The long term plan was to remove the individual apps though, even though Gigapixel is the only one staying for now anyway as the others have been "Sunsetted". Hi Kieran, good review. I have both the 180-600 and the 100-400S both of which are great lenses. Your point about size & weight rings true with me and partly because of that I took the 100-400 (w 1.4TC) to Panama this spring instead of the 180-600. The other reason is that I use focus memory / recall all the time with birds and there is no way to set it on that lens or Z7 II. I got a Z8 after I came back because of the "bird mode" and the ability to set focus memory on a button & recall with the LF2's on the 180-600 barrel. Having said all of that, I still think that it will stay home for my upcoming spring trip back to Costa Rica. While I really like the internal zoom as compared to the 100-400, the size & weight are just too much for me at 77 even with the fairly large wheeled carryon camera bag that I have. Around home & travelling in the truck it's great however its weight is still a factor hiking around with it over my shoulder on monopod & Wimberley gimbal.
@kieranhayesphotography5 күн бұрын
Hi Gordon, I can imagine the 100-400 is a dream to use size wise compared to the 180-600 alright. I love the lens if only I could teleport it to the shoots :-) Nikon are talking about sending out the 100-400 to me in a few weeks for review so i am seriously looking forward to that now. How are you finding it works with the 1.4 teleconverter? Loads of people are saying its a very good combo.
@gordonmcintosh31595 күн бұрын
@@kieranhayesphotography I think you will really like the 100-400. The other difference between the two that you will find is the positioning and the lack of smoothness in the tripod collar on the 180-600. The lens is so front heavy that the adjustment knob needs to be loosened a fair bit to rotate which makes it feel clunky or sloppy compared to the 100-400. While one can replace it, I like the lugs that I can attach my safety strap too incase something tries to break lose while I have it over my shoulder. The 100-400 w 1.4TC is great on the Z7 II and I expect it to be even better on the Z8. Since I normally crop my shots a bit I have not noticed any significant edge softness. Keep up the good work & I'll look forward to your upcoming 100-400 review.

Sorry, can you explain what was happening with the Micro SD card. Does the camera initially write to the MicroSD, and then transfer to the large SD? What if I only have the large SD card in?
@kieranhayesphotography7 күн бұрын
Hi, No problem at all explaining it. When you have the camera set to backup so it records photos to both cards, the slowest card will generally be the Micro SD. If you only have an SD card installed and it's a fast card with 250mbs or 300mbs write speed it will be really quick transferring the photos and you won't have to wait for the 20 seconds to transfer the photos. So a fast SD card will solve the problem. The reason for the long delay is also down to shooting 14fps for 7 seconds which is approx 98 shots. That's an extreme amount of photos in a short time.

I was doing a similar comparison yesterday. DXO pure raw 2 was much better than photo AI for RAW Denoise. Like you I got soft areas with photo AI on automatic Denoise. Dialling back strength and then increasing recover original detail helped. But it’s still nowhere near as good as the pure raw automatic results. And photo AI is painfully slow by comparison. I like photo AI for recovering missed focus or motion blur - but I plan to do all the Denoise and global lens sharpening in pre raw first.

This summer, I borrowed a Nikon Zf for two weeks through an NPS loan program during a trip to Texas. I was incredibly excited about this camera, so much so that I almost bought one and canceled the loan! Initially, I dismissed reviews criticizing the Zf’s ergonomics, assuming they wouldn’t be a big deal for me. But I was surprised by how uncomfortable I found it to use. My go-to lenses are the Plena, 24-70mm, and 70-200mm, so they are are larger, and they didn’t pair well with the Zf’s design. I also expected to love the camera’s analog dials, but I never used them. While they look fantastic, they’re more suited to a slower, deliberate workflow, which doesn’t match my shooting style. Another unexpected drawback was adjusting to the traditional shutter. After becoming accustomed to the silent shutter on my Z8, the Zf’s mechanical shutter felt like a step backward. The Zf is undeniably beautiful, and I really wanted to connect with it, but ultimately, it didn’t suit my needs. It is so beautiful though!
@kieranhayesphotography9 күн бұрын
Hi Michael I could agree more about the ergonomics, I could see it was going to be a pain to hand hold especially with long lenses like you I shoot with a lot of heavier lenses and the design just failed there. I ordered a grip for the review and it worked out an awful lot better. It's no Z8 grip but it was so much better and cost less than $30. Like you I never used the dial but damn it are they beautiful to look at. Unlike you I much prefer the slap of a shutter but then again it all depends on the work you are doing. For me that was my favourite part 😂 Crazy how we all differ and have different styles isn't it? All in all it's a gorgeous camera and I think I will regret not buying it in a few years. I just spent a nice bit of money on a new lens that arrived today so that's easing the pain of returning the ZF 😂 Just not helping my bank balance 😂😂😂
@Slave-Of-Christ8 күн бұрын
I recently did a full day shooting an event with just the Zf. I knew even before I ordered it I would need a grip, so I got the SmallRig. I have bigger hands. Also definitely needed a grip for my X-T4. Anyway, I was adapting F-mount Tamrons almost exclusively: 15-30/2.8, 24-70/2.8, and 70-200/2.8, none of them small or light, plus using the FTZ adapter. I was surprised by how well it worked. I had no trouble shooting that way at all. Even with the 70-200, which I had attached more than any other lens, I could hold it in my hand very easily without any discomfort to speak of, and often just held it to my side when not shooting, rather than even bother putting it on my shoulder using the strap. I usually wrap the strap around my wrist for safety, but that doesn't take any of the weight at all. As for the dials, I really love them. I like being able to look down and see the settings on the dials rather than a screen. It's just straightforward. I loved it on the X-T4, and now my ZF. It's the Z8 that I have to get used to. I made myself shoot it last Sunday at a ceremony, and it's not a smooth experience just yet, though it's certainly down to more than simply not having the analog style dials. Love being back to full frame, and Nikon.

As a Nikon user, D3S, D750, D850, I have had a love/ hate relationship with this brand. The negatives- Snapbridge has always been a hit / miss with the D850. The live view is atrocious for magnified views for critical focusing And of course, the focus points not covering the edges thus making framing an issue for framing moving objects. And finally, Nikon has abandoned their Tilt shifts ( which I use extensively for architectural shots. I am looking at Fujifilm GFX but I’m torn between going with the Z8 or moving over to medium format and using Fujifilm’s new GFX50sii with their new tilt shift lenses. I lost faith in Nikon. And to note. I use a professional video camera (Canon C70) for my vide work. Hybrid cameras have their limitations by the very nature of being a hybrid.

I agree with nearly everything you said there especially about Snap bridge I gave up on that years ago. It works sometimes and not others and it just bugged the hell out of me. I have a few friends that use Fuji medium formatt and they really like it. Before I bought the Z8 I was very tempted to swap over to their system also but I am honestly glad I didn't now. I really like the Z8 and it suits me down to the ground. Of course with anything that's a hybrid there are going to be corners that are cut and the Z8 is certainly no C70 by a long shot. But it does the job for me thankfully. The tilt shift lenses are missed and there seems to be no option for the future with them. I can certainly see the attraction of medium formatt and whatever you decide on good luck with it. It's going to be a sizeable investment whichever way you go.

I have the Z8 and I'm looking for an extra travel camera, something lighter but still capable. I prefer Nikon (to Ricoh or Fuji) since I have tons of Z lenses (FX). I have been waiting for an updated Z 50 ii, which just recently was published. Nice little thing. Would fit the bill. But then I must spend some cash to build a line of DX lenses as well. At least two to begin with. That brings me closer in total price to the Zf, which is a much more capable FF camera and wonderful piece of art. I would love to have one, but then again it is not that small, not as handy to carry around and not as ergonomically good. However, I believe it will stand the test of time better than other cameras because of its retro classic design. What do you think? Thank's for great review 😊

I am in nearly the same situation as you, the ZF just today went back to Nikon today and it hurt a little bit to let it go. It really is a thing of beauty and wow can it capture photographs even in very challenging conditions. For me the ZF is a prettier, smaller and cuter Z8 with a lower res sensor but all the brains. I am sorry to say but if I were you I would be preparing myself to spend a bit of money. I would buy the ZF myself but I only just got a new lens from my Nikon dealer today and it cost me more than the ZF so I will have to wait a few months before considering buying that camera. I also have the Z7ii for more out and about stuff and it does the job perfectly. I am not sure if that helps but I hope it does a bit.

@ Thank you so much. I was afraid of an answer like that :) I am sure a Zf will not disappoint. Thank's again for your reviews. Love them, with lots of humor. Wish you a great weekend. :)

@photograficalex sorry but you will love it 😉 Half the time I am laughing at myself when I record the videos, usually because it's my second time saying that but and the first time around I made a mess of it. I am not sure if I am laughing at the mistake or it's a laugh of relief. It's always good to laugh at yourself though. Have a great weekend you too 👍

This is most definitely my next flash. Neewer's ecosystem has come a long way and they have a solid lineup.

Enjoy it, it's an amazing flash. They sure have come on a n lot in the last two years. I am going to be doing a review of the Q200 soon and it again is a great strobe.

I had a black FE & my brother had a black FE2 back in the day. So (provided the sensor output looks good) it's the camera for me. Used prices are too high for me currently - (above £1600+ currently), but I'll get one when used prices hit about £1200 (another year to 18 months maybe?) Who knows, maybe the Zf eye-AF will actually work - unlike on the Z6 I bought and then sold again last year.

Oh you will love this camera then... I literally just had it collected there now and it's on its way back to Nikon now but it seriously impressed me and I am seriously considering buying it. Even though I don't need yet another camera 😂 The output is great, the colours are really nice and boy is it a serious step up from the Z6. Same AF performance as my Z8, literally no difference there. Really loved using it and I am sure you will too. Fingers crossed you can get one soon.

zero grip and 4-2-0 on video ( no "normal" dual slod sd. not bad, but not perfect
@kieranhayesphotography9 күн бұрын
I would say no 4.2.2 is a slight bit of an issue but the grip and the micro SD aren't an issue really. You can get a good grip for less than $30 and micro SD cards are very capable now, I have a section on both of those points in the video. I would think personally the rolling shutter would be more of an issue than any of them but then again it's using a Z6iii sensor so that was always going to be the case. All in all it's an amazing camera though and I would be very happy to have it in my gear bag.

I bought my Z9 before the Z8 came out and never looked back. I came from a D850 with a battery grip and the Z9 felt like a great transition and the mirrorless system blew me away. I have used a Z8 (friend’s camera) and there are so many reasons I wish I would have waited a few more months before buying the Z9. But Nikon’s push for firmware updates have been phenomenal! Just my Z9 firmware updates have been like getting two new cameras since I’ve bought it. Your review is fantastic for people who are considering this camera. Another great video!

Hi Patrick, the Z9 as you rightly say is one amazing camera and the Nikon updates have been truly incredible. I think most companies would have released only one update and probably then released a "new" model. Fair play to Nikon though they are really giving us incredible value with these cameras. The Z8 has been a joy to use for me personally and I never ever thought I would find a camera to replace my beloved D850 in my heart but the Z8 has. They are truly amazing cameras and funnily enough I was testing the ZF, that's my last uploaded video and it's very similar to the Z8. Thanks again for the nice feedback and for watching the video. Enjoy the Z9 it's a truly wonderful camera.

Thanks a lot, I have a few more videos coming on the ZF over the next few weeks they are all small variants of the info here in the last two videos but they might be a bit helpful hopefully. Sadly the weather was shocking here and I didn't get time to take more photos that I was allowed to share.

This gimbal has a big cons, its not possible to balance it right with a quick release plate like the Ulanzi quick release with a camera cage, the vertical bridge its too short. So, we need to remove the entire plate to remove the camera from it, thats really bad.
@kieranhayesphotography10 күн бұрын
Have you tried using the balancing weights I mention at 29:39 in the video, that will help off set the off centre weight then. It all depends on your camera and it's size also. I am not saying it will definitely work but I have used it for heavier longer lenses and it did the trick. I hope that helps a bit.

7:16 of the video. I have set my FN2 button as you suggested but I am unclear on how to then select the Pinpoint, etc etc. I can use FN2 and the wheel to change from manual to Single and continuous and them I am lost. What have I missed

@kieranhayesphotography10 күн бұрын
Hi, the good news is you have it all set correctly and when you press the Fn2 button and turn the thumbwheel on the back it will as you say swap from M to AFS to AFC. To change the AF detection mode use the front wheel then... I was just typing this when I saw your reply saying you already had it figured out :-) Enjoy the Z8 it's an amazing camera.
