Awesome. I have a 1969 solid fiberglass Bear Green Fox at 45# and it is my favorite bow. The only issue I've noticed is string nocks that are cut into the fiberglass limb tips tend to be very hard on strings. I think a thick coating of something or maybe heat-shrink tubing would help.

Nice! im fascinated with that old bows, you can coat that with epoxy and sand it smooth

I also have same bow. Shot alot of squirrels and fish with it. Use a high performance string material like dyneema D-97, really helps with handshock, and over all shooting. Thanks for sharing, good shooting to ya, Steve

Also remember back in late 80s, a lady brought to Cloverdale tradional shoot. An ol Ben Pearson fiberglass that she cut down , cut new nocks, and backed it with pig skin! It shot good for her! Steve

Bro my advice to you is to never cut your arrows right down to the handle. The length of the bow's maximum draw + 4 cm = the length of your arrow. This way the arrows do not lose ballistics and fly more accurately than shortened ones.

hell yeah! i wonder if you could make this larp-safe (35# at 28") by making it a bit longer. most comanche bows are gull-wing designs, and I wonder if that'd help as well.
@Helmbowman2 ай бұрын
Sure, maybe 110-120cm in length, I guess that would be around 35#
@caseysmith5442 ай бұрын
@@Helmbowman Also to help, a bow you made is more an Apache design D shortbow over a Comanche B shaped/Gull wing longbow very similar like a Great Plains to easternmost Rocky Mountains bow from Texas to lower Manitoba/Saskatchewan where tribes made bows in B shape mainly however, some made bows in a longer design in Oklahoma/Texas if the wood from Osage was available in long lengths looking more like a modern no shelf American Style Longbow only with a deep oval grip.

Do you use the cord of the toy bow ? Can you share the new length ? Nice job 🙂

Thanks for watching! I use some random cord, the string of the bow was too short for that job… Total length is 35.5 inches

@@Helmbowman Dacron/Spectra B--55 or a D--77 is all I would use on a pure fiberglass no tip overlays or a pure wood bow. I have seen people (Clay Hays) use D-97 for some wood and sinew-backed bows even his oldest son use D--97 in making his string for a wood and Sinew with acual snake skin on but person makes himself or buys a string so he is 7.66 cm or 3 inch shorter then bow string height for his nearly recurve desgin for his hunting bows over a standard 10cm or 4 inch shorter on bow then for Recurve, basically making for a longbow string height on a recurve. Clay Hays, his oldest son goes endless loop with D--97 and a string wrap on entire string like some Kids bow strings (think Bear modern all fiberglass in 2 heaviest draws or an SAS Robinhood) so he can have bow when strung at brace height so he does not need to twist up his string as well have a bombproof string that just happens to be quieter then a regular endless loop string but not a Flemish twist. I used a B--55 for my old duel sided 60 inch or 152.5 cm all fiberglass American Style Longbow from Actionbow by Actionrod because one brand Legend made between a Recurve and Longbow size requiring a size in USA not easily found in a half inch or 1.25 cm size I needed for string made for a 60 inch bow and brand did math. I would have gone for Bear as brand makes Flemish twist where string needs to be for models between a recurve and longbow for all models but brand is only making D-97 for all but 58 inch or 157.33 cm Grizzly model of classic bows as modern bows can handle a faster flight string.
@Helmbowman2 ай бұрын
@caseysmith544 Its interesting idea to wrap whole string, need to try that. Im usually using dacron b55 and make flemish twist bowstring. Joerg from slingshot channel uses spectra woven rope for his crossbows, they are far more durable, maybe that would be worth trying
@caseysmith5442 ай бұрын
@@Helmbowman Bear Has it for the Titian and Firebird bows as shown on the Bear Website only problem is brand uses a brass attachment for string loop becuse wrap was made over entire bow string first before making end serving loops and a full string serving.

fiberglass bows are great! I have wood bows, they are expensive and vulnerable, I hate having to be so careful with them. I have 1 fiberglass Mongolian horse bow, I love it and it shoots like a native bow, off both sides, vertical or horizontal, my cheapest bow is my favorite bow. (I'm native) it's great to see you wear protective gear, that stuff is toxic. I used to work with fiberglass and Kevlar and carbon fiber on experimental aircraft, I'll never work with that stuff again.
@Helmbowman2 ай бұрын
Yes they are really dependable and durable, only downside is as you said that its nightmare to work with them!
@caseysmith5442 ай бұрын
I have wanted to take a new Mongolian or Chinese fiberglass Bow where static wood tips are not great but rest of bow is fine and make a real B shaped Souix or Rather Lakota/Nakota bow from one of the shorter models so I can have a true plains style shortbow, maybe add a small rest on each side using wood from static limb tips.

@@Helmbowman I have not begun but I want a bow like this for my use. I only have a 24--24.5 inch height for my bow. Bows like this can be found on e-Bay or on least trusted Alixepress for most countries except Japan, even in USA/Canada on Amazon.
@Alizudo2 ай бұрын
Wait, huh? How did you get it to 43#? It's not even recurved, and the toy is only 10#.
@Helmbowman2 ай бұрын
Because i cut it to just 35 inches of total length, and stiffen handle area, that adds lot of weight, original bow was about 53inches long

Bracing the middle increases the draw weight considerably
