I love all the little visual gags sprinkled throughout the video, like duck hunt with the chocolate, or Richter getting a pitfall when you talk about the invisible stair phenomenon. They’re all so fun, and watching you recreate the metaphors you use in game is very charming. Amazing video that does a great job unpacking the details that turn Steve into a broken mess, but I thought the little visual gags deserved a shout out, since it’s really going the extra mile.

Steve reminds me a lot of early season Happy Chaos in Guilty Gear Strive. Both are resource-heavy characters who had some portion of their moveset sacrificed on the altar of one unique mechanic (Steve's block, Happy's gun) which ended up breaking their balance due to just *how* unique it was. They broke fundamental rules of the game that everyone else had to follow (Steve changing the stage shape and using grounded abilities mid-air, Happy being able to attack with gun during endlag) and so the universal balancing measures just didn't work right for them. In addition, they had some number of other busted special moves (Steve minecart and elytra, Happy scapegoat and roll) and essentially dictated neutral with their basic gameplan (The Wall, steady aim). Add on a flatly overtuned set of normal moves, and you have the respective monstrous top tiers of Smash Ultimate and Guilty Gear Strive. Difference is, that was Happy 2 seasons ago. It took a *long* time to get him to a balanced state-"nerfed to top 1" was a common joke about his balance patches-but they got him eventually. Steve didn't *have* a long time-the patches stopped too soon to rebalance him.

Definitely not realistic to say that Steve is broken. He definitely is really strong but he is absolutely in no way meta-defining. If you look at all the top ranked players in the world only a small handful of them are Steve players, and without any exceptions, every Steve player in the top 30 has a pocket character for difficult matchups (this is in a top 30 where 50% of all reps are one main wonders). If he was “broken”, we would see that nearly all the top performers in tournaments were Steve players, yet since 2023 the ONLY Steve main to be placed in the top 10 was Acola. Idk I love the video but I definitely do think the “brokenness” of the character is massively overstated.

Honestly, my biggest issue with Steve is that he doesn't feel like a smash bros character. No, I will not elaborate/explain myself. Granted, this is coming from someone who hasn't really played Smash bros since shortly after Sora was released (due to being introduced to Blazblue and Melty Blood at around that time), so maybe take my opinion with a grain of salt

12:07 The purpose of the Condor is to control the final smash. You can control the iceberg by moving your control stick, but that has the problem of moving your character too. If you grab on you can lose control of your character until it ends so you can guide the iceberg.

In my opinion, especially for a grassroots competitive community like Smash, balance should be democratic: why are the developers who have consistently shown flagrant disregard for balance be the ones calling the shots when the community has far more resources and data than they ever could? Especially now that they've left the game in this state, it's the right and responsibility to make an unbalanced game balanced by any means necessary. If Basketball were a video game, the shot clock would never have been invented because the devs didn't add it, and people would argue you're nerfing one player for being too tall

Because that implies that the players know anything about balance at all. The fact a bunch of characters who would go on to become Major winners were left unplayed for sometimes years shows that "the community" don't really know what's good until they see it. Letting "the community" balance the game wouldn't result in a glorious utopia where every character is balanced. It would result in constant bitching that a character that was secretly already good is now being over-used, so they need nerfing. Then as soon as they're nerfed, the second-strongest character gets over-used, so they need nerfing. Then the third-strongest. Then the fourth. Not to mention a lot of the 'balance' would be completely removing the identity of the character. Removing Sonic's speed, or Rosalina's Luma, or Diddy's bananas, while technically more 'balanced' in that it's less arbitrary frustration, would make them more bland characters.

Ok what broke me was Steve intentionally knocking himself off the stage with anvil, hitting the big toss on *himself,* then using that to fly back up to the stage and KO Bowser. Like yeah. Ok. That shit will *never* happen in a real game. But is there a better representation of Steve as a character then *that?*

Imo Ultimate a mini patch: - Toggle Stage Hazards shortcut, just by pressing Y or something. It would reinvigorate some of the play on lan. - Option to reduce buffer/hold buffer to half. - More options in remapping controls - Online option to filter players by ethernet or wifi. (This option is hidden, when you plug ethernet it shows up) - Improve the online netcode as much as they can without a lot of dev time/new game. - Squad Strike Online, at least in arenas/private matches. - Add a cap to mashing, but no mash has you trapped for less time. - Using special moves does not refresh ledge invincibility. (Like when Byleth and Sora uses side B) Rebalances Steve: - reduce each type of Block HP by 3 to 5 hp. - Can only place blocks that are connected to the stage (like not mid air, just like in real MC) - Hurtboxes for blocks now match the block size - TNT can hurt him - Minecart hitbox made smaller, true to model. - Minecart is a hit grab like isabelle fishing rod. It can bounce of shield, and if steve places a block it can send it back. - minecart has 50% less armor now. - hitstun canceling removed. - up smash hitbox now matches the model. - back air has more end lag. - Wood and Diamond knockback is now nerfed. (Basically his weaker is weaker and strongest is weaker). - reduce ledge grab range on up B. - spawn and respawn with less blocks. - anvil has less knockback swap kirbys down B damage and anvil lol. - lower weight by 2. Sonic: - Revert the patch 9.0 spindash buff. Can’t infinite charge it. - Make F smash not clank with projectiles/high priority moves as much. - Add some end lag to up B. //He has to be made weaker, special moves wise so he cant time out. G&W: - Make Up B OOS frame 9 - Reduce the size of nair - Remove intangible hitbox on head during up smash/other moved. - Add more end lag to up air. - Add more end lag to down air and landing lag. - F smash less knockback //He is not very accessible to have be a top tier since his animations are hard for ppl to see. ROB: - Nerf him overall a good amount, like up air, side B, Gyro, Up B infinite, Nair end lag, etc. Snake: - Reduce hitbox size on moves that are made super huge for no reason like Nikita, dash attack, up tilt. Pyra/Mythra - Add a bit more landing lag on mythra’s aerials. - Mythra reduce knockback on some moves. Cloud: - Up B OoS is slower, 2 more frames. - More end lag on Forward air. - A tiny buff to nair’s range as a trade off. Joker: - Does not spawn with arsene meter. - reduce fair, up smash and fsmash knockback with arsene a good bit. - Make bullets in gun hitboxes smaller, especially with arsen. Diddy Kong: - reduce some of his buffs like upsmash. Kazuya: - remove some invincibility frames on moves. - Reduce knockback on a few moves. - Remove reflector on ewgf. - Reduce stun time in ewgf. Min Min: - Add some more lag and reduce range on the fist parts. - remove up smash reflector lol. Rest of the cast: - Fix “buggy” moves, polish it up. - Buff some low tiers a tiny amount and rework gannon to be based on ToTK

Steve is like a combination of Melee Fox and Brawl Meta Knight. Toxic to the moment-to-moment gameplay like MK, but has a ridiculously high skill ceiling to reach that power level like Fox.
