I am replacing the water pump on my 225 hp Yamaha two-stroke. I noticed that when I spin the driveshaft by hand I can feel/hear the gears meshing together. Is this normal? I guess I was expecting it to be smooth like the prop shaft

Excellent video, thanks. Question...I have shift ok into forward/reverse/neutral, but I do have binding sometimes to where I have to very slightly rotate the prop as you indicate in your video. I assume this is normal behavior and nothing to be concerned about?

I purchased your Bubble Purge G2 Hydraulic Steering Bleed and Purge Kit part # OST-PBB.001. Your instructional video was on spot!! I was able to purge the air out of my system and add the fluid all by myself. Took me around 20 minutes. I couldn't believe it was as simple as you showed in your video. This was a top quality product made with exceptional parts. It was shipped the same day and I had it a couple days later. Thank you so much!!

Whoa! This is awesome. So detailed and comprehensive. Since I am new to boating and outboard motors, I lack confidence in tackling this type of task. I also watched your Suzuki 150 work and so great. I also watched others for the same task and just fail so bad in comparison. Your videos explain the logic of the hydraulic/fluid travel between the cylinders and reservoir by watching closely the trim and tilt rods extension and contraction. Excellent video I have the exact 2012 Yamaha F250 and never been serviced or opened up. It has hesitation and I recognized now that I am compressing a pocket of trapped air. No apparent leakage or wetness, and not sure how the air got in. Has to be the age? Regardless, at the moment, I will just do the bleeding and see if seal replacements will be needed. I already purchased the tools you identified just in case. Thank you so much for your videos, and now I have the confidence to do this task and avoid the costly repair by Service Providers.

Hi, grate video, i have changed the outer lip seal and put i back together as you descibed in the video, but now i can lift up the motor when it is the down posisjon, is there air in the system or did i do something wrong during assembeling? What is the correct bleading prosedure? Thanks from Norway

If one of the ball bearings slipped out of position during assembly it can cause the problem you describe. Trapped air in the cylinder can also cause similar problem. I would check fluid levels, add fluid if necessary. Once you have verified that the unit has sufficient fluid, test again. If the problem continues, I would disassemble and inspect the bearings.

Loved. No very much loved the video. Maybe just for me. Please just more info on things like tools, sealants, flushing items like mineral spirits but what are the various others. The lower unit workbench holder. Loved that. So just a tad more time on those. You may not think important. But a lot of people want the whole list. Like Me. I just now will spend more time looking for the items you discussed.

The work rack is fabricated by Kerr Marine Tools, Florida. They are awesome. Usually the primary sealant that I use for this type of work is Permatex Anaerobic. In most cases using a sealant is not necessary, but on older units with advanced corrosion on the outer casing, the sealant helps. As for tools, the tools we used in this video we a range of tools from specialized tools that we make in house to commonly used automotive and everyday tools off the hardware store shelf. The solvents I'd recommend for this type of work would include mineral spirits, but also acetone as well as either Corrosion-X or Kimball Midwest penetrating oils. Kimball is great for lighter duty work. With all of the chemicals used, I strongly recommend some level of PPE/gloves/eye protection etc. along with working in a very well ventilated space. I kept the fans off for most for some or all of the video to keep background noise to a minimum, but normally I keep the air moving in any enclosed work space.

Awesome video! I recently upgraded my motor from Mercury 150hp two stroke to a Suzuki 250hp four stroke. Do I have to upgrade my complete SeaStar hydraulic system can handle the 250HP motor and if so, which do you recommend? Please cause currently it’s leaking hydraulic fluids and I’ve change the seals several times already thinking it was my ram stabilizer that causes the leakage when I put them in to tow to prevent the motor from tilting. Thank you. I really enjoyed the video and 👍 n sub.

If memory serves, most SeaStar Steering Cylinders are rated up to 300 HP for a single cylinder. However, I would strongly recommend that you contact SeaStar tech support with your cylinder model number to confirm the HP rating. The DF 250 is a fairly powerful motor, if there is still fluid leaking from the steering system, it definitely needs to be isolated and the cause of leak repaired. The overall age of the steering system components is a big factor. I mostly see saltwater boats in my boat yard and in the local conditions, Helm, hoses, cylinders have about a 15 year maximum service life before they are either needing to be replaced or are on borrowed time

@@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631 Thank you for replying. I’ve had the seals replace several times and keeps leaking so I’m probably gonna replace the entire steering. Hopefully won’t have to replace my tilt steering wheel. It’s not that big of a boat, it’s only 21 feet and being a inflatable RIB boat, very light and from 150 to 250, gets on plane very quickly. Thank you sir.

Your video is well done. Walked and talked through the process so that most folks who've been swinging wrenches for any length of time should be able to figure it out... That being said, Ive got a 1999 Yamaha F100 that must have an internal leak in their PTT cylinder... It has no sign of exterior fuid loss... My boat is at the marina, so I'm not sure what size wrench to purchase from your website... Would you know off hand what size I'd need to purchase? Thanks in advance, Norm M.
@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631
@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631 Ай бұрын
Hey Norm, the wrench for the F100 would be OST-0022, 47mm spanner. It fits both the outer and inner caps. I have seen many of these cylinders over the years which have zero external/visible leakage, but the inner seals are damaged and causing the cylinder to leak down. One way or another your ptt unit sounds like it needs a look at the internals.

Fwiw, rather than using PEX and vis e-grips to keep the motor from moving, I cut a piece of PVC pipe, and cut a slot in it the length of it, then sanded its edges and put it over the shaft, using a clean rag to ensure the shaft didn't get nicked. It worked very well.

I always wonder why so many people don’t grease or anti seize components when putting unit back together including the entire shaft. Is there a reason not to do that ?
@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631
@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631 Ай бұрын
I put grease on pretty much everything unless it is specified not to do so. Anti seize is also a good product. I have no idea why some people do or do not do certain things, but, to me, grease is one of the most important parts I can think of in terms of preventative maintenance.

Question: I noticed that you were turning the wheel in one direction you said 30 turns I believe. How can the wheel turn that many tiems in one direction? Is it because you have the tube on the actual steering rim in from of the outboard? 2. Is there any case that turning the steering wheel in one direction that many times would damage the steering system? i have the bubble purge G2 and a 19 foot Stratos bass boat with a sea star steering rim Suzuki DF200 a outboard (200hp inline 4) . My steering is really bad and i can turn the outboard with my hand. I cannot take it out safely until this is done and i just want to be 100% sure I am not doing it wrong.
@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631
@outboardst.comoutboardspec8631 Ай бұрын
Once the bleeder valves on the cylinder are opened up, the helm will be allowed to turn infinite rev's in both directions since the steering system has no resistance, its just cycling fluid. With the G2 kit you should be able to get the air out of the system fairly quickly and then you either have a steering system that can pass testing and is ready for the water or you have a system that still needs further repairs. The first step is always to purge the air from the system and verify that there is enough fluid to be able to build and sustain hydraulic pressure. So, if you have removed the air from your steering system, and you are still able to push the motor side to side there is definitely still a problem somewhere, which will need to be isolated. The problem you are describing is often caused by malfunction in valves in the back of the helm which are responsible for managing hydraulic pressure as well as locking out feed back coming from the motor. Next time you push on the motor, keep your eye on the steering wheel. If you push on the motor, the motor moves and the steering wheel starts turning at the same time, it is likely that the valves in the helm are not seating correctly. Occasionally, the cylinder can either develop internal pitting or the piston seal can crack. Both conditions would allow fluid "blow-by" and the cylinder would not be able to hold pressure in part or all of its range. It is very important to isolate the failed component accurately so as to avoid wasting money on replacing parts that may not be damaged. We sell a diagnostic kit which makes isolating these issues much much faster.

Hello! Could I ask you about the pinion under the top of gear in the oldest Yamaha 30 was located flat bearing, but modern motors don't contain this bearing. And next if pinion gear didn't have top bearing why does the vertical shaft have conical bearing except ballbearing? Conical bearing shold have pair of counterforce! But modern motors of 30 hp didn't have counter force for conical bearing! Please describe what the hell is going on with marketing?

why did you have to remove the water pump ? why not just the shift shaft and bearing carrier ? also at 40:30 did you bend the tab in the wrong direction ? how does bending it forward stop the ring from coming loose, shouldnt it be bend over one of the slots in the carrier nut ?

You'd be correct, all of the above. I recommended new bearings etc, but gear set, pinion, was ok, shift good, minimal wear on clutch dog. All bearings were definitely suspect. Owner said keep it cheap, bare minimum, which is what I did. At the time he was going to sell the boat, but decided to keep. 100+ hrs later, still good.

During the process of rebuilding I had a leave my parts on my bench, and believe it or not, I think a mouse stole one of the pins from the spring and ball bearing piston as they were loose on a paper town on the bench. There were mouse dropping on the bench (old house joys). Does anyone know where I can get the pins that go inside the springs that sit on the ball bearings. I had everything I needed to reassemble, now I don't. Thanks in advance.

But, using the spare 20amp fuse everything worked. Of course the outstanding issues is why did the fuse blow in the first instance. Thanks though.
