Love both my G90 & X6100. FYI… QRP is 5w or less….10w would be LP. At 5w operating FT8 I’ve had many DXCC QSOs and numerous DXCC QSOs with 10w Phone on 40m through 10m for both power level. Xiegu offers QRP/LP radios that are hard to beat for the money. W6ZD

Thank you for the video. I'm considering either the JPC-12 or the MC-750 to compare to my homebrew vertical. I'm curious tho, and may have missed it, what are you running for output power? 100watts? 20w, 5w? You had some nice signal reports👍🏼

Tim, I'm considering the Xiegu X6100 as a portable HF radio to take when we drive from Fort Myers to Alaska and back next year. I will have a 10 W HT on a mag mount ant to work the repeaters as we travel thru populated areas. My main use for the HF radio would be calling for help when we are out of cell phone range. Hopefully I could raise someone who could relay a message or do a phone patch with whomever I need to tell about my plight. I was thinking I'd want 100 W for that duty, but I don't want to hit other continents, just someone in Anchorage, Calgary or Seattle. Being birders, I will also do some POTA work when we stop in a park to look for birds. Is it silly to use a QRP rig for safety? Does that radio perform well re filters and other internal capability? Thanks! KQ4WRS Carey

what antenna do you use?
@Overlanding4Fun2 ай бұрын
I have a handful of antennas that I use for portable operations. I was most likely using the Chellegence JPC12 in this video. It is an easy to deploy ground mounted vertical that i can pack in my luggage for flights. I have another YT channel that is more amateur radio focused if you are interested, youtube.com/@graymanpota.

I've now used that antenna for the last 80-90 POTA activations with NO issue whatsoever. It's worked great. I also use the tripod and not the ground stake. However, I did replace the counterpoise wires with the Comet CGW-560 HF Antenna Ground Wire Kit. It's MUCH sturdier and better made. You just need a washer for the ring terminal as it's sized for an SO-239 connector.

I have a 2024 Bronco Sport Badlands with the 2.0L engine. I live in the city, and I prefer eco mode because the gas pedal is a bit less sensitive for a smoother take off from frequent stops. I think the only other benefit is when the a/c is running it limits how much the compressor is used. Even in eco mode, it still downshifts quickly when needed. Of course, I disable the auto stop/start feature which is maddening in city driving.

Nice video ! You surely didn't carry all that equipment in a backpack. 😉Somehow it feels to me the tripod's footprint is a little short/small to provide a stable support for the antenna (for instance when it is windy)? Do you agree?
@Overlanding4Fun3 ай бұрын
I have used that tripod several times without fail, but I will admit that there are a couple of better tripod options that have a wider base and are lighter. The one from REZ Antennas comes to mind. I have ordered the ss Moto and the provided 5’ whip. I would have liked to see a close-up view of the stainless steel and how it’s mounted onto the stake and the antenna. I haven’t figured out if the Alpha whip is telescopic, it will have to fit in the parcel to be posted. I operate from the back of the hatchback sitting in a folding chair, I love your tray arrangement on the swing out back gate.

I find I get about the same with both. Sometimes eco is better, sometimes normal is. What I find makes quite an impact is whether you are driving with, or against the wind. The bronco is a brick driving down the hiway and if the wind is against, then the milage really goes down.

I got four lights each is 650 watts? Any solutions for that ?
@Overlanding4Fun7 ай бұрын
Good question. 650 watts is going to be between 46 and 54 amps per light on a 12 to 14 volt system. That would exceed the 30 amp rating for the largest switch in the Bronco. Most likely there will be a relay that would draw power direct from the battery and then a low current circuit to a switch that could activate the relay.
@aziztabbara66887 ай бұрын
@@Overlanding4Fun so how do I install them ? Would you recommend hocking them directly to the battery with a separate switch for each

What radials would be an upgrade? I just bought this antenna.
@Overlanding4Fun7 ай бұрын
The included radials will work, but you need to split them apart into individual lines to get the best performance. I ended up making my own set(s) of radials to have with me that seem to be easier to store and deploy. The BNTECHGO wire seems to be popular in the community and several people are using it for antenna making using it for both the radiating element and for radials. Most people are using between 20 (small) and 26 (smaller) AWG wire. Electrically, the size doesn't matter for portable operations, both will support up to 100 watts or power without any issues. For the radials, there are many schools of thoughts on how much wire should I use. I stick with at least 1/4 wave length of wire on the ground for the radials to match the radiating element length. The standard rule of thumb is more is better, but you need to balance that with time, weight and, money when it comes to portable operations. I run the KISS doctrine for portable operations, keep it simple. I want to focus my time on making contacts and spend less time futzing with equipment, so good enough is my montra in the field. If your SWR is under 2:1 and your noise floor is manageable, start calling CQ. For you fixed home station, take the time to squeeze every bit of performance out of it. So with all of that out of the way, I cut (8) 5 meter lengths of 20 AWG wire (geni.us/BNTECHGO20) and then bundled them in to groups of 4 wires and connected them together with a yellow ring terminal (geni.us/ringterminals). Make sure you use a ring size the fits between over the threads of the spike and connect the spike to the feed point. I use a set of winders from ETSY (creatoriq.cc/4bb3GHc) that a ham makes that I really like. With 2 sets of 4 radials, that gives me 80 meters of wire on the ground that has worked great for me. In reality, because of the KISS doctrine, I normally only deploy 1 bundle, but I have the second as a spare or if the noise floor is a bit high, I will deploy a second bundle to try to reduce the noise floor. I hope this helps. If you are interested, I also have a ham radio dedicated channel that can be found at youtube.com/@graymanpota.

Why didn't they just put a 30amp fuse in the second switch? It's the same gauge of wire as switch #1

Hi Tim from New Zealand. what logging software do you run.? I have a touch screen ready to load up. Just got a X6100 to unpack also. thanks David
@Overlanding4Fun8 ай бұрын
Hey David. I bounce between HAMRS and N3FJP, but I have been playing around with SWLog. HAMRS provides the best interface for portable logging, but does not interface with the radio. I run N3FJP for digital modes since it interfaces with the radio. In the shack I run N3FJP. It is one you pay for, but it was, at the time, $50 USD for a lifetime of updates. Plus he has a module for just about every contest and event in amateur radio. If you are interested, I have spun the radio content out to a separate channel youtube.com/@graymanpota
