The jacket is awesome! About 10 years ago I made a rag quilt out of flannel sheets that were not holding up well. It turned out great, but it was so heavy by the time it was done, I struggled to use it, so I donated it. I like to think maybe someone else discovered it and loved it, maybe even still using it.

@thewholehomeКүн бұрын
I’m not sure I understand but thanks for watching! Free clothes is not the ultimate goal - but hand me downs and passing on what we’re done with is an amazing way to be more sustainable in the way we consume clothing. So it’s less about needing free, and more about the world really needing a more sustainable approach to the clothing industry. If that means sharing and passing on things without charging friends, then that’s amazing.

I love that they’re starting a buy nothing new year! We’ve LOVED it in so many ways. The underwear question is a big one haha! One other commenter just said they make their own from old tank tops etc. which I thought was clever. I think it still requires elastic but it’s a good idea!

The best clothes to thrift are in Charity or Opshops as we call them here in Australia is clothes that a decade or 2 old. Vintage, some forever pieces. Brands made in Australia of top quality brands, some who now do not exist. Online isn't the same as looking, feeling, does it speak to me and trying on. I look for natural fibres and good quality, brand name, not so much. The point is you don't need to buy new and you keeping clothes out of landfill. I also sew, fabulous for altering or making a new garment out of great fabric. I only brought one new top this year and it didn't wash up well. Huge regret. And a pack of socks. Undies I will be sewing soon out of old tanktops I never wear. Bras will be the only thing I will be buying new this year. Secondhand everything is so much better than new, better for the enviroment and I will not support 'fast fashion' companies with horrific labour practices.
@thewholehome2 күн бұрын
I so agree on feeling items being so much better! I find jeans work online when I know the style and size for a particular brand but otherwise yes I’d rather the charity shop. And I need to try making my own undies! Why have I never thought to do that?!?! That’s brilliant!
@beccssmith62852 күн бұрын
@thewholehome I remember years ago people were making them and I thought it was cheap. Not now, I follow a few on KZbin who have used their leftovers stretch jerseys etc or upcycled their sons too small tshirts. A lot of underwear is rubbish now, so thin, not sewn well (who wants to repair underwear) or the elastic is crap, so I've decided I'll be making some soon. And I have plenty of elastic. Going secondhand is easy, buying new has also become a waste of time and money. Great talk by the way.

I loved this video! I have been following for a few months now, trying your sourdough routine (and failing so re-adjusting slightly), loved hearing about flexi-schooling (btw you are very lucky your school even suggested it and agreed! Lots of families would love that option but sadly their school will not agree. We are still trying to figure out if it’s for us or not). I haven’t been following the trad wives ‘drama’ but it’s interesting! I am a SAHM with a Saturday job and I like it however the plan is for me to work more when both of my children are at school. I would quite happily stay home if we could afford it financially. Saying that I am immensely grateful that there is a choice and if it makes sense for a family for the wife/mum to stay at home and she likes it then why not. It goes the other way too, if a mum wants to work full time because she loves her job, go and do it, amazing, if you can’t afford to stay at home but have to work than that’s the sad part when I feel there isn’t much choice. Love your content, love your sourdough and sewing in a non trad-wife way and just love hearing about your normal family life and meals and things you do. Happy and Healthy 2025!
@thewholehome7 сағат бұрын
Ah I’m sorry the sourdough isn’t working right yet! Keep trying and let me know anything I can help troubleshoot. And I so hear all those SAHM thoughts, I love that you get to do what you want - that’s the dream isn’t it! I think SAHM is different from trad wife, and in a sense neither are wrong if they’re truly what someone wants. I think I see the “trad” movement as moving the decisions making, financial, and other powers away from the woman and putting it more on men which is a part of it I struggle with! Then there’s the whole influencer trad side of it which is another ball game all together as people portray, encourage and celebrate a life they don’t actually live as by nature being an influencer is a job with the power to bring financial independence. Big topic 😜 I’m going to dive in more!

In terms of skincare and makeup, I don’t know where you are in the world but I’m a bit useless on makeup cos I use it slowly and I have bits from a brand that’s shut now. But in the UK PHB ethical beauty has been my top choice so far. Google where they’re sold cos they’re a little hard to get hold of sometimes. But worth it in my experience. Skincare wise in the UK Evolve Organic Beauty is my top choice. They work really well and are one of the most truly sustainable brands I know! (Also female founded and a high rating B Corp.) Sometimes I get stuff direct from them, sometimes I search unopened bits on Vinted! Here’s the link for them if you want it (aff link) tidd.ly/3JAlsYN Not to say they’re the only one - but after a deep look at the brands here when we moved, they came out top top. There’s also a blog of my top bits from them on thewholehome.co.uk.

I love your videos- we are making some big changes in our family life and I’ve been very inspired by your content. I too have SO many thoughts on Ballerina Farms, but I’ll die on the hill that she is NOT a stay at home mom. She is a work from home mom, with a TON of help and resources, who runs multiple businesses and performs on the internet that she is a stay at home mom. I think we need to open up the conversation that most people really aren’t a stereotype, but that in order to fit in on the internet & niche down society at large now refuses to recognize that everyone (particularly women) can be many things and don’t need to fit into a box (I’m referring to everyday women here, not performative influencers).
@thewholehome4 күн бұрын
Yes! I 100% agree and this is one of my big commentaries on her! People are looking at her and their takeaways are what life as a stay at home mum could/should look like. In reality she’s an heiress running an empire with a ton of help. (E.g. She “homeschools” but with a full time teacher employed!) She seems to not be hiding a lot of these realities, but people see a simple stay at home mum and homesteader. When she’s running a huge farm with likely no budget boundaries and a lot of staff. 🫠 We need to be able to see it all like you said - people can be many things and the boxes need to go. “Stay at home mum” has a thousand different iterations! And I’m so glad that I can be a tiny inspiration as you make changes in your life! ❤️❤️

I would love to see videos on your wardrobe/closet. Or any house organization with kids! I am about to have our first baby and feeling very overwhelmed. lol ❤
@thewholehome4 күн бұрын
Hi! Oh I’m so sorry you’re feeling overwhelmed - but I get it. On my wardrobe, honestly it’s so simple, I don’t have a ton of clothes and I have a rail of clothes and some more folded on a shelf. In terms of house organising - I think keeping it simple is the biggest tip I can give. Babies really don’t need much at all. We bypassed a lot of the “stuff” that people recommend. I had a crib, carrier, and car seat/stroller combo and not much more. I didn’t do a change table or play gyms or anything like that. Then nappies/diapers and not too many clothes. We kept it really simple and it takes a lot of the stress out of it for me - cos there’s less to keep track of and organise. If you do find you really need other stuff, you can pick it up along the way but babies really do need very little. ❤️ Then there’s just not very much to organise, especially early on. But for what there is - developing systems and routines really helped me, like meal planning and laundry routines so it’s all pre planned and those things aren’t adding to the mental load. But I’ll try and put together some kind of video! All the best as you get closer to welcome your babe!

What are you working on at the moment?!

@ I got AGONISINGLY close to finishing a quilt for my niece’s 1st christmas, so that’s one WIP still on my sewing table. I also have the materials I want to use to make some bags for cosmetics/packing cubes/etc. I made air-dry clay hanging decorations as Christmas presents for everyone. And I got some silver clay for Christmas as a gift, and I plan to make some jewellery based on my daughter’s wonderful drawings with it. If I get on ok, I have other sentimental jewellery pieces I’d also like to make, but we’ll see! And finally, we bought a jacket for my daughter that she and I are going to use as the basis of a craft/sewing project over the coming year, which I’m really looking forward to. She has it all designed, so next steps will be getting the scrap fabrics and materials all gathered 😊 Looking forward to hearing about your own upcoming creative adventures!

You and your family are so inspirational. Please advice how you responsibility recycle or remove items of clothing that are no longer needed. Love hearing that this is an option for families. Thank you Lesley England x
@thewholehome7 күн бұрын
This is such a good question. I’d say my top option is giving them to a friend or family member locally who might need or love that item. Then selling on Vinted or at a clothing sale, or donating to a charity that’s in need of clothing to use (as opposed to a charity shop.) Beyond that, we try to repurpose pieces for patching/sewing or craft projects, and as a last resort we take things to a charity shop or we use clothing recycling. If items are wool/cotton/linen we’ll cut them up and compost them when they’re truly done. Hope that helps! x
@ziggy22558 күн бұрын
Algorithm sent me here as I’m looking at hugely reducing my consumerism. Two questions, where can I locate a list of ethical uk brands please? Secondly, I do use Vinted but I worry that with the shipping it’s not really helping the environment. But I’m torn as I’m still rehoming an unwanted item that’s already in circulation. How do I reconcile that?
@thewholehome7 күн бұрын
Such a good question and I love that you’re thinking about that! But I think we have to look at the bigger picture here. If we can rehome an item locally with friends or at a local charity in need of clothing donations, with no shipping miles then that’s amazing and my top choice - in with you there. Or if we can acquire something locally that way too I love that - local charity shops are my top choice for finding pieces. But when people are getting rid of an item, there are likely going to be some emissions related to that. If we send clothes in the trash or take them to clothing recycling then they are transported in a similar way to sending via Vinted. So it’s just trading the emissions BUT getting more use out of the item, and not purchasing a new item - two things that overall reduce emissions. If items are taken to charity shops - a good proportion of those end up being shipped overseas, so again a much greater emissions load on that item. So yes there are emissions involved with Vinted but I think they are lower than a lot of the other options. I don’t ship Vinted items to my home, I ship them to a pickup point and grab them when I’m passing anyway which does a tiny bit to reduce the footprint too! I hope that helps!

When my daughters used to do ballet their ballet teacher had a box for outgrown ballet/character shoes plus leotard and skirts etc. You’d put your child’s name on it and how much you wanted for it and if it sold the ballet teacher would pass the money on at the next lesson. My younger daughter had her sisters hand me downs and then I sold them on. When they put on a show we had to buy their outfits which were made by their ballet teachers mom to keep costs down and they’d usually be used for another show the following year so we could sell those on too. The comment you received about just passing the tshirt on to a charity shop is a very typical mindset but it’s a specific tshirt so who’d want to buy it secondhand unless they went to the same ballet school 🤷♀️ I also used eBay to source things rather than buy new (this was before Vinted) and I started making their character skirts myself. A lot of their clothes were from charity shops when they were younger and as teens they loved charity shopping for unique looks. I’m plus size and there’s never much beyond a size 16/18 but I keep looking because now and then I come across things like the cashmere jumper I found a few weeks ago x
@thewholehome7 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment - I love hearing from other people in the ballet world on how they’ve navigated things. Thank you. We do have a level of hand me downing at ballet but not enough, and there’s an expectation that we’ll have brand new clothes for a lot of things. But I’m working on doing it my own way 😜 And I know that charity shopping can be a very different ball game depending on the sizes you’re trying to buy - I love that you’re keeping going even though you find less. We definitely need more of a focus on size inclusion done well at charity shops. I know it’s dependent on what people bring in, but I still think there are things that could be done to help!
@baywillow92729 күн бұрын
The national average is £600-700 per person?! 😵💫 Absolutely mind boggling, I think we spend maybe around a hundred or less… Charity shops and small museum gift shops were my go to this year for gifts, and consumables of course. Also a few hand me downs from cousins. We only do a few gifts from Santa, and then the rest are clearly labelled from family members or friends.
@thewholehome9 күн бұрын
As in that’s how much each person spends, not the average value of the gifts for each person - but still about double our spend! And I think it’s per adult, so it would come in at 1200-1400 for our family. I guess it also depends how widely you gift. I know people who are gifting to aunts, uncles, 10+ niblings and godchildren and it all adds up. We did ~£80-100 each for our sets of parents (last year we did homemade gifts that cos £25 total including shipping to both sides so it changes year to year) no gifts to each other, ~£20 stockings for the kids but including a lot things they needed anyway like underwear, and £40 “proper” non Santa gifts for our kids which was higher than usual. Then we each did 2 £20 secret Santas within different family groups, and we did a group gift for all the cousins that came in at about £50 total. So between us, I’d say Christmas was about £500-600 total or £250-300 each and that felt like a higher year than usual.
@baywillow92729 күн бұрын
@thewholehome spend per adult makes more sense yes, even with that I think we’re 1/3 of that average. Buying new electronics for Christmas must bump up that figure a lot from what it would be without - surely £600-700 buys one a lot of stuff otherwise! But then maybe I’m just that far removed from people who gift a lot of expensive stuff… I think the most expensive item within our family was a £60 collectible leather bound book set this Christmas. Anyway, Happy New Year to you and yours!

Rice I usually just cook with water and salt but sometimes I’ll throw broth in, or a stock cube, or a spoon of marmite while it’s cooking for some more flavour.

Hi I have just found you and have loved the content I've watched so far! I am 53 and over the last few years myself and my husband decided we needed to do 'more'. We've gone from living in the city and relying on all the mod cons on offer. Online shopping - ✔ Not even considering our power / energy source and usage - ✔ The provenance of our food, hey Ocado delivers who am I to question?- ✔ Garden maintenance taking time? - No problem just lay huge amounts of artificial grass and gloat that come Winter we still look green -✔ Have I been guilty of buying new clothes without thinking and for with no event in mind but just because I 'liked them' - ✔✔ Even worse, did they languish unworn in wardrobes and not even returned? ✔ Absolutely! I allowed myself to even take the 'moral' high ground with this because I would then donate them to charity shops and so I was positively a hero for helping out right?! I admit to ALL of this with shame and a heavy heart. With our children grown and looking towards grandchildren arriving and inheriting the planet we stopped thinking about work and what made life easier for us, we stopped shaking our heads at the news or on reading the environmental impact to the world and realised change started with us. We sold the house, moved to the countryside, our 'artificial' always green garden is now 3 acres of field we have worked hard to re wild, planted many trees, grown fruit and veg with varying degrees of success! We have chickens and ducks who have the greatest of lives and give us our eggs. We have deer who visit (and sometimes destroy) and more wildlife than could be imagined. The gas guzzling cars have gone, we store solar energy in our batteries and bit by bit, day by day we are trying. The clothes however...for me that is not for the mister, has been the last thing to change. I still don't quite have my eye in on the charity shops, often finding it all just a little overwhelming and finding it hard to picture the wardrobe I have in mind. I do peruse Vinted often, but have found myself just looking at the tried and true labels I would shop from before because "well they were expensive so they must be ethical right?!" (insert huge eye roll here) So I (eventually) get to my question for you which brands do you suggest looking for? Do you have any clothing brands that you are comfortable in knowing the ethics behind and provenance of where they source? I, like most women in their 50's these days did not stop caring about style and resorting to frumpy mum wear the minute the clock struck midnight at 40 or the menopause fairy approached. So clothes that work for country living and tramping around outside all day are necessary but so is a little something to wear out for cocktails, a nice restaurant and theatre. Any advice would be hugely appreciated by both myself and the planet!
@thewholehome6 күн бұрын
Thank you for your comment - I love hearing about your world and what you're doing. Your 3 acres sound incredible, you've been able to do a lot. I think so many of us have gone through those same thought processes as we've gone on this journey: the idea that expensive must mean things are done well. But as you said, sadly so wrong. Clothes can be so hard. They're so much a part of our identity and creative expression. I'll say I know there are a lot more small brands and designers doing incredible things, and I'm not that current on the landscape as more pop up all the time. But I'm always looking for real transparency on where things are made, for natural fabrics, low impact dyes ideally, and proof of a commitment to the environment and treatment of people - third party certifications are useful too but not everything. There don't end up being many that I feel amazing about but there are some gems. Are you in the UK or the US or somewhere else? I'll make some suggestions based on that!

So appreciate this video! We are in Canada and our daughter has been struggling a lot with anxiety in school. I’ve been thinking of potentially homeschooling for a brief period (timeline TBD) in order to take the stress off her and dive into why it’s happening. Every time I think I’ve made up my mind, I falter again. Your emotional struggles with capability and capacity resonate so much. Also we have a 2 year old too and I worry for what it will do for him as well. It was a breath of fresh air to hear your honesty, as so much online content feels like people live a whole other world once they homeschool. We don’t have flex school here which makes me so sad because it sounds perfect. Wishing you all the best with the new structure!

Thanks for your comment - and I’m so sorry you’re dealing with that school struggle. We were very lucky that issues at school weren’t a part of our decision making process but I think had they been we might have landed in a different place. School decisions can be so so hard, and I we need more honest chat about homeschool because so many people have said what you’ve said. The burden of responsibility and the juggle of the weigh very heavily, we’re all different and it’s not the right or best path for everyone. I’m not ashamed to say it really wasn’t the option that was best for our family- or for me personally. I wish the flexi option was available more widely because a lot of people here are singing its praises from range of angles. I hope you find the right solution for your situation and feel peace with it. ❤️

Thank you! I couldn’t believe it was on the sale rack at a charity shop. I’ve worn it SO many times in the last 2 months I’ve owned it. 100% wool and hands down my top find in the last 2 years of no new clothes. 😍

This was very interesting. I have had a long journey dating back to the 1990’s with ethical consumerism - especially clothing, including for a while with a very minimal wardrobe made possible because I was a stay at home mum with a very casual lifestyle. I was fortunate to have bags and bags of hand me downs for the children from friends and relatives. It was just normal for us to help each other. When the children needed something new (this is well before second hand sites!), the route I went was buying the best quality I could afford and passing it down. Some of my daughter’s clothes were worn by a further three girls and still had some life left (her sister and cousins). The ballet school had a lively second hand shop as well, as the uniform changed according to the grade. It only takes a couple of parents being interested to do this and it could be done mostly online these days, then it was a table with the items and prices after class and all in cash. Now my children are grown and make their own choices, I choose to make most of my own clothes usually from second hand fabric and buy the rest second hand. It’s a great hobby and slows down the crazy fashion cycle there is now. Vinted has been amazing for shoes as I have wide feet and it was so difficult to find anything to fit in charity shops. Anyway I guess all this to say, it is possible for this to be a permanent lifestyle and if I do occasionally have to buy something new (as recently with some pyjamas due to an emergency stay in hospital), I buy something great quality and classic that will be with me until it falls apart. I hope the charity shop gods smile upon you and your family, and you continue to enjoy your journey x

Thanks for your comment - I love hearing from other people on the journey. I'm also starting to make my own clothes and in the same way, I want to do it just from repurposed fabrics. I just made a quilted jacket over the Christmas break, and I'm planning my next one! I totally agree that it slows things down, I find it very therapeutic too - it helped me actually switch off over the holidays! Thanks for the encouragement that it can be a long term way of consuming clothing - that's the goal! x

thank you for the courage to share about underwear as well as social norms/'pressures' (?) regarding being a 'correct ballet mom' 💚

Thank you! I’m very much here for sharing all those things along the way. There are a lot of ballet norms I’m learning and confronting for sure!

I’m curious to see what you mean by stockings as well. We do a single item from Santa and we pop tiny gifts wrapped into the stockings so it’s just the candy from him. We talk a lot about and celebrate St Nicholas day so they know the spirit of the giving vs consumerism. Our 9yo finally connected the bad kids get coal thing this year and I said well they used to burn coal so it was a very kind gift for most kids back then 😉

I answered this a bit more on another comment so you can see a fuller response there, but stockings have always been from us, not Santa (although we say Santa - we like the fun of it!) So I guess it’s just a shift in when we give the gifts. The stockings are little bits they need like socks and undies, pencils, etc, along with little bits I’ve found in charity shops through the year for them.

Please explain why you call those stocking gifts when they would never fit in a stocking. Ours were a few bits of ribbon candy, nuts and an orange. After all of those big presents what do you give as “presents?” Just wondering about the designations.
@thewholehome13 күн бұрын
Such a great question and we probably need more of a designation in our family! 😜 We don’t have a solid rule, but I go to charity shops through the year and pick up little bits I think they’d love, and from September I hold back pretty much everything they need and it all ends up in a stocking. My husband and I don’t do Christmas gifts for each other so the stocking gifts are all the gifts. Some years the kids have had an experience as their “main” gift so the stocking is the only un-wrappable gift. This year they got a shared second hand yoto as their main gift. I’d say we major on stocking gifts in our home and don’t do a ton of non stocking gifts. You’re right on some things not fitting, we actually pulled some of the larger ones and decided to hold them back for another moment and not gift them. They might be a gift for a friend at a later date or saved for a birthday. My husband grew up like you with some candy in a stocking, and I grew up with stockings being the main thing for us at Christmas! Our kids all know Santa is us, so maybe that makes a different there too!

Hi! Sorry for my slow reply, I've been away from my laptop over the holidays a bit more. I don't have the best answer here (especially if you're in the UK.) I'm wearing a few bits from a US based brand that then closed down this year called Beautycounter. I came to love them when we lived there, and I'm still using them! They did a winter sale so some pieces are available but I probably don't recommend shopping if you're new to them because everything is 'no return' through the sale. But I've popped the links below if you want to have a look. x Mascara: www.beautycounter.com/products/think-big-all-in-one-mascara?ref=KEZIAARBUTHNOT SPF Tinted moisturizer: www.beautycounter.com/products/dew-skin-tinted-moisturizer?_pos=1&_psq=dew&_ss=e&_v=1.0&ref=KEZIAARBUTHNOT Blush: www.beautycounter.com/products/cheeky-clean-cream-blush?ref=KEZIAARBUTHNOT&variant=45315239379111 Brow Gel: www.beautycounter.com/products/brilliant-brow-gel?variant=45309049569447
