Why YOU SUCK At Writing: Power Scaling

The original thumbnail pits my OC Kaara Tibur against Sukuna and his dad. Kaara Tibur is currently 12 years old in the story, but with her big brain and some prep time she could definitely no-diff both of them at once without even trying.
By my calculations based on a cherrypicked example from my book, Kaara Tibur can move at five times the speed of light, which is way faster than anything in the JJK verse, including Sukuna. On top of that, she has water powers which can turn to ice. Meaning Mahoraga is gonna be taking a ton of different damage types which he cannot adapt to. Kaara Tibur, known for punching ugly bums in the kidneys, would have no issue shattering Sukuna's kidneys.
Finally, even if Sukuna were to use a binding vow and sacrifice Megumi's balls to create a world-ending slash, Kaara would just need to say 'nuh uh' and then the slash- seeing that she's a better character- would turn around and cut Sukuna in half.
"I will forget you by tomorrow, Ryoumen Sukuna. This really was a Jujutsu Kaisen. You are my special." - Kaara Tibur (Definitely)

The Elusive Samurai has a good example for your tactics point. MC is a child with effectively no strength, but is capable of evading practically anyone. Presented with a stronger foe, MC slits his wrists and outruns him until he collapses. The author didn't give MC a super-duper all-new power to defeat his enemy, but instead wrote the MC into a situation that plays to his strengths.

@blugger

It is sometimes difficult to introduce strategic thinking when there's the temptation of "it's magic, ain't gotta explain it!" But J think a writer with a passion (or patience) for chemistry would probably be able to turn even something as basic as "fire go pew" into a terrifying swiss army knife. Otherwise, it seems some writers play with "hyper specific abilities that auto-win after a series of very bizarre conditions are met," something which Jojo stands are infamous for. While this leads to some incredibly engaging scenes (Joetaro intimidating a soul gambler into folding with nothing but a mean look and the fact that he moves fast enough to catch bullets at point blank range), a lot of it can just come off as unnecessarily convoluted and arbitrary and kinda divorced from anything the reader could latch onto. For example, De'Arby (the soul gambler man) basically takes your soul if you ever "admit defeat," even if you merely think it for a moment. In order to set up this ability without just getting pasted by a blue/purple cave man who can punch bullets mid flight, he tricks one of the main characters into a game and takes his soul as hostage. I personally find this to be VASTLY more satisfying than if it were just a domain expansion where violence is just not a possibility.

@@blugger and that's a fair opinion to have, though I do think those "hyper specific conditions" have a place to be enjoyable since it's simply a tool for the writer to flex their creative muscles a bit Exp, having a Fire user in an oxygen low environment while fighting a non-organic opponent or something similar, it facilitates an interesting problem and weakens one side that otherwise would win in a landslide. I think jjk does well in its power scaling tactics vs raw power because (outside of outliers like Gojo and Sukuna) we get fights like with Mahito which turns each fights into a simple game of tag and outside of Yuji,for very good reason that Sukuna and his souls are intertwined,anybody that gets touched directly is GG'S and it makes him a threat without making him too overpowered because his weakness is the same thing, somebody touching his soul. All of that is to simply say that I think power scaling entirely depends on what rules you put in place and how closely you stick or bend those rules without breaking suspension of disbelief.

@@WhoisThatGuy-I would agree with you if it weren't for the fact that there are like 5 characters total who can touch the soul besides Mahito (Maki via the sword, Toji for the same reason as Maki, Yuji, Sukuna and Nobara. Maybe you could throw in a 6th and say Megumi but like, he's never shown feats nor does it really make sense). Like, get any other character besides those 5 previously mentioned (besides Nobara, she still gets clapped) and, with the exception of Yuta (RCT oneshots before Mahito can heal himself with Idle Transfig); Gojo (Limitless) and Kenjaku (he probably oneshots), they're all going to easily die.

@@Joker_Zz he still had to be a threat if everybody could touch his soul,then their would be no point to it,and the fact Nobara can effect him is good because it makes her highly specialized to handle him without making her immune to his Idle Transfiguration,as opposed to someone like Todo who,if he he was capable of damaging his soul, could have easily handled Mahito. But that's my point the tactics of the "pieces" in play matter more then anything else,it's fine to have characters to cover others weaknesses

I think my one complaint is especially with Naruto, the ninja of the story are based around the ninja of the story Jiraiya the Gallant (who Jiraiya is literally inspired from). Outside the ambush attacks throughout the series, ninja are rarely if ever shown to be super sneaky and all about espionage. I don't disagree the power scaling is wack, but I would also say in the case of Naruto and DBZ its because of the cultural inspirations for the series vs general western perception. For example people often equate hardwork vs talent being the theme of Naruto but it never was, it was always about understanding and rising above one's circumstances. Still a fantastic video, and brought up plenty of good points.

Even ninjutsu was not something that they used all the time, since character's chakra pool was limited. During Hiruzen's fight against Orochimaru and the Hokages we hear he say "they are as strong as I remember". Then, in Shippuden, Hashirama and Tobirama became ten times stronger each one, even while still an Edo Tensei. And, again, stealth was important until Sasuke's retrieval arc. Then, on the first arc of Shippuden, during Gaara's rescue mission, strategy becomes non-existent and it's only a matter of "it seems like I'm facing you, so let's fight!".

How I interpret my power scaling is that; at no point is any character (in the same weight class) is incapable of beating another character. Almost every character will be killable within the resources provided by the story. Even still, weaker characters will have the means to seek those resources at their own comfort if they have good enough motivation. I just lock what methods do, or don't work on certain characters based on the target's abilities. For example, one of my characters is effectively unkillable due to unfathomable regeneration, stamina, speed and defenses but in return; possesses little to no means to actually harm opponents she is usually required to support against. Forcing her to fight against much more well-rounded opponents relying on much more fragile teammates because she has less offensive power than the rest of hee team 90% of the time. A lot of her fights are team-based tactics where she is required to position her team in the perfect way while she trades hits or alters the state of the board to her favour but without supporting pieces can't do much. She usually has the option to flee any lethal encounter without support so she is usually challenged in situations where the objective isn't just to survive but actually obtain something or protect something.

It’s always been about trickery and outsmarting, outwitting, or out preparing your opponent. And honestly in many cases it comes down to fate /plot that is heavily tied to the themes of the part that it is apart of. It’s maybe 2-3 fights that are just a test of strength. And one is jotaro vs dio and even that has a level of trickery because jotaro tricks dio into thinking he can’t stop time in order to get the upper hand. They have to figure out what dios ability even is in the first place and that costs them 2-3 crusaders. That is not about who is punching harder that’s deduction, deception, and outsmarting.

Stop defending mediocre consistency. Literally the worst system that mimics nen contracts(binding vows) is absolute trash. It doesn't address limitations nor any sort of equivalent exchange. Its literally a plot device for the characters to not die or win when they want to. I ask you this question, when was the last time gojo did a binding vow? Never? I wonder why? Another thing that literally everyone forgets about is the fact that your innate technique becomes pretty much useless when your domain expansion is over. Yes this is only for a short period of time but then we see characters directly negate this or ignore it VERY early on. Look at Mahito doing domain expansion and somehow able to use his ct afterwards. Look at sukuna using fire arrow after malevolent shrine. Im sure there are others if you look for them as well. This was a concept that was introduce later on that dismantles a lot of fights and logic simply to have a downside thats only prevalent when you want it to be.

I especially love watching shows where the weak overcome the powerful when the tactics are just right or that the power level is just low enough. To this day, when I think about a seamless world where the abilities you are born with have little association with your combat prowess, it's easily Avatar for me. They did a great job in portraying competent non-benders; from Jet, to the Kyoshi Warriors, and of course Sokka. "Airship slice!" is up there as a major moment in the show for me. Like...Sokka had the idea to seamlessly take out a whole fucking capital fleet dude. Gotta disagree with the Naruto one, we’ve seen stuff like the byakugan day 1 we’ve seen them cause natural disasters in Naruto, like when Naruto fought the 1st tailed beast or when orochimaru levels konoha, they were able to do this because they summoned legendary beasts and powers not many ever have that’s why majority of the verse he’s stealth tactics, and no teenager besides Naruto sasuke and Sakura touch the top tiers the rest are adults or actual gods

I think now that we’re starting to get to the point where new mangaka will have grown up with power scaling, it’s likely that we’ll get a series in the next decade or so that really just NAILS it. That learns from the successes of its predecessors while avoiding their pitfalls and fumbles, and where it’s clear the author just enjoys power scaling for its own sake

Kagurabachi is, to me, powerscaling done extremely well. 7 enchanted swords, the swordsmen who have mastered them, the government full of powerful sorcerers trying to control the swordsmen, and a shadowy group of sorcerers wanting to steal and take the power of the swords for thsmsleves. The swords ended the war, and their power is known and controlled so when those swords are let loose, their power has been built up and the carnage feels earned. The swords have three powers that can be used in new ways based on the skill and creativity of the user. There are no asspulls because the swords have set logic, but can be constantly reinvented upon. It's pretty much perfect and there's none kf these artifical walls such as dbz having ss1, ss2, ss god which left behind major characters that got powerscaled out of conflicts.

It almost killed someone regardless by deception, and was beaten because kakyoin probed the illusions. That was the real end of the fight, past that was just Jotaro meming. The entirety of part 6 happens because Pucci outsmarted Jotaro at the start, most fights with Kira are based around strats, like why did you overlay that with punchies stuff when it’s a prime example of tactics?

In defense of the HxH situation, Nanika has been perfectly set in stone she's painfully costly to use by anyone, it was used as a perfect moment to reveal the truth that was already suspected of... Killua can ignore the rules, because Nanika loves Killua, simple and perfectly believable. What's more, the consequences, despite being an outcome Togashi was forced to do (He intended Gon to stay dead) he recovered very well by leaving Gon without nen. A very real consequence that can be acknowledged by the lack of... Gon. It was also presented they would go on their own separate ways from now on. So if Gon came back as a protagonist, he couldn't play that card either way again. If Killua entered the picture or he was the protagonist, then yeah, i couldn't argue that the event broke the stakes quite a bit. But i could see him playing around that, being Nanika has been in danger herself and still wouldn't attack

The fact still remains that her only restriction actually do not exist tho. She isn't costly to use, and there is no actual repercussions to using her powers. Her powers don't have any limits nor rules, she can do whatever and if this wasn't the case then Killua having free wishes would simply not be possible. This turns Killua into a plot device, but it does create an interesting conflict with his family (no way he's getting to roam around free now, Illumi and possibly Silva will have him turned into a free wish puppet or might not eve have to compromising their goals with Killua if say he's manipulated to permanently add other family members in the free wish white-list).

Champ of a division facing a contender, contender has lost to guys the champ has already beaten. Then the contender pulls an upset cause he could have a good style match up, executed a perfect game plan, set up a perfect counter shot, etc. Wish it was more often like that in anime than power gap big so i win.

not to be a massive super nerd about things, but im gonna be a massive super nerd about things for a second. in theory another avenue for countering hyperspace projectiles is the use of gravity wells, both natural and artificial to cause anything traveling in hyperspace to veer unpredictably away and or get atomically pulverized into pieces small enough to cause only minor damage or even get blocked by ray shields, assuming the safety on the hyperspace drive is turned off which if it weren't would just cause the projectile to harmlessly slow down to a stop in front of the target. that is to say that the discovery and development of hyperspace weapons would be a game changer, but more in the sense that it forces ships to focus into either maneuverability as a defense or gravity well generators as defense, with both hyperspace drives and gravity well generators likely seeing a process of gradual miniaturization to the likely end point of disposable drives mounted in missiles and corvettes with gravity wells which has its own knock on effects to make classic rebel hit and run tactics non-viable. just some initial thoughts on the idea.

I like how JJK somewhat weaves power scaling into it's themes with "The Strongest and its unrivaled solitude". Gojo and Sukuna were established as inconceivably above everyone else as 1 and 2. It's also why I think Kashimo was a bit unsatisfactory. He was The Strongest of his Era, like Gojo and Sukuna, he's the only one other than Sukuna to understand Gojo and his plight. However, when people talk about who number 3 is, Kashimo is rarely the first or second character to be brought up for the position, and I think that makes him an ugly duckling in his own theme. Also him getting dispatched so swiftly to show how strong Sukuna is was unnecessary since he literally just crowned himself as number 1 when he just killed Gojo.
@PlanetDiablo16967
@PlanetDiablo16967 5 күн бұрын
Kashimo wasn't killed quickly simply as a display of strength. Sukuna, at this point, knew he'd be running a guantlet and didn't want things to drag out. You can actually see this with how he engages with his various opponents. Any time, someone strong comes along that can maybe kill him or damage him heavily in the long run, he tries to dispatch them with one heavy blow. Think Waffle cleave for Kashimo and World Cutting Slash for Yuta. But he plays around a bit with weaker people, like with Higuruma and Kusakabe. At least that was my reading of his behavior.

@adora_burst8143 5 күн бұрын
@@PlanetDiablo16967 It's a fine interpretation. However the only problem I have with it is that he very clearly did not take Yuta all that seriously since he didn't kill him before he opened his domain. Which he very much could have since his output was picking back up. He refers to Yuta as the main course. Someone to savor until he kills him. Which would give credence to the idea that he took no chances with Kashimo, but as my original comment should suggest, I don't think that should've been the way to deal with Kashimo's full strength.

Meanwhile, Yuta was pacing himself because they had half a dozen contingency plans and Yuta was involved in most of them.

While I didn't finish this video, I feel compelled to pause and share my thoughts. The concept of a power ceiling doesn't always need to be shown early in a story. Each power system operates within its own unique context, and the absence of a clearly defined power ceiling isn't necessarily a flaw. It's a matter of understanding the context and the reasons behind it. Now for your Naruto analysis in terms of its power system. You get so much wrong when there could be good critiques of it. For example, Kakashi's use of kaumi later in the series(An argument can be made that he got stronger/a mental amp after his father died). But you go down the laziest arguments possible without saying anything that is an actual critique. When we understand the power system's full context, you say stuff feels out of place. What does this even mean? Wouldn't that mean earlier stuff makes sense? You don't give an example you suggest an idea and act as if it is true. When we are shown giant animals destroying things when we are introduced to the story. You draw a false equivalency to the idea of a ninja being sneaky to the war arc. The only ninjas in the ninja world that are entirely stealth-oriented are the anbu, not the regular ninja. The regular ninjas have aspects of it, but they are multi-purpose, as shown by the very first mission in the story(escort mission). Then you say punch the city and destroy everything. What is this about? During the chunin exams this happens, stuff like this happens when Pain attacks, when the nine-tails attacks. People attack villages, which usually means the village must fight back. You act like this is a critique but just the reality of their world. What does the strongest being young have to do with the power system losing its appeal? It is established that the younger generation gets stronger. Do you know why? Because the older generation can guide them. There are older characters like Guy, Kakashi, A, Killer Bee, Madara, Hashirama, Obito, etc, who are all pretty strong. The exceptions are Naruto and Sasuke, who are just exceptional for obvious reasons. The whole part of a genin is just lazy as well. Naruto did not retake the chunin exams. When he comes back in part two he sees everyone is chunin. This is more of a title and Naruto is clearly not just some regular genin. Sasuke also left when he was a genin. This video is so low effort in terms of the analysis part.

Man, I really needed this video! I'm writing a web novel with superpowers and all that, and keeping the power system stable is being one of my major worries. Oftentimes, I find myself thinking of all those epic fights between the characters I created (and that I'm planning to make happen), only to stop myself all of a sudden once I notice it's getting too flashy for the premise of the power system. A character of mine will hardly be capable of exploding a building to dust, even less with a single attack, and if they manage to, they're Peak-of-The-Scale, in-universe... SO WHY CAN'T I STOP IMAGINING JUJUTSU KAISEN-STYLE FIGHTS?! AAAAAGH!

Sukuna was just recently spawned so we didn’t know who was stronger in till that final battle where sukuna had set up a plan to bypass infinity to kill gojo it was still a close fight. The take on different abilities being too much for the audience I just generally disagree on. The power system in jjk is explained good “but the techniques weren’t fleshed out” but wouldn’t it be boring for more people to have the same basic moves also I’m pretty sure every ability was atleast shown most of their capabilities. I tend to try and not think too much about powers, how strong they are, and how they work. Mainly because ultimately, the power that characters have is a completely arbitrary value assigned to them so that those characters can have their stories told. They're exactly as strong as they need to be for the story to happen. You can make any ass pull you want, even something as cliche as the power of friendship, so long as it makes for a good story and doesn't directly contradict established rules. The powers exist to serve the story, not the other way around.

Just to tell you something. The rankings such as Genin and Chunin, they don’t just measure on how strong you are, but rather on how experienced you are. Let’s bring Iruka into this, He was much stronger than characters like Sasuke and Naruto (without the chakra mark and Nine tails chakra) throughout Part 1, but was heavily outpaced due to the powerscaling in Naruto (in Part 2) having a higher ceiling due to other antagonists (Akatsuki and others later down the rode) for Team 7 to strive into becoming stronger in the show. Iruka is experienced, but he wasn’t strong enough to be a Jonin. You can also take Kakashi into this, he himself stated in the beginning of the chunin exams that he became a jonin at the age of 7, due to his experience with others in his missions along with him being a prodigy, which shows that characters such as Itachi and Shisui were more than likely to reach this level in Konoha (which they did). The rankings in Naruto DO matter, as they do show how strong and experienced you can be, which everyone in the show (in shippuden) was chunin or Jonin (such as Temari and Kankuro).

Ignoring the point about the games (following turn based rules and all, and competitive literally working on regulations or fan banlists and restrictions), the Pandora Box point does not work at all with the manga and anime. Both the anime and manga imply and talk about fatal wounds in battle but never commit to it either. The exemple of Psyduck in context is basically a lifeless doll that only exists to take the damages, but the damages themselves never matter (it's a zombi puppet that decomposes either way, and the paneling will just lie to you about what was actually hit). Pokemon will be pierced, cut in half or heavily damaged only if they can regenerated (Deoxys getting half of its body blown off, or manga related, Arbok getting cut in half only for it to just regenerate) or it not mattering (hitting an image, a clone, or an element of the environment and in the most aggregeous exemples in both the manga and the anime, consequences being completely ignored and reversed like Celebi completely skipping over character death in the RS arc immediately after said characters deaths or Ash getting resurrected in the first movie and any movie with death in there after it).

@@charnalk5572 I'm not sure how this conflicts with the points I made about power scaling. Pokemon Adventures does good power scaling, and it opens a pandora's box the franchise typically tries to avoid (ie, Pokemon death). Showing us a zombie psyduck's face melting shows the audience what can happen if they get hit with the attack. Just as a guy ducking out of the way of a brick-shattering punch shows us how dangerous the punch was without ending the fight. The Pandora's box is that Pokemon can die, and Pokemon Adventures doesn't need to slaughter a bunch of Pokemon in front of us to convey that or use it. They just need to address it as apart of the stakes for their battles and tell us how they work around it.

Hydro pump doing massive damage to Staryu, despite the type effectiveness indicating the opposite. And yet Bulbasaur will take no dammage from said attack because... of type affinity, in the exact same chapter? The Pokemon manga has really poor scaling and is on par with the anime in that regard (oh look, the affinity to which this Pokemon is immune to does not matter anymore now that we need the protagonist to win. This is actually worse in the manga because the anime at least justified Onix as being soaked, the manga on the other hand has it work because Red gave friendship speech), it mostly goes off of vibe (some have decent explanations, other just work until they don't until they suddenly work again). P.S: I forgot to specify this, but no it did not melt Psyduck's face (and this really makes me you didn't really read poke spe and just went off of the cheap shock value memes). In my main story (im also writing a one-shot, but this is a bigger series when I am fully ready to write that lol) I have no problem with power scaling, as the powers I have already have a height they can go and not go beyond. I am nerfing one character though, for the sole reason that he is too op, but will be present more in the second part of the story. In actuality he isnt nerfed, but he has gotten a mental block in his head making him think he is not powerful, due to a stone that was said to contain his powers been taken away. Furthermore he has learned himself to store a bit of his power so he can use it later so he thinks he is using up that bit. His powers do come back at a moment where they are needed, cause the villain of the story needs that power against it to be stopped and even with that, it isnt a fair fight, not because the villain is that strong, but because he basically has the power that makes him be able to prepare for litterly anything. My world is alive in my head and I cannot accept a stupid reason for a character to win a fight, thats why I am still struggling with how another fight will go, BECAUSE IT IS REALISTICALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR THIS GUY TO WIN AGAINST THE OTHER GUY. So I will need something that can make the one character beat the other without being beaten himself... SIGH back to thinking

The thing about this for manga is that writers can't just take time to reflect. The workload and time constraints make this hard. That's why HxH is doing well in its endeavors, because Togashi who is already respected because of Yu Yu Hakasho has the ability to take hiatuses more frequently. That's why Berserk had consistently amazing art, and never went downhill like we see many manga do, the hiatuses help. Most mangaka, especially big shonen mangaka, don't have the ability to do this that often, they can't take too many breaks. Look at Gege, who's taking some breaks a lot recently. If Jujutsu Kaisen wasn't in huge demand and coming to a close to the end (at least the end of part one) it may have been cancelled.

Scary enough, my world has 20 cosmologies, each cosmology has 5 sub levels, and yes, there is also the "boundless cosmos" in there, it is real big, but i am still working on how my magic systems and power scale would work, because i an still beginning the story, like i'm still out there in the prologue and can't even continue the story properly right now, so i hope to make the system better (deadass, concept of systems be making the things up). Well, in my magic power scaling, i will simply use a reference, on how i scale it. Example: Force applied × mana applied + stamina applied by % 15 kilotons of TNT × 100,000 mana = 1.5m KT TNT 1.5m + 200 stamina = 3m KT TNT Yes, this is how my world works, because planets are crazy big by default, 5 billion KM diameter at minimum (it can be lower via other factors, and yes, the cosmology is plain big as hell so even universal worlds has to adapt to the ever expanding boundless cosmos.) The most average stats that an adult human is: Strength: (by tons) Base: 100 Peak: 500 Limit break: 1000 Durability: 10000 (by tons) Speed: 100 (km/s) Mana: 10000 Magic mastery: 10 Everyone in my world has to be more durable than they are strong, because a strength higher than their own durability and you will see them rip themselves apart, logically. At normal scale, strength will only be 1/20 of the durability, 1/10 is dangerous, it can put serious self harm. Durability = mana amount, this can change based on many factors, because normally, higher mana than durability will cause their mana to overflow and will actually put serious harm to the victim, the mana overflow can be alleviated by magic mastery though, but with no training put in it, magic mastery will be baseline "low" Lastly, humans have to be this strong at average, my world is full of hellish dangers, with the worsest ones being the apocalyptic anomalies, my MC is an anomaly by the way, a concept defier to be exact, so she is strong, but not far above other powerful beings, for as far as i know, the "average" stats you can see is merely the surface of what potential they have, soul ability, spirit ability, innate ability, talents and core weapons, made from their core forces are some of the many factors that makes the certain being actually dangerous, these core forces also grows with the user. So basically, I can't afford to have a powerful character with no hardwork included, magic mastery is there for a reason, and those stats that i made up, those things are still the lowest of the lows. Limits: here comes the most brutal part, with great power, comes with great toll on your life, your core forces, despite the fact that these core forces that every being have originated in the boundless cosmos, these forces rely on the certain thing that possess it, so these forces may save you, but not all the time, there will always be limitations as the concept of inhibition does it. When using magic with no mana left, it will consume life force, immortality and invincibility is not saving you from this, infinite energy is still the surface of what the higher powers out there has, infinite energy is merely universal level, it's not even close. Skills and tactics matter the most, even if you are stronger, if you don't know how to deal with trickery and the art of confusion, you are but a fodder, what's the point of power without properly using it? that being said, "skills are there for a reason." "There will always be a way to deal with something, boundless? they are no exception, you can be boundless but you have to remember that even if you are lonely, you are not alone." Control is everything, make sure to use your very own as an advantage, or else, it will go against you. And yes, to me, skills and tactics > power, power does not decrease weaknesses, but skills and tactics does. I will not include core forces, and the whereabouts about soul abilities, spirit abilities, innate abilities, talents and core weapons, because as the video says it, these things i have are convoluted power scalings, these things need over explanations and will never get close to exaggeration since they legitimately need *"explanation"*

I have one more thing to add about mostly the power scaling community: Comparing characters from different characters is (in Shounen) often straight up impossible. A lot of Shounen for some reason at some point open the Pandorra's box of "faster than light" movement, or punches, or similar. There are quite a few problems, when that happens: 1. You can't use our laws of Physics to start calculating stuff. Why? Well, there are quite a few reasons: 1.1 The relativistic formula of kinetic energy (which you need to start using when the speed is faster than 10% of the speed of light) is this (I use LaTeX syntax here, if somebody is interested): E_{kin} = \sqrt{(p c)^2 + (m_0 c^2)^2} - m_0 c^2 where c is the speed of light, m_0 is the mass of the object at rest and p is linear momentum. The relativistic formula for linear momentum is: p = m_0 v \gamma where m_0 is the mass of the object at rest, v is the speed of the object and \gamma is the Lorentz factor. The formula of the Lorentz factor is \gamma = \frac{1}{\sqrt{1 - \frac{v^2}{c^2}}} where v is the speed of the object and c is the speed of light. If you actually start to use that formula for an object for an object AT the speed of light, you will get a division by zero. If you use it for something faster than the speed of light, you get a negative imaginary result (you know what complex numbers are, don't you?). What's that even supposed to mean? Another problem you will get is that the comparison of imaginary numbers with real numbers is mathematically undefined. 1.2 Ok, Let's just say that the speed of light in that universe is faster than in ours. You get a different problems: Our atoms wouldn't be able to hold themselves together if the speed of light would be faster. That means that in that universe you would need to change pretty much every universal constant for stuff to just exist. At that point you can't even be sure that lifting a pen is of the same effort in that and our universe. 1.3 As far as our physicists know, it's impossible for something which is slower than the speed of light to reach it. And the same goes the other way around. That's why the whole idea of the Alcubierre drive (or as it's better known: warp drive) exists: Instead of moving yourself faster, you make the amount of distance you need to travel less. 1.4 Let's say we ignore the problems listed so far. What would happen if somebody would move faster than the speed of light: Simple, you would travel back in time., congratulation of opening the Pandorra's box of breaking causality. 2. How would you even react to that? Let's just say the fist of an enemy is moving FTL, the information about that is moving slower than the fist. How would you even start dodging it? The enemy hits you before the light of that fist reaches your eyes. Maybe you send the info back in time? Well, that breaks causality, so you send back in time that you were hit, so that you aren't hit, but if you weren't hit, why would you send that info back in time? But if you don't, you get hit. 3. You would literally obliterate the atmosphere of whatever planet you are on if you only get close to it. Congratulations, you just set the atmosphere of the planet on fire, literally.

I do wonder if powerscaling show could learn lessons from the good "MC so strong you have zero doubt that could win almost effortlessly". One punch man for example. The narrative focus is usually very different (usually the fights are more comical than serious). Though I do imagine that there's something there that could make the narrative of typical battle shounen more interesting. I mean you could probably do that for any kind of show honestly if you know what you are doing.

I like the video overall but I think you missed the mark on the Naruto bit. Yes the power scaling go a bit wonky towards the end but it was never something about espionage and even by the end of the series. Naruto and sasuke are the only ones that are genin that are stronger than a jonin. Up until then jonin even in shippuden are still considered the strongest characters. Also team 7 are the only ones who could be considered the strongest in the series as teens, but every other heavy hitter is an adult. The series makes a point that experience and tactics will outweigh raw power as most of the jonin adults can handle the mc until the end of the series.

I would say I definitely disagree with your point about Naruto. The ninja would use espionage as to not start issues with other villages. And they've been shooting giant fireballs and summoning kaiju since the beginning of the series Naruto made a forest full of shadow clones in the first arc they've always had these insane powers. And while as the comment about them being a lot closer to Battle wizards or Martial Art mages is definitely true it's always been like that And even up to the last fight in the series with all the incredibly powerful world shattering ninja they were still using strategy and tactics to defeat their opponents. The Juubito fight is them exhausting as many strategies as they can think of to defeat him and many more examples of this exist. The powers themselves are just on a larger scale than Then the beginning of the series and people mistake that for a lack of strategy but the strategy is very much still there.

A lot of his points are misleading or completely disingenuous if not contradictory depending on what he wants to say in the moment. It's honestly not a good video, it's completely inconsistent. "Why won't ninja just destroy X or Y village" is like asking why we don't nuke X or Y state... Most obvious answer is fear of escalation, and that's forgetting that those powers are exceedingly rare and/or impractical to use. Naruto has a lot of flaws, but people pretending that the power ceiling was broken in Shippuden like the story didn't start with the manga telling us that the nine tails was so strong it was casually leveling moutains is disingenuous af.

For the ice power, one thing you could also do is make them utilize ice in a different way. For example, covering the fire in a blanket of snow will render it unable to get oxygen and thus fizzle out, or even just a regular blanket. Or fire off fast moving, bullets of ice that pierce through the fire as they are solids going through a gas at rapid speeds, which would let the ice hit the target before it melts. Or just making a gigantic rock of ice that when melted into water will cover the person with said water, and their fires as well, thus making said person defeat themselves even if you can't control that water. This is of course, assuming that the fire is strong enough to fight back against the ice, I don't actually get why in a lot of stories for some reason ice is weaker at dealing with fire than water is?? It is an incredibly cold chunk of water-rock. You can just hit somebody covered in the head with it and nothing will change, the ice won't immediately be reduced to nothing, it will still remain fine, just hit them over the head with the ice. Chuck it at them. Can't do nothing, unless the fire is strong enough to immediately turn the ice into normal water, which as said, I'll be assuming that is the case.

Alluka is what you should be complaining about, she appeared practically out of nowhere and was conveniently conntected to Killua enough for his wish to be free. Even then, Gon can no longer use Nen even after being healed by deus ex Alluka. As for Kurapika, chain jail pact means he is limiting the usage of his own ability to a very limited group of individuals. He limits his strongest ability as well. Of course plot-wise it is irrelevant because we won't see Kurapika's whole life after killing the Spiders, but in-verse it works. HxH set it up, restrictions are multipliers of one's power, the harsher the consequence for breaking the rule are, the stronger the buff is. Chain Jail forcibly puts the target in Zetsu, meaning their nen strength becomes useless. The buff that mattered to Kurapika here was Chain's literal durability to contain Uvogin's raw strength. Uvogin was destined to lose. And Nen contracts are great. They're pretty consistent and are all well explained.

Dude. Idk if you still read the comment section on this older video but please, PLEASE, read World Trigger. In my humble opinion, it has the best power system I've read. That probably doesnt mean much but you have to read it because... 1. The power system legitimately can't be overstepped. You cant gain much more power than what you're given at birth. And... 2. The battles are logical and tactical. The weakest power user can take out the one with the most power just because of excellent planning. It's still progressing so maybe it may do some classic shonen things but, with the way the author writes it and the themes of the story, I don't see that happening at all.

then it's not a character with ice powers. it's a character with either waterpower or tempter manipulation. in opposition to that the colder ice would be better for a pure ice user like permafrost or dry ice and other ice related things that are dangerous. if we give an ice user water then steam then why would they use ice in interesting ways instead of water. that's a pandoras box from your own words. if you want "depth scaling" you can't go too far away from the origins of a character's power, or it will feel like "horizontal scaling". by saying a character that was introduced with ice powers has control over tempter or water without good foreshadowing will most definitely seem like an asspull in it of itself. and if a character is revealed to not have ice powers but tempter manipulation, they a whole new bag of questions come. why wasn't he using the more effective fire attacks. why did he just learn about this now. why does he think he only has control over ice till *event* happens

If you plan to have your story eventually reach God-like power scaling, have the Gods be introduced early into the story. They don't need to be antagonistic or even majorly relevant, they just need to exist. That alone prevents the issue of your power system just jumping to levels that can break a reader's suspension of disbelief, because you've already put the idea into their mind that this is where it CAN go.
