Having never ridden in a city, do you prefer the bike lane next to the curb, and then car parking, then driving lanes, or do you prefer the bike lane, then car parking, then driving lanes? It seems to me, from just watching, that when the bike lanes are next to the driving lanes, and people can park next to the curbs, that there's less obstruction in the bike lanes. Maybe it's just a crap shoot, and it depends on the area.
@BrianMcDonaldКүн бұрын
On paper, I like the bike lanes that are next to the curb and protected by the parked car lane, but like all forms of infrastructure, their effectiveness depends on preventing people from parking in them, keeping them clean, and making sure they don't become icy death traps in the winter time. The bike lanes that are only separated by paint are made worse by the same dynamics, where people park in them or they wind up being where plowed snow collects which drastically reduces the space you have.
@johndunbar2393Күн бұрын
@@BrianMcDonald I just reread my comment, and realize I asked the question the same way, twice. Lol So, thanks for understanding what I was trying to ask. I had heard someone on another NYC bike riding channel, comment about bike lanes quite awhile back, and it made me curious as I started paying more attention to the obstructions. I guess it's just the nature of the beast, that is a large city, heavily populated, and densely populated at that, that people are going to utilize a space to park if they want, regardless of where the bike lane is. Thanks for the insight, man!

@ yes i agree, i was just thinkin your bike is for sure more of a city 🏙️ kinda bike. There’s mad hills out here and rough terrain on the roads cuz of the dust and construction stuff etc. I have a trek dual sport which I commute on and it’s handled the surfaces well. But I feel like it’s too slow. So I want something that’s sleek looking like a race bike but able to handle rough road surfaces

I'm surprised how many different uses the bike has, and that isn't considering the possibility of swapping out chainrings or wheels/tires. When I got the bike it came with a 40t chainring and a 10-52 cassette, and that gearing was too climbing friendly and not "fast enough" for me so I put a 48t chainring, and coupled with the 10-52 cassette I've never found myself wishing I had some easier gears while going uphill on road or trails. I thought "I can always switch to the 40t if need be", but that moment has yet to arrive. What kind of/size tires do you have on your dual sport?

Which jacket and glove combination would you recommend for cold weather riding? I am swapping from car to bike commute due to congestion pricing so need to update on my clothes.
@BrianMcDonald15 күн бұрын
If you're starting, I think the instinct is to just wear the kind of clothing that you would wear for the same temperatures when walking around, but I think most people find that that gets too hot and many underestimate how much heat you generate when biking. It's hard to make specific recommendations because everyone has different cold tolerances, and if I were to tell someone to wear the same things I do would probably make people think it's not enough which might be true. I have Pearl Izumi lobster gloves and I will wear a merino wool liner glove to give me extra warmth when temperatures drop below 20 degrees. As for a jacket, wind blocking is a must and will make a big difference in how you feel the cold. If you can find a jacket that is wind and waterproof, that will set you up for success and worst case scenario you can add layers underneath it to bolster things up if you find it inadequate.

What are you wearing to stay properly warm in the winter biking and do you shower right away when returning home or do you wait a bit? I just don't want to get sick lol
@BrianMcDonald17 күн бұрын
If it's around 30 degrees I have a winter base layer that blocks wind, and a winter cycling jersey with a lightweight windproof vest on top of it. I have winter tights and wool socks with winter shoes. I have lobster gloves for when its cold as well. I think a lot of people don't realize how much warmth you generate when pedaling, so the challenge becomes less about staying warm, and more about keeping you insulated from wind/cold while not overheating. If I plan correctly, I can arrive at my destination without being sweaty and be fine immediately.
