I absolutely love this song…one of my faves from the late ‘20s…the Pennsylvanians were one of the very best dance bands.

Recorded on March 8, 1928. The song was written as the "theme" for Lon Chaney's 1928 silent movie of the same name.

The vocals are Dick Robertson. Chester Leighton seems to be a pseudonym. He has recorded another version alongside this.

Looks like a German copy of a Decca Record from England. The performer is either British or German.

On the Discogs page for the artist, it said that they were a Scottish organist who specialized in schlager.

Something I noticed is that between 3:00 and 3:03, there seems to be a stray strum of what I can only assume to be an upright bass. It's a little difficult to make out, but that is quite an interesting blunder if that's what the sound is. There also seems to be some high-pitched squealing beginning around the 2:00 mark and ending at 3:03. I believe that is due to the way the record was pressed, though I am not completely sure as to how this could've happened.

According to audio engineer Steve Hoffman, the squealing sound you're talking about is from the soft beeswax of the master blank becoming cooler, and the cutter head reacting.

Decent Instrumental, kinda enjoy the vocal oddly, never heard of Ford Britten, i have a feeling its a Pseudonym but also that its a real person.

Chester Leighton is almost definitely not a real person and not a real orchestra director, the name has been used by various band leaders during the early 20s on various Columbia Dimestore Labels, like Velvet Tone, Harmony and Clarion, some band leaders that have used the name Chester Leighton are Ben Selvin, Fred Rich, Sam Lanin and a couble others. Sam Lanin being the specific conductor of this recording date.

Given the sheer number of "Heartaches" covers, it is interesting to see how many different takes there are on the song, even if some are similar. I feel like this version is slightly more similar to the original track than the Al Bowlly cover, so it's like it's a transition state towards the Al Bowlly/Ray Noble cover.
@BlackPatti78s
@BlackPatti78s Жыл бұрын
Ray Noble was not the Orchestra Conductor on Al Bowllys Recording, but actually Sid Phillips, another famous British conductor, who's son is a successful drummer who has played with bands such as Toto, strange isn't it?
