DJI Action 5 Pro vs Insta360 Ace Pro

I have to say that the Ace Pro can definitely compete with the DJi Action 5 Pro. I also have both, my personal favorite is the Dji. It's more about what image quality you like. But we live in exciting times. They squeeze what they can out of these little cameras. Great comparison Phillip 👍

Well I'd say it comes down what you use it for. I have ace pro And I find it useless for more action based, 4 season use and even social media in a wide range of environments. Plus, it's fragile compared to others. DJI mic 2 directly connecting to 5 pro is a huge seller for people wanting good sound well in wide range of environments. No sorry of having your battery door open. Ace pro will be the best for straight forward or backwards blogging when close the camera. Ace sucks for filming yourself on the car dashboard. I'm sure ace 2 will have great upgrades too but again serious outdoor users it won't matter. Built in mic on ace 2 will be amazing im sure but again its useful for close use. Many people also use mics on these cameras to be further from the camera.

Great video Phillip. I’m looking at this for motorcycling and I feel like the insta 360 does a lot better going by trees and cars. The image seems smoother, not so chaotic. Color science seems a little warmer and seems they had different strengths in the shadows. I’d probably look a the second version of that. I’ll check out your review in the coming weeks. Thanks!!

DJI missed a trick on the Bitrate being lower than the action 4. They will do a firmware update to fix but should have launched it with higher bitrate to begin with. DJI will fix it they always do though. 👍 For me DJI have the perfect package action camera, the way you can wirelessly connect 2 mics now is epic. Also just got the new handle with battery inside, it’s great for vlogging set up.

Ace Pro's optics look a lot weaker, but I slightly prefer how it handles color. DJI looks like they cranked up some kind of sharpening filter.

I own both of these action cameras at the same time. I wonder if you've felt that when holding the DJI Action 5 and turning to another direction, there’s a noticeable pulling sensation in the image. When turning quickly, the footage looks very dizzying. I think the main reason is that the Action 5 has a wider angle, right? Is there any way to solve this problem? Because I really like the natural colors produced by DJI, while the colors from the Insta360 Ace Pro are more saturated.

Turn up your shutter speed to 1/120 and frame rate to 30. Quadruple shutter from frame rate. Your problem will vanish. Choose less wide also.

It is wide, yes, very wide actually, and I'm guessing that's what you're feeling. I use mine in de-warp 99% of the time, and I don't really get that feeling.

I switched from the AcePro to the DJI Action. Not worried about low light as I have the pocket 3. I have never been worried about breaking the gimbal. The pocket is not an action camera. The action is good enough for me and MUCH lighter than the AcePro.

I did the exact same and will get the pocket 3 in a few months. The ace pro 2 will have the highest specs of all the cameras, But does that matter in the end? Plus, A lot of us action camera users absolutely need to use wireles mics. Now that DJI mic 2 connects directly with high quality connection is a game changer for users. Film well doing action or snow and rain with out having the battery door open. Yes, the ace pro 2 will have that huge new built in mic. It will be the best of the 3 for close use right out of the camera mic, But useless when you're filming and not next to the camera or wanna capture sound in a distance. Just my perspective. Plus, I hate the flip screen in several enticements of use.

Both are very good during daytime and hard to decide which one is better than the other. Hope you're going to do a low light comparison between these 2 cameares as well to see how stabilise especially when there's movement.

I doubt it. The others are 10-bit 4:2:0, so nothing wild, it’s not 4:2:2, and also both are running at pretty low bitrates currently, so is it really something we’d notice, no idea.

I don't know how you can name a camera Pro and not have 10 bit 4:2:2 recording so you can match cameras and not lose it in post. My last gig required 10 bit which meant sadly the Ace Pro was out. It is my personal favorite action camera, but I don't feel the Pro moniker. :)

Not one of the action cameras on the market has 10-bit 4:2:2. Funnily enough the Ace Pro has the highest bitrate. The Hero 13 and Action 5 Pro both have 4:2:0 encoding, but much lower bitrates than the Ace Pro.

Well, I think 4:2:2 in an action camera would probably overheat something crazy. I honestly don't see much difference between using it at 8-bit or 10-bit, but maybe that's just me. I don't really push my grades that far, but who does with an action camera.

Pretty good real world comparison covering quite a lot of scenarios. Both are pretty neck to neck but I would go for the Action 5 owing to the battery life and Inbuilt Internal storage which is quite important for me and is also something that makes it stand out against the ace pro. Also you playing with your kids added a personal touch to the video which gave it a special feeling while watching the video. I like the fact that they weren't artificially pushed into the video and rather become organically part of the video and that makes this video much more wholesome.

The Ace 5 Pro is last year's model and it still holds as good as the newest DJI 5. I can only wait for the next Ace Pro release, they are going to murder everyone.

The Ace Pro is great, but mind you the Action 4 also holds up with no problems at all, and in some cases I've noticed that because of its higher bitrate contains more information in the image than the Action 5 Pro, but I think DJI have an update dropping soon to render that problem.

I do happen to be a DJI user with the Action 2, Action 4, and, as of yesterday, the Action 5. The Action 5 is not an "Upgrade choice" but an "Add-to choice" and will be my interview camera for the dual DJI Mic 2 feature. Anyway, your keen comments of interest in this video while you walk/run the streets, point out the lighting variances, the trees, and the slo-mo is so engaging. Both are pretty close really, but for me, the Ace Pro has a slightly more natural look overall. I actually like the fact that the Ace uses a straight forward 8 bit rather than 4:2:0 10 bit and helps backlit stuff with that face track. I have both but I’ve tucked the Action into a box until the update appears. Occasionally on a large viewing screen, that bit thing turns up, whether it’s processing or bits but the Ace just looks comparatively more natural to me. I would like slightly more control in auto mode on the Ace, like being able to limit the ISO to stop it going into daft numbers in really low light. Like the Action say… 100 -800, or even better 100 - 400. I’m quite puzzled why the Action 4 allows 100 - 200 ISO but the Action 5 allows 100 - 800 as its minimum. That plus the lower bitrate is kind asking for noise artifacts!

I agree, and I'm hoping DJI will drop a good clean update for this, allowing those who want to burn through the battery in an hour with a high bitrate, and those who don't care to have a lower bitrate and 4 hours of battery life. 10:30 a perfect proof that the action5 has better dynamic range. Sky highlights are better dealt with and also shadows on cars are lifted slightly more although it seems like ace pro has more contrast

Yes, the sky in that shot is totally blue, which is freaky to me, and I don't think I like it, in fact I'd really like DJI to add the option to turn off hdr so that shot doesn't look so freaky. You can't compare, but the Arri Alexa has 17 stops of dynamic range and it just looks more natural. On the other hand the burnt out sky of the Ace Pro bothers me the more I look at it. I guess pleasing us isn't easy lol.

They both have strong points. The Action 5 Pro clearly has better focusing on you at vlogging distance, the Ace Pro remains soft... its biggest weak point has been close focus. I like the normal colors of the Ace Pro a bit better, but of course Action 5 Pro has a great D-LOG M profile just for color grading, something the 8-bit only flat profile in the Ace Pro doesn't. The Action 5 Pro is creating too much of an HDR look in the standard color profile and sometimes gives a smooth color to a face or wall when the Ace Pro shows more natural detail, but again that doesn't apply to D-LOG M. It will be interesting to see what Ace Pro 2 brings but right now the way I see it is: GoPro, the weakest technically but if you really want the niche add-on lens system or just love their colors in bright, bright sun... sure buy it. DJI / Insta360 both have excellent cameras with different weak points so its up to you want you want... there is no "one" camera that wins at everything (unless Ace Pro 2 somehow does, I doubt it).

That's right. They are all good, and they all have their pros and cons. The Ace Pro 2 will surely be exciting. There is no camera that does it all perfectly though, it's either too small, too big, no 10-bit, not flat enough log, small screen, big screen, low bitrate, too small a sensor, too big a sensor, too little focus, and on and on and on. Right now it's about choosing the right tool for the job, and we have three competitors that all have something incredible to offer.

Just want to say that on my 15 year old 1080p monitor both look very mushy and colors are washed out, but on my new 1440p they are very sharp and colors look good. I also feel like the audio on both are complete trash with my cheap gas station earbuds, but suddenly with a better headset the audio is alot better. Strange how that works. Until everyone has perfect eyesight, visual perception/taste, the same monitor and headset i dont think this will reach a unanimous verdict. I have never seen anyone complain about the camera something was shot on if the content is entertaining. "yeah that was a pretty cool double backflip over a pit filled with lava, but imagine how much better it would have been if it was filmed with a Action 5 instead of a GoPro"

If you scrolling faster from 10:20-11:40 you can see a big difference between dji and ace in term of exposure changing....ace pro have rock steady exposure, but dji constantly goes darker to lighter...also colours are more natural on ace pro, and better contrast, especially shadow are more natural, and on dji shadows are washed out and have bluish tones...

@@PhillipSkraba I like the folding screen but in general I still was surprised by the size and weight of my Ace Pro... it's just a bit too large for an action camera IMHO... I think GoPro Hero 13 is perhaps the upper limit for size while being nicely mountable to me, of course DJI Action 4 / 5 are even smaller and lighter yet. I also feel the door design on the Ace Pro leaves it possible for a bump to dislodge the door seal underwater and makes me feel I have to use a case, something I don't feel with the GoPro and DJI designs. It all comes back to *none* of these cameras win at everything... even with my new Action 5 Pro I'm shocked it doesn't have the timed capture or starlapse type modes that GoPro and Insta360 have had forever for example.

Both are good, but I don’t know why I don’t like the dji, maybe it’s the extremely digitally processed image. I know that people are going to favor the Ace Pro but to me, it looks too overprocessed. Almost smartphone quality like. The action pro has better dynamic range, the ace pro a better lens and larger sensor for lowlight. The Ace Pro is to fragile to be a proper action cam. So I think I'll check out the Action 5.

I kind of agree with you. At the end where I'm comparing lenses, the Action 5 Pro has me and the sky in the background fully blue and exposed. It doesn't feel like dynamic range but hdr, the Ace Pro has a blown out sky and I actually think that looks a little more natural. Both are great though, and I really hope DJI add the option for higher bitrate and the option to turn that damn hdr crap off.

Ace pro definitely my choice, use it now for 6 months for my vlogging. It has a lot to offer that the DJI does not have. When I meet other vloggers and they use gopro or dji they are always amazed how the insta works while i make my vlogs, it makes them considering getting an insta too. For now im not getting that warm from the action 5 in their line up its an improvement, but not a deal breaker to get one at the moment. No one talks anymore of gopro.. whats going on...

To be honest they’re all good, they all have their pros and cons. The Ace Pro is a very good vlogging camera. If I had to choose one to vlog with it would probably be the Ace Pro, BUT, you can vlog on all of them, just like you can do action on the Ace Pro. It’s down to your personal choice.

Well, I use 25fps as it’s the European standard. 24fps in Americas standard. 30fps is tv standard. 60fps and 120fps for slow motion. Pal in Europe, NTSC in America to avoid flickering.

Oh gosh no, these little things can’t have any optical zooms and focus, as an action camera goes through such rough treatment those internals would be damaged instantly.

Sure, but they’re all 4:2:0 with a low bitrate, the Insta360 is an 8-bit with a high bitrate, kind of levels the playing field a little bit.

@@PhillipSkraba i agree, we are all so sold on 10bit but, many will be watching on a monitor that is only capable of 8 bits per channel. so extra detail is lost anyway. They also say the average person can distinguish about 1 million different colours. which is about 7 bits per channel. so 10bits is 3 bits you paid for but cant see lol. it really is about bit rate, the higher the bit rate the less data lost in transfer due to compression.

They both look good. It looks like the Action 5 retains more information in the highlights whereas the Ace Pro has better shadow detail. The biggest differentiator is the Action 5 having 10 bit log, giving you much more creative flexibility in post. I imagine when the Ace Pro 2 comes out shortly they will surely have added that as an option

I don't really have to imagine, it's sitting right here in front of me. However, everyone is wild about the 10-bit, but it's not 4:2:2 like on your Sony A7S3, it's 4:2:0, and it's bitrate it capped at 100mbps at this moment in time, so we're here begging DJI for an update, as whilst it might be fine when vlogging to have a low bitrate, there are those who require more pro footage out of this pro camera.

Very interesting how the background detail changes between the cameras. One scene the ace has more another dji does. DJi is way wider than the Ace.

Yes, they work in their own mysterious ways. The Ace Pro 2 according to leaks is even wider, so that’ll be interesting! All great cameras.

I don't even have to watch...insta no.1 but the difference here is the price and... popularity of the camera, Ace pro is not that popular especially in Poland, so it will not be the first choice in every market.
