower lip/chin pushing up against the tongue and upper lip was. He wasn't raising the upper lip, it was being pushed up. He liked to describe the action as the upper lip "grabbing" the eye teeth, or being drawn towards the center as the lower lip pushed upward. This helped create the intense compression to get that powerful sound. He described the upper lip as "nothing but a reed" and any tension in the upper lip would hamper the "reeds" ability to vibrate freely.

I feel you should back off the air on the high notes. Use a more "singing with your voice" air on those notes.
@chris430811Ай бұрын
I feel I sort of do this when my tongue pushes against my bottom lip to direct the air. It allows the air to move the notes much easier and allows me to ascend higher easier. My problem is the vibrations eventually stop around high F to double A or the notes in between. It just depends on tiredness. Any suggestions
@trumpetthoughtsАй бұрын
How much force are you using when you play those notes? Gotta reduce the total amount of force to increase endurance.
