Seeing this live changed my life. Truly one of the most incredible experiences I've ever had. Not only is this song the perfect culmination of the show's theme but it sounds so heavenly. Also that carnation gets me every single time 😫🥰

I don't care who they cast as orpheus in the future; no man will ever portray him as well as Reeve.

This song amazingly shows how much Orpheus loved Eurydice, how upset he is that he isnt being let to to rescue her, his deep sorrow and also how messed up it is in Hadestown

I wish they’d kept it like this, the OG live version is different from this, and the newest version is different again. This one is the perfect between the two 😢 Especially with Persephone’s solo

I love how, to us, hades taunting Orpheus is funny. But in the story, this is happening, and we are part of his cruelty.

Bro, when Hades begins to sing like it’s second nature but it’s so shaky and soft because he hasn’t sung it in so long…I broke Also, my personal headcanon is that Orpheus’ song was SO powerful that for a split second he bent the Fates themselves to his will!

I do miss that they chopped Persephone’s solo out BUT I think this particular verse is the best one imo. Persephone interjecting Hades to give Eurydice a word of advice the same way Hades is giving Orpheus “advice” makes sense, but rather than talk abt how much love sucked (in the first version) she talks abt how Orpheus reminded her of what true love REALLY is and hopes that Eurydice holds on to that so the two can be together. The way Persephone inspires Eurydice to believe in the hope of changing her fate directly contradicts Hades sowing doubt into Orpheus and god I really wish they kept this small verse of hers in the original ;7;

Lyrics: Hermes (spoken): And so, the poor boy asked the king Orpheus (spoken): Can we go? Hermes (spoken): And this is how he answered him Hades (spoken): I don’t know Fates: Gotta think quick Gotta save face Caught ‘tween a rock and a hard place Whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do now? If you tell him no, Oh, you’re a heartless man And you’re gonna have a martyr on your hands If you let him go, Oh, you’re a spineless fool And you’re never gonna get ‘em in line again Damned if you don’t Damned if you do Whole damn nation’s watching you Whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do now? Here’s a little tip Word to the wise Here’s a little snippet of advice: Men are fools All men are frail Give them the rope and they’ll hang themselves (Lyrics taken from Genius website)

I was alone so long I didn't even know that I was lonely Out in the cold so long I didn't even know that I was cold Turned my collar to the wind This is how it's always been All I've ever known is how to hold my own All I've ever known is how to hold my own But now I wanna hold you too You take me in your arms And suddenly there's sunlight all around me Everything bright and warm And shining like it never did before And for a moment I forget Just how dark and cold it gets All I've ever known is how to hold my own All I've ever known is how to hold my own But now I wanna hold you Now I wanna hold you Hold you close I don't wanna ever have to let you go Now I wanna hold you, hold you tight I don't wanna go back to the lonely life I don't know how or why Who am I that I should get to hold you? But when I saw you all alone against the sky It's like I'd known you all along I knew you before we met And I don't even know you yet All I know's you're someone I have always known All I know's you're someone I have always known And I don't even know you Now I wanna hold you, hold you close I don't wanna ever have to let you go Suddenly the sunlight, bright and warm Suddenly I'm holding the world in my arms Say that you'll hold me forever Say that the wind won't change on us Say that we'll stay with each other And it will always be like this I'm gonna hold you forever The wind will never change on us Long as we stay with each other Then it will always be like this

Persephone's solo is the thesis of the whole musical. She finally stops simply blocking Hades out and attempts to make him see that it's not his work that is pushing her away but his insecurity. She believes in love again and wants Eurydice (and the audience) to believe with her. This carries into her song at the very end, when she sings for Orpheus as he lives on the surface without Eurydice. She wants him to still believe in love and thank him for inspiring her.

When my husband and I met 33 years ago, we felt this way about one another-thus intense all consuming love and energy. We had three children and we had our ups and downs, mainly ups:) But he always had health issues, probably from childhood traumas, but we sailed on. However, he couldn’t battle his health any longer. In 2021 he crossed over, and while this shifted our unit, I still feel him. So the cosmic forces of our love still creates an energy field. So yes, this kind of love is real.

If not this life, perhaps the next:) That’s I believe Orpheus means when he says, I know you. My husband recognized me sooner than I did. I’ve heard this feeling compared to feeling like a person’s home.

Fuck. This may sound petty. But I really wish they weren’t allowed to clap in between any of the songs. It just disrupts the flow of the storyline and the built-up emotional vibe. It just disrupts the believability of the narrative.

Yes, for recording the surrounding sound makes less immersive, but in the stage its the other way around. The point of story is that tragedy of Orpheus repeats itself even now, even in our lives. A living story. I think reacting, live audience is very essential to the narrative. If you see other recordings, you will notice each performance they put a little twist, subtle changes as well. It's not just replay of the same story, its more of history repeating itself, so every story is same but also unique. It is the audience, who has power to break the chain of tragedy in real life, let trust and love prevails when the whole world defies it. Dead, silent audience is kills that part of the lesson, I think.

the audience is as much as part of the experience as the cast or the stage.

It’s a shame the performers can never be as good as they sound on the studio album. As I love that album. I love those songs. And yet I feel I may be disappointed if I were to ever watch a live performance. Because I can’t help it hear all of the moment they’re off key.

For me it's the way that Hades starts the musical by describing keeping Persephone like chaining her with gold and cuffing her wrists with diamonds, and using the wedding band as a prison, that he himself thought that about being married to her, and barely looking at her for approval in the things that he did for her, but to the audience, (in 'Chant') the durationof the show. And then we watch him remember the entire reason he loved her, relish moving !WITH! her rather than forcing her, and take a moment to stare at her, and then they just hold each other for awhile, in the span of 10 minutes.
