What might be the problem my FZX250 Mikuni BDST carb doesn’t idle its good at higher rpm but when i drop the throttle it hangs then die no idle
@ChrisSofos5 күн бұрын
@jumarubang4245 many things can be wrong. The most possible sounds to be vacuum leak. Make sure the intake rubbers are not cracked and they're tight. Make sure the carburettor gauges caps fit tight and not cracked. If there's a vacuum operated fuel petcock check for vacuum leaks on it. After making sure there's no vacuum leaks at all, then (and only then) go with the adjustments. I hope this helps. Let me know how you go 👍

I have an 88 GSXR 750 I'm restoring right now. Unfortunately I got the engine back together and I found out it smokes, especially at high rpm. I traced the problem back to a few worn valve guides--it's sucking oil into the cylinders. So now I have to take the head off and replace them. Oh well, wrenching is part of the fun.
@ChrisSofosАй бұрын
@vintagetrikesandquads4012 you're absolutely correct! It is part of fun. You get dirty with oil, it passes you off, you can't find the solution and you drink a lot of coffee. But, in the end, the feeling of satisfaction you get, pays off. Good luck with the cylinder head 👍

Hello Chris! Your videos are very helpful! I have same type of an engine stripped out.I was measuring my pistons and they all seem to be out of tolerance. 75.416 pretty consistently. What now? STD pistons nor os seem to be available anywhere. Did your pistons show similar results?
@ChrisSofos2 ай бұрын
@alexhellx8897 My pistons were well within the limits, so I had no issue with that. I can't remember the values, so can you tell me how far off your pistons are from the limit?
@alexhellx88972 ай бұрын
@@ChrisSofos well as you stated in your video that the limits are 75.440 - 75.425. My pistons were from 1st to 4th. 75.408/75.416/75.413/75.414. Measured with a mitutoyo micrometer. Calibrated.
@ChrisSofos2 ай бұрын
@alexhellx8897 that's a good micrometre brand! Look, it seems that you're off limits. Even though I'd probably put the same pistons in with new piston rings, I can't advise you to do the same. Especially if the piston-to-cylinder clearance is out of limits. The only other option you have is aftermarket pistons, like Wiseco. Expensive, but top-notch. The cheapest solution here would be used ones, but make sure the specifications are well within limits
@alexhellx88972 ай бұрын
@@ChrisSofos i’ ve Measured the bores and it seems that they’re at 75.505 except no 1 which is 75.515. The piston and the bore seems worse at no 1. And to mention that the bores has’nt been honed yet,which would make the situation even worse. I’ ll start looking for a good set of used ones and if i can’t find any, the wisecos it will be then. I haven’t build a motor with aftermarket pistons yet so i must ask, do the wiseco pistons/wristpins go with the original conrods?please advice. Ps. I greatly appreciate your help and you have found time to answer my questions. Cheers friend!

Thank you so much from me as well for the video, I am saving it in a playlist. I have a Yamaha XTZ750 Super Tenere and I think that it has the same carburetors :) . After I rebuild them I try to synchronize them by ear and eye. Only once I managed to make it start perfectly, but it was running too rich and didn't run well when accelerating. Also, at 14:59, there is a tube(I think it goes to the air filter box). I also have such a tube on mine, but where does the other end go? Again, thank you and ride safe :) .
@ChrisSofos2 ай бұрын
Thank you for your kind comment! It feels great to know my video can be of help to someone! Your Tenere has exactly the same carburetors. However yours I think it has an accelerator pump on the bottom of the float bowl (I'm not sure). This doesn't change anything though. The tube you are talking about is an air ventilator. In my FZR goes from the carburetors to the top of the engine. There are some steel pipes that hold that other end. In a few words, it goes to the atmosphere. The factory settings on the pilot screw for yours, is 2 turns out, so start from there and see how you go. All the best!

Thanks to your video I ordered the same sync tool, I hope that it arrives before it gets too cold outside(I live in Bulgaria, the weather is not very stable) :) . Thanks for the video, but I’m struggling to fit the air box properly to the top of the carbs. When I tighten the Allen screws they don’t hold the box tightly enough and keeps coming loose. Maybe a bad design by yamaha? Any suggestions?
@ChrisSofos3 ай бұрын
@judodak I think it's because the rubber has become really hard over the years. Try to heat them up with hot gun or a hair dryer. This will soften the rubbers, allowing you better positioning over the carburettors.
@judodak3 ай бұрын
@@ChrisSofosHi Chris, the rubber boots are in remarkably good condition for the age 1994. I’ve tried every combination. Heated with hairdryer. With and without silicone grease. I even took the four rubber sleeves out and screwed them on individually but they kept coming out when the box was fitted…grrr
@ChrisSofos3 ай бұрын
@@judodak That's weird! From what I can tell the air filter boxes of the '91 to '95 models are all the same, so in the light chance you had an air filter box from a different year, this wouldn't cause any issues like that. The front bolt that keeps the air filter box in place (at the front of the box) is there I suppose? If not, make sure it is. The only other thing I can think of, is that the sponged strips that are on top of the air box and help to keep it in place are gone. In your case they are much needed. These sponged strips are being pushed down by the fuel tank and that way they keep the air filter box in place.

@ChrisSofos4 ай бұрын
@ciogon before you do the pilot adjustment, try to do the throttle adjustment (synchronising them). Then try the pilot screws adjustment like I'm describing it, but remember: don't expect the revs to drop much. Actually the drop it's going to be minimal. So minimal, that you can barely hear the engine's rpm drop. Another thing to keep in mind is that you have to screw-unscrew the pilot screw veeeeeeeeery slowly. If the rpms still don't drop when unscrew, then there must be some issue on the pilot system. Usually, it's the o-ring of the pilot screw. It's cut or squashed, or there's no washer in there. Any of that, can affect severely. Once you do all that, do a final throttle adjustment once more, and you're done. Let me know how you go
