I was astonished to see this station when I sped through it on the Trans-Pennine Express to Cleethorpes on Thursday 3rd October 2024. I couldn't understand why we didn't stop at a town as large as Rotherham when the map showed that we were going to go there. Having read up about it I now understand, but it is a pity that such a big railway station with several platforms has been reduced to a shadow of its former self.

My lovely 159s ❤ Still the best thing that I've driven out of 400s, 442s (Pigs), Disastros 🤮 and 170s (100mph but 90 if joined to a 159). I have always detested BR Blue. Some of the early colour schemes were beautiful in green with their whitewall tyres and whiskers. I mocked up a picture of a 159 in that scheme on an early form of Photoshop. It looks quite good 😁

I am happy to say that I visited Lincoln before the closure of Saint Mark's station, seventies or eighties, I can't remember exactly. It was great (as an enthusiast) to have two nice stations so close, but for efficiency and passenger convenience, centralising on Central was the right decision, (forgive the pun). Central is a fine example of Victorian railway architecture. It is also nice to see the Swindon DMU, they had some character compared with Derby or Metro-Cammell sets.

@@trainman86trainstramsandmore it is strange how Standardisation was the principle behind the Riddles/ Cox/ Bond steam locos but for DMUs and diesel locos there was wild proliferation of different classes, often with incompatible MU connections. In its favour the hydraulic DMUs with the corridor connections through the cabs, on the North and West route had the most beautiful two tone horns I ever heard.

1:04 This made me laugh, I knew exactly what you were on about 😂😂 As someone from Trinidad, and a fanatic about its railways, I can say that is true. The Trinidad Government Railways (est. 1876), which had been failing financially since the early 1950’s bought 2 Class 109’s (50415 and 50419) second hand from BR in 1962, renumbered 1 and 2. It was meant as a last ditch effort by the TGR to cut operating costs. They actually worked exceptionally well, cutting much time off passenger trains originally hauled by 4-6-0/2-8-0’s and GE 44 tonners (yes, 44 tonners), proving very comfortable and reliable locomotives. Unfortunately, they came way too late to make much impact on the already “deficit ridden” railway. The government finally decided in 1964 that the railway had to go, and on the 28th December 1968, it closed for good, the last 109 working up until a few days prior. The two Wickhams languished in the Port of Spain rail yard for a couple of years after, until being scrapped in the early 70’s. Part of the coach sections were used as people’s homes, and the front sections of the powered units were cut off and welded back to back and used as a cafe in Morvant up until that itself was scrapped in the 80’s, photographs of which exists.
