I was completely unfamiliar with G10 before watching your video, and I was very impressed with its density and strength--until about the five-minute mark in the footage. Here, you have little or no difficulty peeling off partially damaged layers by hand! Doesn't this strongly suggest that the bond between the multiple layers of fiberglass and epoxy in the G10 laminate is quite weak, with little shear strength? I'm NOT an engineer but wouldn't a riser built with G10 be prone to fracture and delamination? I'm probably missing something and hope you'll correct me. Best, Chris
@Helmbowman4 күн бұрын
Hi Chris, i never had any delamination problem, ive done testing, and g10 always break first before delamination. If you have concerns you can make riser against the layers, then there’s no way of delamination. Its easy to peel after layers where already lifted, so no concerns. Thanks for this excellent question! Feel free to ask anything!

@Helmbowman: Interesting, but a bit confusing- would you mind adding a bit of details on the PVC, may be demonstrating how well it bends before glueing it, sharing also the cross section ? So if this was an uniform material with no direction/grain, then it should have an tensile strength of 3.5MPa to 75MPa- that's a very big range from very weak to average, so it really makes a difference what exact product you are using. As comparison, most average woods are between 50MPa and 100MPa I have seen so far. But I know of PVC only bows, just never seen any chrono measurement, so I don't know if there's may be flavours of PVC around with a good performance. I doubt it a bit, if it's not specially treated. Also the MDF wood layer on top probably cost some performance- why exactly was this added ? Can PVC rip under tear? difficult to believe. However, I liked the bow shape a lot, this is a triangular bow, no ? very elegant curves, probably good performance. best regards
@Helmbowman7 күн бұрын
Thanks for comment! The MDF layer was just for glue up, it was removed later, it serves as pressure strip to keep PVC backing flat, because sometimes the pressure from rubber bands can bend backing and makes cupping effect… Unfortunately i dont have lot of information on that PVC profile, i get it from hardware store and its just labeled as PVC profile, its 2mm thick, but its really flexible and hard to break… The shape of bow reminds me on Egyptian angular bow or modern hybrid longbow design, that shape was my goal. I need to make heavier draw weight bow to judge its performance comparing to my other bows, but it seems as good performer for 28lbs bow, all in all i think PVC have great potential as bow backing.

@Helmbowman8 күн бұрын

Thanks for trying with a natural fiber 😃!I read in this paper, hemp and epoxy don‘t fusion very well and a „ compatibilizer“ helps for that. In this study they had some improvement with lignin: google „Use of lignin as a compatibiliser in hemp/epoxy composites“ Benjamin M. Wood, Stuart R. Coles The weather sucks allover europe. Time for spring to come! By the way found a good paper giving overview of biocomposites using wool/keratin. Google „Keratin Based Thermoplastic Biocomposites: A Review“ Shavandi is the author. And the problem of fusing natural fiber and plastic often requires such „compatibilizer“. The simplest are just acids, grinding up the surface of tge fibers, but it‘s tricky-some require tge right temperature/volume/plastic to work, did not find yet the go-to solution Someone mentioned wood glue, that works well with natural fibers, just the overall tensile strength is lower than with epoxy, your bow was pretty thick and strong bending, probably have to lower expectations then.

@@Helmbowman here is what I did. Soak the hemp in water. Like sinew. Squeeze out the excess water and lay it flat on a board. Comb the hemp ,like sinew, and then soak it with woodglue.
