What I love so much about Erwin is that he is about as human and realistic as it get, while being unbelivable badass and 100% committed. He was also basically the first to be taken out in both of his charges. Also, real life leaders with simular personalities like Erwin have an tendency of being a bully and extremly revengeful, but Erwin is neither. Erwin realized genious when he saw it, and he gave alot of goofy, un-diciplined and "bully victim" type characters alot of power (like Hangie, Armin and Miche. People who real life Erwin like leaders would paint as weak)

Dude that was beautiful. Your breakdown was flawless, and I won't be the first person to say that Erwin Smith is one of the greatest badasses in literature history. If you can find a character that plays the role of antagonistic foil for the main character I'd love to see it. I remember seeing a lot of that in Thanos but he'd already matured into the big villain by that point

Though if Erwin serves as the setup / foreshadowing for Eren's parallel character arc down the line, can he really be called a foil character? Isn't a foil someone who ideologically opposes the protagonist and is supposed to be overcome / proven wrong?
@E.B.Andrews
@E.B.Andrews 7 күн бұрын
Foils can parallel a character without necessarily opposing them. Note there is a specific type of foil where they share a lot of qualities but tend to oppose a protagonist either ideologically or physically and they are the antagonist. Great examples are Shen from KunFu Panda 2 or The Lollipop King from Wreck it Ralph. They have the same background and challenge as our hero, but they take a different path to overcome the obstacles.

People actually think that character driver stories are ALWAYS better than plot driver stories. Most of Christopher Nolan's films (except for the Dark Knight and probably Oppenheimer) are plot heavy. Most of his films are heavy on expositions. But that does not mean his films are inferior.

@@E.B.Andrews I don't agree that all the plot threads get tied up. There were a lot of loose ends. Cailyn goes from wanting to help the Undercity in S1 to gassing it and its people in S2 ep3 which is ignored later in S2. Vi and Ekko never have a single conversation in S2 despite being friends. The Zaun vs. Piltover conflict is randomly dropped halfway into S2. The Chem barons seem to have been forgotten about. Jinx 180's from being a villain in S1 to a good girl pretty much at the beginning of S2 instead of it being a gradual character development over many episodes. There are a lot of loose ends and half-baked character and plot threads that are blatantly unfinished.

What about theme driven stories? I understand that there were at least three types of storytelling, these being those that touch on ideas and subjects.
@E.B.Andrews
@E.B.Andrews 19 күн бұрын
So if I’m being completely honest, I feel like if you write with a character dilemma in mind, the theme you believe in will kinda naturally work its way into your story. BUT I will try to find a good movie or show or - WAIT! Gladiator! The original one! I’ll do that maybe unless you have a suggestion. I’m open to ideas.
@nahuelbilliani734
@nahuelbilliani734 19 күн бұрын
@E.B.Andrews thanks for the advice. The question is because on the Overly Sarcastic productions channel they had a video called "trope talk: grimdark", where they expressed that among the three types of storytelling, the theme driven one is where they usually thrive. Stories like Warhammer 40k, Dark Souls games and Berserk are some series associated with this genre.
@E.B.Andrews
@E.B.Andrews 19 күн бұрын
@@nahuelbilliani734 I’ve been meaning to watch Berserk, so I’ll give that a watch. And I’ll give it some more thought to see if there’s any good strategies or things to focus on, I just know I run the risk of making preachy characters if the story’s message is my main focus.
@nahuelbilliani734
@nahuelbilliani734 19 күн бұрын
@E.B.Andrews From what I understand, the message in theme-driven stories rely more on world-building elements (structure of scenarios, political conflicts and development of different societies) and philosophical theses. What I do have to highlight, in the case of grimdark, is that none of the main characters are presented as traditional good guys (They have their shortcomings to such an extent that it is very difficult to be able to support them in their decisions all the time.), rather they only become nice people at most, and at worst they are even worst than trash.

It is kinda cool to think Ekko started and ended everything. My main point is that Caitlyn and Vi’s relationship is the consistent thread that holds both ends of the story together. Yes, other portions overlap here and there, but they aren’t literally hand in hand for the entire story.

I feel many modern shows fall into the trap of trying to tell too much with the time they have available, specially western shows. The Dragon prince made the same mistake in seasons 4 and 5 (after an outstanding season 3). Maybe it has to do with how western shows are produced and the Netflix factor of not knowing if they will be there for a season 3... I cannot see a western studio making something like Frieren or Vinland Saga, that goes slow and many would even say is boring (it isn't, well, maybe Vinland Saga s02 is a little boring). Some shows feel like you are watching a Tik Tok feed, switching storylines every 45 seconds. And that's exhausting.

@E.B.Andrews 22 күн бұрын
Yeah, I messed up what platform Arcane is on. Consequences of watching Clarkson’s Farm on Prime while writing this script. Anyway, I wouldn’t argue that Arcane’s ending are incomplete. I would argue that it is not a case of "two opposing types of story telling." Character focused stories that aren't too rigorous with plot aren't like that because being character focused means that you _can't_ be plot focused, it just means that being character focused with a sloppy plot is _enough_ to be enjoyable by an audience. This also applies vice versa The reason that Arcane is a cut above so much other fiction is because the writers actually took the time to properly plan out the story and flesh out both the characters and the plot to be gripping and completely intertwined. It stands out because not many stories manage to do that when It's simply a lot easier to focus on either plot or characters as opposed to both and still have a good enough result at the end of the day. That ease just makes it very common not to fully engage both at once. However, that isn't necessarily to say that stories focused on either or are lazily written, just that it isn't actually a case two different, incompatible aproaches, but is rather a case of what authors bother to put effort into
@E.B.Andrews
@E.B.Andrews 22 күн бұрын
And I agree that is one of the large appeals of arcane. What I hoped to convey in the video was how Vi and Jinx had a portion of the story that was more heavily weighted towards character while most other characters are still well developed, but they carry more of the burden of carrying the plot.

The ending was good, just short. It needed at least one more episode for each act to fully realize what it was going for. Still, it was a good ending and did pretty neatly conclude all of the character's stories. I can think of countless other pieces of fiction which have absolutely terrible endings. Arcane isn't worthy of such an insult as to claim its ending ran it into the ground

I personally related to Jynx because of Powder’s core motivation. What does powder want? To serve and help Violet, to be useful and make her big sister and brothers proud. Powder is desperate for love and approval for validation and a feeling of being useful. Problem being she tries to help and accidentally hurts everyone. She is a 10 year old orphan so can’t blame her for too much. Just the part where she didn’t listen and stay behind. But who at that age listened to much of anything? And what is Jynx’s core motivation in season 1? To help Silko and make him proud. It’s the same motivation but with a different person. When Silko dies he isn’t angry or anything he just tells her she’s perfect. Thusly fixing that mental issue. She didn’t have to prove anything or be useful or help him he loved her unconditionally she just couldn’t see it until after he was dead. What is Jynx’s motivation in season 2? To stop being Jynx and to protect Isha. Someone who she loves and who loves her each purely for its own sake. A mutual love and respect for its own sake. Point is who hasn’t done something they regret? Who hadn’t struggled with their own insecurities? Who hasn’t taken someone for granted and only sees how much they had after that person dies?

that comment on mel was not only inaccurate but also uncalled for😭 the fact that her character arc in relation to jayce ends pretty quickly doesn't mean her character isn't deep. there's plenty of multi layered conflict between her and ambessa, her attachment to keeno and attitude towards her general legacy as a medarda. i cant see why you would say her character isnt deep or is stale

On my opinion, i think she lacks emotion and reason on her actions. She does stuff and says stuff but there's never a deep introspection as of why she does this things. For me, she feels more like a prop to Jayce and Ambessa on both seasons. For Jayce to push him into using hextech as a weapon on s1 and for Ambessa as an object to her wicked and complex love on s2. Her whole arc of becoming a mage doesn't awaken or show a lot more about her besides becoming a badass so it's a bit hard to sympathize with her. Of course, i think you have every right to like her and i wish that next series works better on her, i just feel that as of right now she's just not very appealing to a lot of viewers.

The comment on Mel is a smidge warranted. She is very plot driven. Yes, she has drives, and an interesting conflict with her mom. There’s potential there for her to be something very complex, and I could have missed it during one of the 1,426 scene changes. But, what formed Mel? Why isn’t she like her mom? Does she love her mom despite her flaws? Is she conflicted One way or another? These are the things that I wanna know to feel close to a character. Otherwise, their plot devices. Which is fine. But I don’t want to spend more time with that character. I get bored. Show me why I should care… not you specifically. I mean the writers. What makes Mel Mel, and what are her core beliefs that I can depend on or watch them get warped? Without this stuff, Mel could have exploded and I’ve have thought, “oh no!… send in the dancing lobsters!”

It's interesting that because of your video i realized why i started liking Jayce after hating him for most of the series. It was because on ep 9 he finally shows how deeply he cares about Viktor. No pride, no stupid decisions, just an act of selfless love for someone he cares about at the point he is okay to die just to not leave Viktor. "i thought i wanted to bring magic to the world, now the only thing i want is to have my partner back" Here's when he got me. Edit: And Mel...yeah. She's gorgeous and all but even her arc with her mother feels too shallow to care about her at all. The only thing i like about her is that she killed Maddie lmao. Besides that she is just infuriating on s1 for how much she tries (ans succeeds) to manipulate that dumbasss Jayce. On s2 she is...idk, kinda meh? I really hope the writers work better on her as she will surely be important for the Noxus series. I can't stand her being this bland.

They did pull Jayce’s character through at the end and humanized him. All the Jayce and Viktor stuff online never made sense until the very end because it was the first major time Jayce really demonstrates caring for Viktor, not as just a colleague, but as a friend.
