You made it and I didn't, so don't take this as criticism as much as outside observation after watching the whole series.. Wake up and get started earlier! Too much riding at night. It's also more time in the hottest part of the day Listen to your bodies and rest more, and actually rest. We make poor decisions when sleep deprived and exhausted. For example: continuing to ride while looking for a tent, after spending days in a hotel-- you could have had one sent to the hotel! Amazon or some other site. You may have had less delays had you taken a week break to properly address bike issues. Were you eating properly? Maybe not shown, but diet seemed to mostly be baked goods and fatty foods. Not eating enough while on the bikes for sure. Eat snacks while riding. Feed bag on the bars. Know when to "quit". There's no shame in changing the plan for your health or safety. Taking a bus or a train across truck congested borders. Riding on those highways near Istanbul was incredibly dangerous. I get it, you were so close and it feels like failure. It's missing the forest through the trees though. You rode across Europe to Turkey.
@user-gq2vw8ef6o4 күн бұрын
There are camp sites but they are more in a remote areas.. Anyway in Bulgaria you can put your tent everywhere no problem, tho you won't have showers, toilet etc.

The Balkans are 99% in Bulgaria, what's up with that "Bulgarian Balkans"?
@PursuingMountains7 күн бұрын
There’s a large portion of the range that runs through Serbia
@dwartbg17 күн бұрын
@PursuingMountains The Balkan Mountains, also known as Stara Planina, stretch approximately 560 kilometers from eastern Serbia across central Bulgaria to the Black Sea. However, the portion of the Balkan Mountains that lies within Serbia is relatively small compared to its total length. Only about 20-30 kilometers of the Balkan Mountains are located in Serbia, primarily in the eastern part of the country near the border with Bulgaria. This accounts for roughly 5-6% of the entire length of the Balkan Mountains. The majority of the range is situated in Bulgaria, where it forms a significant natural feature.
@PursuingMountains7 күн бұрын
Yes, we biked through the Balkans in Bulgaria as opposed to the Balkans in Serbia. The title is also meant to highlight the fact that we were biking through that particular section of Bulgaria as opposed to the coast or somewhere else within the country. I don’t see what the problem is.

You should have gone in Veliko Tarnovo or Edirne to have your bikes checked up. Also I don't understand how shops didn't have inner tubes. Pretty much every bike shop sells Shrader and Presta valves.
@PursuingMountains7 күн бұрын
We could find plenty of tubes, just not 29 inch tubes with presta valves
@martinicc676 күн бұрын
@@PursuingMountains Yeah here usually only road bike tubes come with Presta valves, but ever since Gravel bikes became more common shops usually supply them. In Bulgaria you can definitely buy them and have them delivered within 24 hours either to where you're staying or the nearest courier office. I'm surprised you didn't find anyone able to tell you.

Buy & carry a bug hat & bug jacket, it will change your life 😉 As for insect repellent, I carry 3; deet cream for face, deet spray for bare limbs & citronella for clothing as deet dissolves synthetic fabrics. We are based in BC so have a lot of experience with mosquitoes, horse flies, gnats, black flies, etc.
@PursuingMountains6 күн бұрын
We wished so bad that we had a bug hat 😅 We will have to try cintronella on our clothes! Thanks for the tips.

@@PursuingMountainscitronella doesn't work as well as deet but it is better than nothing & it doesn't dissolve your clothes & gear 😉

As a Brit living in Bulgaria..Haskovo, there are lots of those small window bakeries..cheep as well. The street food at these small window shops is good. If holidaying in Bulgaria, on a tight budge, you can eat cheep at these small places. Liz, you should have played it safe and visited a hospital to see to your problem..reduce the chances of a serious infection. Anyway, glad you made it.

I've learned from backcountry skiing that some days in the outdoors you have to redefine what success means. You got to ride the entire trail from Squamish to Whistler, swim in the river and camp in a completely secluded spot with no one around. And you didn't die of heat stroke! I would not count this as a failure.

F.Y.I. 'bike packing' is just a word. It was invented or coined to: Sell proprietary weird shaped top heavy bags that pull your seatpost backwards, and to give you lots of complicated mounts for things in many places, rather than staying with sensible larger lower riding panniers. Also, hauling loaded bikes over unrideable trails, fallen trees, atv washout and trail ruination, etc. May I suggest a pair of hiking boots and a knapsack? For back packing, which is the origin of the word? And roads and panniers for Bike Touring ? Bike touring, cycle touring is the established descriptor. Why is everyone trying to invent a clutzy non- fun activity ? Btw I've cycled across Canada four times so I'm kind of an expert opinion.

Just completed this route a few weeks ago before the heat with loaded mountain bikes and it was really tough! I would not attempt it on gravel bikes. We went Squamish -> Whistler, stayed in Whistler and then Whistler -> Pemberton the next day. It sounded like you were attempting to get to Pemberton in one go? That would have been wild. Nice job on what you completed in those conditions!

IMO I think you guys had too much gear for an overnight backpacking trip. Could have each shed a lot cause with the heat and that much rough terrain was too hard. Paneer bags on back probably caused too much drag. But you learn from failures and become more experienced bikepackers.

I'm glad you loved your trip here in Belgium. I often feel like we beglians don't appreciate it enough. It is so refreshing to see it through the eyes of people who come here for the first time. I'm sure it was a good choice to stay a day longer in Brussels. There is so much to see and do that it would be such a shame to only spent the night there and continue the day after. During the ride from Ghent to Brussels I could literally track you on a map based on the images in the video. Good luck out there.
