How much distance should there be from the edge of the E string to the edge of the neck and the edge of the G string to the edge of the neck? Thanks!

Never built a bass or guitar yet, I was thinking of using a long straight edge against both sides of the neck to transfer bridge location? I think its cool that your giving the end result away, good for you!

Hello, has this ever been used on a classical acoustic guitar ( or nylon or metal strings)? How is it attached? Does the top of the guitar have to be drilled into? or is it stuck on with something like contact cement?. Does it muffle the sound from an acoustic guitar? Can the pick guard be used percussion wise to drum on or does the leather dampen any drum beat? When playing does the thickness matter in terms of it being too high and close to the strings? Curious because trying to figure out how to use this for sound and handling of the guitar purposes?

As I am new to building guitars, I'm just figuring it out on my own, or doing what I see in other videos. Do you care to explain the better way, or can you suggest a video that shows it? I am always looking to improve.

This is one of the worst ideas I've ever seen. You're treating the bass neck like it's a table leg. Please don't do this people. The neck pocket needs some maple shims glued into the sides and then it gets pared down to a tight joint with hand chisels and sandpaper blocks.

I make no effort to hide my ignorance. I am an absolute beginner to guitar building. Do you have any videos you would recommend for me to learn the proper procedure?

@@GuitarGoomba Hello. Thanks for your reply. Sorry I came off as arrogant. I repair guitars and used to manufacture electric guitar and bass necks. I don''t know everything, but one thing I've seen pretty much everywhere is that we want to keep as much wood in the neck pocket and the base of the neck as possible and create the tightest joint we can while just using the screws the guitar came with and not adding extra ones. While your method can help in the short term, it can create problems down the road when future angle adjustment need to happen. The extra screws you are adding will not allow for a neck angle reset and would probably have to be removed and then the holes would have to be plugged with new wood. If the fit has any gaps or is at the wrong angle, we'll add either thin strips of veneer glued on the sides of the pocket, or an angled maple shim to the bottom to correct the angle. StewMac sells a bunch of different shims for the bottom of the neck pocket for various guitars and basses, at various angles, as can be seen on this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXq4q5dmfs-Wnrc Ted Woodford has an excellent channel where he goes through all kinds of repair scenarios. In this one around minute 16:50 you can see him adding shims to the sides of a bass neck pocket: kzbin.info/www/bejne/narVln-lm9yFf9U Good luck! We are all always learning in the repair world. It's always good to share. Thanks for not being mad at me!

With all due respect, based on what you showed here, I wouldn't even think of using your fret rocker. Why? Because the edges have to be perfectly flat. There's another video kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGHIdI15hLeJocU showing how metal fret rockers from cheap to very expensive are almost all not perfectly flat and the guy who made the video tells about how using them screwed up the frets on jobs he did so much so that he ended up having to re-fret two guitars. If an expensive stainless steel Stemac fret rocker doesn't even have flat edges, yours certainly doesn't. Amazinging, he bought a pile of fret rockers and threw most of them away because the edges weren't perfectly flat when he easily dould have lapped them to perfect flatness. That said, you just mentioned sanding the edges but you didn't show how you did it. Just rubbing sandpaper on the edges would not make them straight. What you should do is place very fine sandpaper on a perfectly flat surface such as glass or granite and lapping the edges to perfect flatness. You left out that step which is absolutely necessary and it's the critical step in making or fixing even a new metal fret rocker. Beyond that, I would never cut the fret rocker out with a jig saw (actually a scroll saw). If you just sanded the edges of your fret rocker, I can almost guarantee that using it will mess up the frets on a guitar. And I would NEVER make a fret rocker out of anything but stainless steel.

WHy didn't you just find the center line of the neck pocket and use a straight edege to the bottom of the bass for your center line for the bridge. THen use the measurement of the bottom of the neck heel and and use that measurement at the centerline of the bridge to center the bridge. Use a pencil and your making it way too complicated.
