I am 54 years old and as a kid i had a Blue Grifter just like the video ,i cut the rear mud guard many years later just like the MK1 bike. That gave it a more sporty youthful look😂. Best bike ever.

Wow, this was my favorite bike! It was actually my ten year older brothers bike, became mine when i fell out of love with my raleigh Burner BMX, and all the cool kids were getting the new fangled 'mountain' bikes, mine had the same rack, and the upper brake extensions, great long distance bike, AND you can get your knee down on it! 😅

The gears never lasted long… remember taking a spoke out of the wheel and it would have treads on the end that could be screwed into the gear chamber then pulled out to manipulate 2nd gear and then twist the spoke around the frame to hold the tension and keep her in 2nd gear permanently… ahhh happy days when that’s all we had to concern ourselves with 😢 I wanna go back

Brilliant information 👏. I had the exact same bike, my sister had it first, in the early mid-80s, I can remember it having no rear mud gard( but can't remember how it got that way😂. I loved it. My mates had bmx, mongoose and racer style bikes. But I was more than happy with my hand me down! O and the seat was fantastic, easy on the bum compared to others.😅 👌👍

The Record Tourer small 21 and maybe 23 n half inch frame was produced with pump lugs for retaining a pump. I own a 24 inch and a 25 inch framed Raleigh Record Tourer all original spec but don’t have pump retaining lugs. . i owned a 23n half inch same model and it’s supprising how much more difficult it is to ride up hills than the other two larger framed Raleigh Tourers which I own. I would also say the larger framed ones look nicer for some reason. If you really want a good looking Raleigh Record , see if you can find a MK1 1983 Raleigh Record Sprint

Loved my red grifter beat mates round the block once I’d built up speed to 3rd gear went from last to 1st! Was a heavy bike managed wheelies, ramps as high as could set ones. No light, saved money whilst turning my back at bike shop (for what seemed like seconds) came out bike gone! nicked. Devastated new light no bike! cried back home 😢 sadly ended my Grifter days

This is a long shot, but I'm about to buy a pretty rough arena tomorrow - I need to know what seat post this will take as otherwise I'll need to ride it back without sitting down 😅

Silver SE...just a sec, I am still dreaming...I got it for Christmas in the late 70s and I was the only kid in town with this silver edition. This was in Germany, mind you. I was the envy of every class-mate back then. I explained to them how the gears worked, let them ride it, but got angry every time cause they just shifted it without thinking and I had to reajust them every time. Until I refused them a ride. When I moved out of my parents place I had it stored in their garage but mum always said I needed to come and fetch it Me, being the lazy bugger, kept stalling until she decided to call it quits and put it on the curbside. I love m mum dearly, but this is the only time I extremely disliked her. Still looking for it...

If we had that bike as a kid we’d be laughed at for not mounting the seat properly. The seat bracket gets flipped and hides under the seat, out of sight

Just for information, the Raleigh Grifter in silver was never produced as a SE ( special edition ) it was only the Raleigh Chopper that had the SE tag as it was for the Queens silver jubilee in 1977, only chopper to have mag wheels.

I had a 1976 Rayleigh Arena from new. I even had the same headlight and the same rear red light as seen here. Mine was also metallic light blue. You could have found mine ! The rear mud guard was shorter, as I recall. I think the 5 speed gears were different too. I came off aged 10, and I have four stitches in my head, as lasting proof of ownership !

I’m 51 now so, I remember fondly the Raleigh Grifter. Wondering will Raleigh remake the Grifter after remaking the Chopper? I like the Grifter in Silver or Blue. I remember also those EverReady lights which had huge batteries inside, but are those working? or are they just for show, presuming, sourcing the original batteries will be difficult. The pedometer looks amazing with the mileage counter. I couldn’t afford a Raleigh Grifter or Chopper back then but it’s nice to reminisce. 🇬🇧

That was the exact model and colour I had, I effing loved that bike. I wore out and ruined the rubber mudguards because I discovered if you bent the rubber onto the tyre it sounded like a motorbike when you rode it.

Flaky? In 1973 I started my 3 years at Poly when these bikes were made. I'd be 18. Now (do the math) I'm just as flaky as your bikes! All of a sudden, within a month I've gathered together 4 'Twenties' and 2 Dawes Kingpin's. Bonkers.

brilliant mate. I found a raliegh grifter in a skip and restored it 😁it's now my pride and joy and a talking point every time we ride out. I don't know how we could ride them for miles being so heavy 🤣and how we managed to have children the amount of time the gear slipped and sent your knackers in to the cross bar🤣🤣

This was clearly a bike designed to be ridden recklessly.Judging by the padded headbutt bar. I bet the forks bent really easerly and many a kid got scuffted for wrecking them.
