My favorite part of this movie is they allowed the villains to be funny too. They're sometimes funnier then the leads. Everyone gets moments to be funny. Jefe and El Guapo in particular are scene stealers.

The "PLETHORA!" scenes Joe showed alone show that. El Guapo's actor (who's also a Mexican director if I'm not mistaken) is a funny guy (am I confusing him or wasn't he also the Colombian jungle bandit chief in "Romancing the Stone"?).

I watched this once a week in college in the early 90s. What I liked was when the bandidos first show up in town, and the Amigos remark among themselves how stereotypical they are, which is very meta, and then they break that with El Guapo having a photography hobby, being vulnerable about his age with Jefe, and truly being touched about getting a sweater for his birthday, even automatically wrapping it around his neck.

This film is a perfect example of all you really need for a good comedy. Good comedy writers and good comedic actors. You don't need a lot of money, extensive sets, effects.... Good writing well delivered. Martin, Short and Chase. No offense to Landis, but with that team, I am fairly certain his job was to make sure the cameras were in the right place and running.

"Three Amigos is one of the most original comedies of the 1980s." Based on a well-known American film from the 1960s, which was based on a well-known Japanese film from the 1950s.

I mean, it's much farther from the original concept than "Seven Samurai" and "The Magnificent Seven" are to each other. The number of main heroes is different and there's the whole "fake hero" thing that changes the whole dynamic. If anything the Amigos films in universe seem to be way more like Magnificent Seven than "Three Amigos" is. And then we have stuff like "A Bug's Life" which is kinda "Three Amigos" via going back a bit more back to "Seven Samurai"/"The Magnificent Seven".

I grew up loving this movie, my family and I wore the VHS tape out from so many viewings. And while seeing all this deleted material would be cool, it was good to cut them. We get that the Amigos are rich and famous actors, we don't need to SEE so many scenes of them being rich and famous. And while the Miss Rene subplot sounds fun, cutting her completely just simplifies things. It'd feel WAY too bloated if the Amigos reach Mexico at 40min, compared to the final film's 20-min mark!

How I was teased for liking this movie when it came out, I think it went over most people's heads. It was te era of raunchy Eddie Murphy, where things would culminate in Andrew 'Dice' Clay and eventually subside back to more slap stick with the Naked Gun trilogy. There is a little known show called Vids with this hilarious Welsh guy who would give very long, verbally acrobatic descriptions on movies, there was one point where he says something like ''...back when you got stoned one Sunday afternoon and came away thinking The Three Amigos was a good movie...'', I hadn't even ever smoked a joint at the time it was released, but I do admit it helped on re-watching it a few years later....Some very clever scenes though that don't get enough credit....the shooting the singing swordsman still sits with me, and the 'I'll come back one day!',' Why?' at the end is just classic Steve Martin. Anyone seen Lonely Guy? Underrated movie.
