Speaking belonging to multiple categories, I sometimes fall back to easy personal favourites, I identify as a passionate (pseudo profesional, so close to professional) hobbyist and I want to have the skills comprable to that of an aspirational professional, meaning doing performances and stuff tho not necessarily for money. Maybe like as a part of an orchestra club.

I'm in my late 40s and just started learning to play piano in late November 2023. I'm a Motivated Hobbyist. Thank you for this video! I have been using an instructional book for adult beginners, KZbin videos, and trying to practice at least a little while every day. There were a few weeks I didn't due to a vacation and due to exhaustion caused by work stress. I have branched out to other easy beginners pieces outside of the instructional book because I found myself getting a bit bored. Now I feel like I can get back to the books, which I'm almost done with part 1 of 2 of the 2 beginner's books. All the piano teachers locally only have time slots available for kids after school or for retired adults...thus why I'm using books and videos. So I've been trying to find videos with realistic progress ideals for beginners to gauge my progress. The last few months I have been recording audio of my progress and to hear how it sounds more objectively. I found another channel, finally, with a woman like me who started playing in her 40s who also works. She's had actual piano lessons; and I feel like compared to her, I'm making good progress. Every other progress video I've found seemed to be made by musical prodigies. That is cool for them, but was making me feel like I was lagging behind. So thank you to you as well for giving the truth about how long it takes to learn piano. I have subscribed to your channel. 🙂

When I saw that you made a new video on rhythm, I clicked right away. You are one of the few piano teachers that doesn't have confusing explanations. The really good thing is that this if for counting rhythms in slightly more advanced techniques, which is perfect for me. I'm using the John Thompson Method Book volume 2, and my two years of practicing are starting to make sense, finally. And I'm finally making progress. I have two piano teachers live, and use these videos to complement their techniques. Several times they've asked me where I've learned something, and they are impressed with your channel. I've shared the concert of your teacher, Could you put the link of his celebration of Black composers, please? That might be nice to have his reference as your teacher since there is a wonderful history of pedagogy in piano. Who taught him?

I came to watch this as a refresher. I started learning music theory in 2021 and did a crash course (Grade 1 to 5 in eight weeks - achieving distinction) to prepare me for a music degree. Sadly, the degree was contemporary and so music theory pretty much went out of the window, certainly in terms of notation. I felt more musically illiterate after the degree than I did before it so I thought I'd use this as a base and I'm glad to say that my major weakness is identifying the flat key signatures as fast as you, but for everything else I was either on your pace or even quicker 🙂 I think this is an amazing video and had it come out almost four years ago when I started playing the piano, I'm sure I would have made some progress quicker 🙂 Thanks for what you do. Very much appreciated.
