Meh. When someone says "comic book movie" they mean traditional superhero adaptations. Not something that just happened to be based on a comic. The stigma was against superheros, not comics as a medium (or something to mine for adaptations). Nobody was thinking of The Crow or even Blade as "comic book movies" because they didn't fit that mold. Often they were based on non-Big Two titles that weren't as well known. As far as most people were concerned TMNT was a cartoon, not the indie comic they'd never heard of. So there were really two: Superman and Batman. Even though both were hugely successful, it was seen as something very difficult to make work in live-action. Hence the other really unsuccessful ones that tend to be forgotten or remembered only for their infamy like the Dolph Lundgren version of The Punisher. Almost nobody was attempting them, or they'd been stuck in development hell for a long time. Spider-Man and X-Men were the first major, mainstream films based on well-known, Big Two superheroes since Batman a decade earlier.
@maxwellcorben32612 ай бұрын
With all due respect to hats off, I don’t think he really understands the statement being made and the reputation of comic book movies at the time the first X-Men was released. Yes, other comic movies had been made but the first X-Men movie and the Blade franchise were really the first step in making comic book movies as popular as they are today. Also half of the movies he put on screen the general audience didn’t even know were based on comics.
@kamdan20112 ай бұрын
@ It’s still an ignorant statement to act like Bryan Singer was the originator of this genre. X-Men wasn’t at all spearheaded by him. It had been in development for many years before it finally got made. Even back then it seemed to be more inspired by The Matrix than the comics it was based on.

In the words of another Fred Gwynne character, "sometimes, dead is better." When a production's iconographic value is rooted not in an original text that can be reinterpreted, but a particular set of performances made for the original project, I think there comes a time when you have to let the brand go, and avoid mention of it entirely, or forgo adapting it in the first place. Anyone trying to revive The Munsters is basically being sent into a no-mans-land where there isn't really anyway to win, short of the lightning-in-a-bottle moment had with the "Here Come the Munsters" film.
@grannyweatherwax80052 ай бұрын
Maybe it might work if, instead of recreating the Munsters specific family, what if they tried to recreate the original theme of the show with a different family set of monsters. The original show was a somewhat blue collar family just trying to live their lives, while also being a metaphor for judging people by how they look or their lifestyles. So do that with a Modern Family type group, or The Middle maybe, but they're all monsters. Skip recreating Herman and Lily and the gang.

Successful tv series need to connect with the majority of watchers and I think that wasn’t the case with the ending of this pilot. The monster image is symbolism for being perceived as an outsider by society, but at the heart of the character there is something very relatable and the same between "us" and "them". That’s the connection that has to be there and that’s where it becomes a hit. The original Munster series nailed that element very well. I think Hollywood needs to re-write this and try again, because it has all the potential of a great hit - a family from the old country… weave in some Eastern European (Transylvanian or Ukrainian) cultural elements, and then portray their journey of assimilating into modern day suburbia America… add a little relatable humor, maybe some family values and it would probably be a hit tv show. I would watch that and I think many other people would also.

I remember watching the Munsters Today (and Hi Honey I’m Home- that was a wierd show I haven’t see anyone really talk about- basically Pleasantville) at my grandmother’s house on Friday nights. That was my first experience of the Munsters… even at 9 I wasn’t impressed. I’m very glad that I eventually watched the original show and got that bad taste washed out of my mouth. Also, is it just me or do all single camera shows from the 2000s era all have this clean, sharp kind of uncanny look to them. This show and Desperate Housewives look kind of surreal uncluttered look- mostly in the backgrounds. I guess since it’s all a soundstage it already has a kind of liminal look to it.

Would love to see more on Fuller's work before this. PUD, DLM and Wonderfalls are all so good

It feels like it's missing a guy with a whip to be an antagonist to the family... Grandpa just does not work as a killer which is probably the first big flaw.

I'm always pretty happy to see Jerry O'Connell in anything these days... seems like post-Stand By Me he's just kind of drifted around between projects without ever finding that "one role." Which makes me sorrier the pilot wasn't picked up (yes it had kinks to work out tonally but so don't most shows in their first seasons).

4:50 Singer was also very infamously trashing the source material of his “comic book movies.”

Bryan Singer was there, so they at least got one monster right. I can only imagine the painstaking process of finding the right child to nail the Eddie role.

I actually enjoyed this pilot!

Barry Sonnenfeld is a big fan of Charles Addams, and said that he used the original cartoons as his guide. He didn't want to make a movie version of the sitcom which he didn't really like. Addams' wry sensibility suits modern comedy very well. Maybe the biggest influence of the sitcom, though I don't know if it came from the sitcom, is emphasizing that the Addams are a really loving and supportive family.

I remember watching this when it aired. The only thing about it that stoked me is that we finally got a detailed look at Spot!

Could never remember the name of this show! Watched the episode around the time it came out

12:45 The show may have done better if it was only "loosely inspired" by the Munsters and wasn't trying to be a reimagining or anything else related to the original.🤷🏽♀️

At some point I think od rhe Munsters as working class vs the Addams Family as the idle eccentric rich.

Bryan Fuller really had a knack for creating show concepts so creative they kind of couldn't sustain their imaginativeness for longer than one or two seasons. Or a pilot, as the case may be.

I think this was at least an attempt at being respectful to the original, unlike the rob zombie ones. That felt like a paint by numbers one. I'd take creativity like this over that.

A very, very weird attempt, but really I think it’s an admirable one! I wish we had more bizarre, risky remakes, no matter if it fails.

Plutotv has been showing The Munsters a lot this month. But ive yet to see my favorite. The golf episode. Theyll never do The Munsters justice because you cannot match Gwynne.

Frankly, I quite enjoyed it. I appreciated that they viewed it as inspired by rather than a remake of the original.

I’m not a Munsters fan at all (I know about it mostly from these videos) but everything I’ve heard about this version just makes me wonder why it was a Munsters show to begin with. It feels like it takes way more from general horror rather than the show itself.
