Never understood why literally everyone used caliber to name the gun (i.e. 76mm; 3 inch; 8,8 cm) and British use monetary units... WTF?

Any idea where/when the high speed video was taken? I didnt think we had the ability to do that around 1942, so perhaps it was shot much later post war?

I’m definitely very late, but the M4A3E2, I think has the same top speed as the regular M4A3 due to the upgraded 500 HP engine compared to the M4A2. I really dunno

It always amuses me about the lacklustre 17pdr high explosive shell when the Germans from the beginning of the war never seem to complain about any lacklustre performance of the 37mm and 50mm shells fired from their tanks

The American m1 76mm was adequate for the job against Panthers and Tiger 1s. Penetration was possible frontally from 1000 yards. 17pdr of courts outperforms the M1 76mm but there has to be concessions made to the engineering of the Sherman tank to accommodate her and that is what the Americans were avoiding because the M1 fits perfectly to the Sherman platform and that the US preferred to use the tank destroyers to counter German tanks with the larger 90mm M3 gun in the M36 Jackson and the Pershings later in the war, another powerful gun

2:55 correct me if i am wrong, but i thought 17lbs was the weight of the propellant, not the actual weight of the 76.2×583mmR shell; which was about 12~15 pounds depending on the type?(HE, AP) any anti-gun nerds more knowledgeable than me pls let me know.

The Pounds nomeclature is actually carried over from a Naval tradition regarding the weight of the shot, it is used later for logistic purposes to ensure the right Ammo is delivered to the right guns, you couldn't call the 2 pounder a 40mm because they wouldn't be happy receiving 40mm Bofors. And as for the 17 pounder being called that because the weight of the shell fired is incorrect as from the 7 projectile types only two are close to that with the rest being heavier and lighter. Again the name is important, if named 76.2mm or 3 inch there are 5 naval guns of this calibre in use at the same time called 12 and 14 pounders and 3 inch. The British called the 81mm Mortar 3 inch. And to just add trivia pounds lb. the lb means libero so why call it pound?

Good coverage of the gun. At 63, I've had the privilege to talk with veterans of this gun at length. In modern times, they look up Max range and Max penetration and put the two together, creating the modern legend is born. Legend is not a word the veterans use for it. The first group is the AT gun veterans. They considered it way too heavy for an AT gun. One of them did remark that after trying to move a Flak 18. He realised they were not badly off, and he wished the QF 17 was mounted on a turn table like the Flak gun. AT guns to survive on the battlefield required first hit, first kill reliability, not completely there in WW2. As a result, the crews never engaged targets above 500m with QF 17 APDS rounds. Instead, they would engage with 76.2mm APCBC rounds that were far more accurate at range. The Firefly crews were less keen on the gun and the tank. During Firefly's development, the US offered the larger 76.2mm gun turret, but the UK chose to use the smaller 75mm gun turret. This had a number of consequences, two of which you mentioned above. The other the crews really hated. When firing the QF 17 APDS round, the breach would over-pressure, and a flame would briefly fill the turret. So, turret crews lacked facial hair, including eye browses, as a result their were easily picked out in a crowd. Their final complaint was lacking the hull MG. They engaged far more infantry than armour. So they would gladly lose the extra rounds for the MG. So, in many ways, they considered the Firefly more of a tank destroyer than a universal tank. Unfortunately, the AC4 Senital never went into production, but I would have loved to have seen a development vehicle firing. We knew the AC2 would need to be re-engineered to cope with the recoil of QF 17. The problem was we had nothing that had the recoil. To get it, we heavily modified a turret to take twin QF 25s that fired simultaneously to achieve it. Thus, from this vehicle, the AC4 was born. What I've stated here are primary source veterans. These opinions can very easily differ, but I had access to those living in Australia. However, they were universally negative about the gun.

Absolutely top script writing! But also illustrates how successful evolution of the entire chain of elements is so interdependent, research, manufacture, logistics, training, strategy, tactics... Meanwhile the enemy is doing the same. Speed around the development cycle is the winner. Runner-up gets a shallow grave. I think we're about to rediscover that reality, courtesy of Emperor Trump & Vlad The Delusional.

Fyi: 3 inch gun, 76mm cannon, 17 pounder are all 76mm. Its just the pressure and velocity that makes 17 pounder better than 76mm than 3 inch

Also US guns 75mm, 76mm and 3 inch had same caliber. But different lengths and sizes of propellant case. So to limit confusion with logistics the gave marked those guns that way.
