Here's my thoughts, House of Ashes: Pros: - best plot - best characters (Jason and Salim) - best arc (Jason's arc) - best antagonists (human or monsters) - best deuteragonists (Clarice, Merwin) - great reveal (the vampires are aliens) - better variety on the choices - best climax - bigger mystery/lore Cons: - repetitive settings (underground cave) - worst love triangle (should have sticked with just Eric and Rachel) - lack of game mechanic - lack of horror The Devil in Me: Pros: - heavy game mechanic - best overall cast - best settings (luxurious and bloody hotel) - better ambiance - better horror moments (poor Erin) - great dark ending (the cycle continues) - better connection to the source materials (Murder Castle, Saw and the Shinning) - unpredictable choices Cons: - lack of complexity from the characters - pointless obols (wish they didn't scrap it) - worst plot armor (looking at you Mark) - unfair consequences - bad pacing Overall: both are good in their own ways but in terms of enjoyability, HOA takes the spot. Despite the horrible love triangle arc, the rest of the story outweighs the negatives and even though it doesn't have much of a game mechanic that TDIM would have, it still managed to be a fun narrative game. It may not have the horror aspect, but the action packed moments made it more thrilling and intense as it should. TDIM isn't bad, it's still a good game and has a good setup but the main problem is that it goes way too long, especially at the beginning when they arrive at the shore and at the end once they get out of the hotel. They could have reduced the layout and perhaps it would have a much better pacing. These two titles are definitely on my top 2 for best DPA but it's very close, it could go either way. Final note: i'm not counting the bugs since my first playthrough didn't have too many bugs that would have ruined the game so fortunately, i got spared from the bug-pocalypse of TDIM first launch.

Hello :) I must admit, this is no contest for me - because imho, The Devil in Me has too many noticeable flaws in order to properly compete against House of Ashes. Granted, it also has a few things it does better (the first thing that came to mind were the finales and endings), but overall, I vastly prefer House of Ashes! But hey, let’s rank them with your categories, listen to your points and see where this goes! (Btw, I like how you didn’t know how the other one ranked the games :D) Story: While I liked HOA’s story more, I want to mention that I enjoyed TDIM’s _backstory_ more. The video secrets in TDIM were a game I wish I would have played! But yes, HOA’s story takes the cake :D Characters: Oh, this is difficult. I loved both HOA’s and TDIM’s main characters. I think I like TDIM’s main characters sliiightly more, but HOA has the benefit of a pretty cool side cast. So I guess they are equal for me :) Gameplay: I personally don’t rate glitches since they aren’t an intended part of the gaming experience, but regarding gameplay in general, I think TDIM has a little TOO much gameplay, with features that weren’t always properly used, while HOA had too much of the same stuff (combat, dialogue etc.). TDIM has the run button and some neat mechanics, but barely any QTEs, so I guess it’s equal. Horror: Well, this is easy. The Devil in Me, of course! Erin’s “Noises” chapter is the best horror sequence in any Supermassive game, imho. Sound Design: Once again, Erin’s “Noises” chapter comes to mind, but also HOA’s amazing vampire sounds. But honestly, I don’t know why the sound design should be as important to rank as categories like story and characters XD Though I have to admit that sound, music etc. was never something I paid that much attention to begin with ^^” But maybe you could combine Sound Design and Horror? Trophies: For me, it’s definitely House of Ashes because TDIM has so many collectible trophies D: These are so annoying to collect, and I’d rather collect trophies that let me see a new path of the game. Which, to be fair, TDIM also has, but HOA wins because it doesn’t have collectible trophies aside from the secrets. Btw, it only has the “head choices” trophy and no “heart choices” one, so that’s something to consider, too :) Location: I think TDIM’s hotel and island are pretty cool, but HOA wins easily for me because of the shifting in atmosphere and location. You described it perfectly, honestly: The deeper you go, the better it gets. Plus, if you call HOA repetitive for its tunnels, you should also consider TDIM’s endless hotel corridors XD TDIM does have some variation to be fair, but the areas are WAY too big imho, to the point where I’m surprised it isn’t your “walking simulator” game XD Graphics: Slight win for HOA. From the character models to the environment, I enjoyed HOA’s graphics slightly more than TDIM’s. I understand why you ranked them similarly, though - TDIM still looks great, I just think that the character models don’t look as “real” as they do in HOA. I can’t really explain it, though XD Display: Uh, do you mean the menu? Even after listening to your points, I didn’t quite understand what “Display” meant XD Similar to Sound Design, I don’t really understand why you would rank this as high as some other categories XD Choices: This is it. The MAJOR reason why I prefer HOA to TDIM. To be fair, I don’t only rank the choices themselves, but the choice system as a whole - and TDIM has A LOT of 50:50 choices, not all of them clear, only one longer-lasting butterfly effect (Complicit) and doesn’t offer much replayability for players like me, who wants to keep everybody alive. (The replayability in an “everyone survives” run is VERY important to me.) In House of Ashes, you have slightly more breathing room, but also a lot of choices that can come back later or are influenced by earlier choices: Air support, Clarice, Rachel’s infection, the UV wand, Nick entering the motherlode, the Ancient One, Eric (not) cutting the rope, Jason shooting the shepherd, the multiple injuries … plus, there’s maybe one 50:50 choice that automatically kills a character (Rachel begging Jason to shoot her), while the game always gives you a second (and sometimes even a third) chance to save them. I REALLY appreciate that, and it makes House of Ashes’s choice system my favorite overall :) There are also other categories I rank these games by: Finale/Ending (here, TDIM would win, though HOA is amazing as well), Pacing (a major win for HOA and a major loss for TDIM - the game has some serious pacing issues, unfortunately), Emotional Impact (neither of them would be THAT high tbh, but yes, both games have scenes that surprisingly touched me) and overall enjoyment (which mostly focuses on the flaws and how much they impact my experience). TLDR: The Devil in Me has things it does exceptionally well, but also enough things where it lacks severely. While House of Ashes is obviously not perfect, I think it’s flaws are much easier to forgive, especially considering how good the strengths are in comparison. Obviously just my opinion and I understand why someone might prefer TDIM and switch it with HOA in this paragraph. But I’m not surprised that the fandom overall sees HOA as the best DPA game ^^

As a DBD and Supermassive Games fan, who preordered with high expectations. I was very dissatisfied with TCOFS, I planned to do a full play through from start to finish and I got 9 Chapters in and nearly quit the game. There was almost Zero action in the play through that I got, and I was bored for way too long. This game is very clearly built with the Scene Branching in mind, but because there are so many variables it means that so many things have to be tightly knit, and there was barely any real action until the Theatre Scene. The Characters were confusing due to who was playable and the fact that they branched across timelines. I thought Stan was a main character who I’d have to play and keep alive but he died anyways, I could play Linda twice in two different timelines, I was just so disappointed with the end result because Story and Fanfare came over Gameplay I feel. The reason I finished my play through in One sitting is because of this games One Single Redeeming quality for me, that awesome fucking scene where Frank Stone comes through the Movie Screen, I was so excited, after so much mundane walking, I was thrilled, and it felt so nice to experience that dread and hype, but unfortunately this game massively let me down, and I haven’t touched it since that play though. On another note, I am very excited for Directive 8020, it looks like there will be 5 player multiplayer for Shared Story, where each player gets to be a character at the same time, unlike the Shared Story and Pass the Controller modes of the S1 games.

TDIM is significantly better in every single way. House of Ashes still being the weakest TPDA game. TDIM only has 1 plot armor character, 2 entire ending variations, exclusive chapters based on deaths, curator cut actually has exclusive content that enahnces the story, higher choices mattering opportunities, wayyy better chase scenes HoA has 3 plot armor characters, 1 ending, no exclusive chapters based on deaths or CC, Eric and Rachel are the only 2 characters where your choices matter, Forced Jason/Salim relationship that is entirely unavoidable. Storylines should be completely missable by choices and actions. -Jason/Salim always reconcile no matter how much they treat each other like shit meaning that all their choices together quite literally don't matter. -The love triangle is always concluded by Nick if Rachel/Eric are dead. -You always find out about the Alien Twist. -Salim has significant plot errors with calling the vampires "demons" until the chapter The Horror if he fails to learn of the sunlight and impale weakness. -Salim will always say Nick treated him nicely and like a friend even if Nick beats the shit out of him and ties him up -Eric and Rachel are good tho they have no real plot errors/continuity errors outside of Rachel saying she is built different and better by surviving alone (factually incorrect)

When I played TDiM shared story day 1, it was buggy, and Charlie died even though I pulled the lever as Mark. I also think there's a lot of dead-end mechanics that are only utilized once. I prefer House of Ashes because it doesn't have the "makeup" to make it seem deeper. I also love the NPCs.

I figured you would have that order of ranking, I think I would have the same order although it could shift between 1 and 3. if I’m being honest, I don’t know if i would even consider it a Life is Strange story. The new power is cool but the concept of what Life is Strange is supposed to be is not even there imo. These games tells the story of normal people having their lives changed due to supernatural events. The ending implies their lives have changed but it feels hollow. Most of them don’t appear to have changed and those who did don’t have that impact you would get from the first game. I think that’s the problem with the sequels, the fact that there isn’t a specific scene that people are talking about. Appart from 1, I haven’t heard any memorable moments from 2 or True colors. I haven’t played these games but the fact that I haven’t seen anything on KZbin that would be deemed memorable speaks for itself.

Hello :) Nice thumbnail representing the episodes! The ranking was predictable, but understandable. As you can probably guess, I really don’t understand the dislike Episode 5 got from the majority of the fandom, but I fully agree with your opinion of the other episodes :) I haven’t fully decided yet what my favorite episode is, but probably 2 or 3 for the reasons you mentioned. Currently, I’m feeling 2 a bit more, while I was feeling 3 when you made the poll. Something notable is the plot shift in Episode 3; I actually don’t mind how Episode 3 in itself handled Alderman (I enjoyed getting messages from Moses regarding his fate), it’s only the future episodes where I heavily dislike how it wasn’t build upon more. Episode 2 has by far my favorite choices, though I funnily dislike the ending of it XD It seemed way too unbelievable to me, especially because it was revealed so early. I also don’t particularly like the sequence in Moses’s office because you had to go back and forth so many times. But I did enjoy the rest of the episode, which is why I love it, too :D Thanks for sharing your ranking! Do you plan to do the Square Enix survey about Double Exposure?

For me I was happy with my ending, as someone who got both Madi and Sam to the campfire (Linda was the sacrifice, Stan had the pendant). That chase scene (the first time playing) was probably one of the most intense gaming moments I've ever played. Even if they were doomed to the loop, getting Madi and Sam out of the mansion was satisfying in and of itself. The woods scene with the flashbacks was also pretty great. And I felt like I was rewarded for having a 2024 survivor (otherwise you miss out on this). My 1980s timeline was pretty messed up though, with Jaime and Sam both dying.

I am of two minds about the ending. It's great for Dead by Daylight fans as it leads us directly to the game we know and love (the lobby campfire specifically), not to mention I loved the "circling back to Madi's vision at the start coming true" element. It's not-so-great for people who are more familiar with SuperMassive Games, those who worked hard to keep everyone alive for the best ending... only to find out there was no chance of escape, no matter what ending you get. I'm also a bit peeved that Frank Stone "The Champion" was not introduced as a formal killer in Dead by Daylight following this game's release.

It can be a bit underwhelming but it wouldn’t be the ending itself. I expected that it would end with the present cast potentially ending up in the trials and it does make a lot of sense given the tone of DBD. So it wasn’t the issue for me. I think the problem is how we got there (which I think is what you might cover next time if what i’m hearing is right), the climax was a bit of a let down. It started great with Frank coming out of the screen but then the rest is a chase, a potential conversation with Augustine, another chase and that’s it. It felt like there’s was a build up for something big but we stopped mid way and we never come back. And you could say the same thing with the 80s storyline where the climax is Sam coming to the rescue and, depending on who lives, Frank gets imprisoned inside the reel. But the last time we see them is in a vision where we see them splitting the reel so that Frank doesn’t get freed and we don’t see them again which feels unsatisfying. I used to think the game was great but looking back, i’m starting to see the flaws in this games. And the ending is one of them, it was going somewhere that could have been great but then it went downhill very quickly. It sucks that it wasn’t has good has I used to believe.

Hello :) Without knowing anything about DBD prior to playing (and honestly, not that much more _after_ playing), I was pretty satisfied with the ending! While I personally like dark endings more if there are good endings to balance them out, I thought TCOFS’s ending worked surprisingly well. Really, the only thing you can hold against it is that most choices and consequences don’t really affect the ending that much. I wonder if the majority of fans was reminded of Little Hope’s endings that made them feel like their choices were pointless? And I say that as someone who very much loves Little Hope’s endings and the way they can give Anthony different conclusions, but once again, you can definitely argue that having an ending that automatically dooms the characters one way or another is not a smart idea for a choice-based game. With that being said, I hope for more gray endings in the future, ideally endings that take your prior choices into account. I simply love if characters can survive in multiple conditions and not just meet their end in different ways ;)

Another sad thing about Josh's Wendigo ending is if there no survivors at the end of the game. The end slightly changes because there are no cops to go find Josh, he is once again all alone, no one knows where he could have gone and what happened to him. He suffers as a Wendigo all by himself just like Hannah did a year before

Spoilers can be a double-edged sword for many reasons. On one hand, people often post videos with spoiler-filled thumbnails, which ruins the experience for others who are trying to avoid spoilers. For example, I had a theory about a doppelganger and shapeshifter in Life is Strange: Double Exposure, but when I went to watch Chapter 2, I accidentally saw spoilers for Chapters 3-5 in my recommendations. This ruined a key plot point for me. On the other hand, some people buy games early to avoid spoilers, but this can sometimes lead to unintentional spoilers for others. For instance, people may share videos with spoilerish thumbnails, giving away major plot points, which can be frustrating for those who want to experience the game fresh. For those who hate spoilers, it might be worth waiting a couple of weeks after the game’s release to buy it. This allows time for the buzz to settle down and spoilers to become less prevalent. However, if you buy the game early and then post spoilers, especially in a misleading way (like using spoiler-filled thumbnails), it can make you seem hypocritical. For people who don't mind spoilers, the game's price tag may not be as big of an issue. If spoilers don’t bother you, paying the full price might be less of a concern. But if you're complaining about spending more money, then it seems contradictory when people are still willing to buy expensive collector’s editions or early access versions of games. Ultimately, it’s a balancing act. You either care about spending extra money for bonuses or you don't, and both perspectives come with their own trade-offs.

"It would be really cool if, in a key moment, Fake Max (Safiya) traps Real Max (Our Max) in a distorted version of Arcadia Bay. Everything seems normal, but something’s off. Meanwhile, Fake Max (Safiya) takes this opportunity to ruin her life and get revenge on everyone who wronged her. This triggers Real Max to break free from this warped pocket universe. She confronts Fake Max, and after defeating her, it’s revealed that Fake Max was actually Safiya all along, and she faked her own death. At this point, Real Max faces a choice: either kill Safiya or make her realize everything she did was wrong, teaching her a lesson. This moment ties back to the end of Chapter 3, where Fake Max (Safiya) touches Real Max, causing them both to fall off a cliff, ending in a fade to black. In Chapter 4, Real Max wakes up in a dorm room and finds herself back in Arcadia Bay. However, everything feels wrong-Rachel and Chloe are alive, and they’re all best friends. Mark Jefferson is still teaching at Blackwell, even though he should be dead or in prison. By the end of the episode, Real Max manages to break free from this pocket universe, surprising Fake Max (Safiya) and everyone at Caledon University. Chapter 5 opens with Max trying to prove she is the real Max and that Fake Max (Safiya) is not who she claims to be."

As much as we love her, Max isn't fitted to be some major character of a big saga of games. She was so perfect LIS 1 that it seemed impossible to explore her character more. And Double Exposure is proving the case, her arc in this game follows the same story beat by beat except this time, she already knows Safi; Safi dies, Max discover a new power, she figures out the mystery, some twist and turns happen, she finds out about her friends past, and the climax is a decision between a friend and everyone. But we don't even get an ultimatum, instead she just says no and the consequences are Safi is obsessed with her powers and the timelines merge. that's it? It feels like Max was taken off too easily on this one. And don't get me started on the storm, this makes no sense that the SAME storm from 1 only causes a few damages to trees and furnitures. We already established that the storm could kill people, but now it's different? Why, because her powers are different? Because Safi was controling the storm? I have no idea what was going on in chapter 5 even though it was an intereting take for the climax. And the last thing i'm very intrigued is, what's next for Max? Is she gonna fight Safi on some Avengers endgame finale? Max isn't supposed to some superhero, she's just a normal woman who has powers that makes her life miserable and the end of 1 implied that she would never use her powers again. Life is Strange is about normal people witnessing the impossible and how the world reacts to it, not some Marvel/DC where powerful people is common for everyone. If this is how this series will become, it would lose the charm of what people loved. Anyways, i'm on the same page, i'm not excited to what they planned in the futur, in the mean time, MERRY (late) CHRISTMAS!

Hello and happy late Christmas :D Honestly, your fake-out ending for this video already said everything that needed to be said XD No, Max Caulfield should absolutely NOT return. As someone who really loved her character in Double Exposure and think Deck Nine nailed her adult self, I don’t want her to return in a future Life is Strange game. Not as a main character, not as a side character, not as a cameo. Because by this point, everything would be disappointing: Having her as a main character yet again screams “cash-grab” and beating a dead horse; having her as a side character could maaaybe work (depending on how important she is), but would likely distract from the actual story; and having her as a cameo would feel like cheap fan-service and wouldn’t be enough for most fans, I assume. Basically: Leave Max alone! I’m not even sure if I want to see Safi and Diamond again. I liked Safi and thought she was a very interesting character, but do I really want to see more of her …? And Diamond felt like a very random addition to the super-powered humans of the Life is Strange universe. The Avengers angle is definitely NOT something I want to see, that’s for sure. So yeah, I don’t plan to buy the next Life is Strange game if that’s what we will get :-/
