Going back to kauai after after 20yrs, is it the tunnels beach or Haena beach that has dramatic high mountain backdrop ? will be really helpful if u can answer...
@MattsTravelTips2 күн бұрын
Yes!! That’s the beach! My favorite beach on the island. Incredible for snorkeling in the summer:) Ke’e beach (within the state park, which now requires reservations) has equally stunning cliffs as a backdrop, also has excellent snorkeling, and is right at the entrance to the Kalalau Trail. Note with Tunnels…parking can be tricky. Get there early or consider taking a shuttle if your hotel offers one:) Hope this helps!! Have the best trip. All the best:) - M

Again, so glad you liked it. You’re so very welcome. The food spots are great. I love them all. The Yakisoba at Gion Tanto (there can be a line) and Ebisu-gyoza Nakajima (the black rice 🤤 haha) are probably my two must hits. But I really love them all haha. You can’t go wrong. There are about 15 great places that didn’t make the vid just for time. Gion Sushi Matsumoto is very special, but spendy. My local friend recommended sushitetsu (and it was really excellent for the price). In general, Kyoto isn’t as much of a sushi town as Tokyo. If you’re going to Tokyo as well and want to really splurge on a Michelin star sushi meal while in Japan, I’d do it there. Some life-changing restaurants there. But the food in Kyoto is wonderful. DEFINITELY hit Tonkatsu Daiki in Osaka if you go there. Truly amazing (get there when they open) Also, in Tokyo…down a lane in Omoide Yokocho (“piss alley”) in Shinjuku, is one of my favorite spots. Hot soba noodles with tempura. Wander around and you’ll find it. Like 5 seats at a counter. Cheap. Delicious. And all of piss alley has incredible yakitori. Now I’m hungry 😂 Enjoy!!!

Is Honolulu the only place u can go without renting a car i dont like responsibility of rentals
@MattsTravelTips5 күн бұрын
Honestly, even in Honolulu, unless you stay entirely in the Waikiki area or at a resort like Turtle Bay (which I do love), renting a car is the best way to really explore the island(s). Uber is quite expensive, and while there is public transportation (buses), it takes longer and doesn’t offer as much flexibility. But it’s not impossible. On Kauai’s North Shore, for example, Hanalei Colony Resort had a shuttle service that made it easy to get around the North Shore spots, so that’s an option in some places. But seeing the whole island would be trickier. I’m sure there are group tours that organize trips to different parts of the island, I’ve just never really visited Kauai in that way (or Oahu…where I spent my childhood summers…so we just always had a car) Another idea might be Lanai, which is less crowded but has shuttle services around key spots. It’s beautiful. Just be aware, it’s quite a bit more expensive than the other Hawaiian islands due to limited luxury resorts. Also the Kāʻanapali area on Maui wouldn’t really require a car. But you’d have a harder time seeing some of Maui’s gems (like the road to Hana or Iao Valley, etc). Ultimately, to fully experience the islands (Oahu or Kauai), having a car really does make things easier. But it’s not impossible. Hope this helps and isn’t more confusing or discouraging! All the best :) - M

Nice cinematography, and I agree that Kyoto is a destination to be experienced. However, Kyoto has terrible public transport. The buses are overcrowded, and the train doesn't take you to any famous sites. FOOD FOR THOUGHT- When I was in a restaurant, a Japanese man overheard me telling the chef that his miso soup was "Nippon Ichi" -the best in Japan. "He asked me how I knew this. I said that I had been all over Japan, and this was my favourite. Then he said, "Call it YOUR FAVOURITE miso soup in Japan." Good point, I thought to myself, and from that day onward, I rarely use the term best when describing my opinion of something. *Kinkakuji? I don't understand this recommendation; it was rebuilt in the 1950s, but If you must go, you should tie it into your trip to Ryoanji-zen Rock Garden and Arashiyama. Really? The Kimono Forest? It is a cheesy 30-second visit to somebody's lawn display. It is very disappointing but suitable for a pic on social media... *Please explain how far it is from place to place. Kyoto is a very spread-out city, so the distance to the destination would help. *If you go early to visit everything, what do you do during peak afternoon times? *Please don't call it Ponto-cho "alley." It is a geisha district. *Gion Tanto is a decent restaurant, but be prepared to wait in line with only other foreign visitors. *Decent Raman picks. Well done. However, the Kyoto station building has an excellent selection of ramen shops. *Yakiniku Hiro is a chain, but you are guaranteed a high-quality meal. * Kyoto is not a sushi city because it is far from the sea, and Sushi Tetsu is one of the most helpful "Tripadvisors." *Chau Chau gyoza is another "tourist favourite." You will have no problem finding it because there is usually a rowdy bunch of tourists* queuing. *Roan Kikunoi is a ver good restaurant with 2 Michelin stars but is far overshadowed by the main redoubt Kikunoi Honten which has 3 Michelin stars and is rated as one of the best restaurants in the world. *Camelia Is an excellent choice. They offer a very authentic and fun experience. *Philosophers' path is on the way to Ginkakuji, "The Silver Pavilion." It would have been nice to mention that. The day trips are a good idea, but only if you have more than a few days in Kyoto. The problem with these videos is that the presenter is too busy trying to find "little gems" but usually ends up relying on the most well-known spots due to lack of time, funds or laziness. Overall, it's a nice video, but Tip #13 is his best tip. Get lost; do nothing, stroll along and even picnic on the riverbanks, but experience Kyoto. And if you want to meet locals, stay away from Social media-recommended "hidden gems."
@MattsTravelTips7 күн бұрын
Wow! You’re clearly very familiar with Kyoto and its many sides! I appreciate the detailed feedback. This video was filmed over 16 days (in addition to a month of prep and a month of editing) and reflects my favorite places and experiences after many visits over the years. There was definitely no laziness involved in creating it haha! I think Kyoto has so many layers that everyone’s take will naturally be different, but I’m very glad Tip #13 resonated with you-sometimes getting lost really is the absolute best way to enjoy it. Thanks again for watching! All the best:) - M
@kyotopmac7 күн бұрын
Hello Matt, I was not trying to demean you or call you lazy. I know how much work goes into shooting and editing videos. I was generalizing my experiences working with mass media as a fixer, and from watching many "the best...", "Must see, "and "Must do" videos, I have wasted my time watching. I have lived in Kyoto for 31 years and have seen the city change drastically, some for the best but a lot for the worse. It first began with the "Yokoso Japan" campaign, which showed the world that it was a safe and not-so-expensive travel destination. The next was the coming of Social media, which stifled the sense of adventure, and people became solely dependent on algorithms on big platforms where anyone could air their grievances about businesses and services. (deserved or not). It also created a lot of "experts," albeit self-proclaimed "well, well-travelled" millennials, now Gen Z-ers. This is why I can be pretty critical of videos. Mainly when they deal with the multi-layered onion like in Japan and especially Kyoto. Who knows, we may bump into each other the next time you are here. There is a good chance if you are wandering around the geisha districts.

I’d love to bump into anyone who know the city as well as you do!! Jealous of how much time you’ve lived there! My father used to live there, but that was back in the 60s haha. So a lot has changed since then, certainly. Thanks for the thoughtful comments:) Cheers!

Osaka is great too, I usually do it in day trips from Kyoto, but it’s worth spending more time there to see everything it has to offer. Nara is an easy day trip. And Hiroshima/Miyajima can be done in one day, but it’s a long day haha. So one night there might be less hectic. 16 days will give you plenty of time to get a flavor of each place. Hi Matt! You hit every great spot in Kyoto and also briefly, Kansai. I lived for over ten years in Kyoto, just below Kiyomizo Temple right on the Kamo River. That was quite a few years ago now, so I just wish I could revisit and do some of your recommendations for the delicious food! I'm curious about how long you visited and researched for this quality video. Just wonderful! Thanks so much!

Hey thanks so much for the great, thoughtful comment! I’m so jealous you lived there!! As for how long it took me to make this…this was my 9th visit to Japan, so I’ve gotten to know Kyoto quite well over the years…but filming these is different that just visiting haha. It involved about a month of prep (planning what I wanted to feature, writing my script…which always shifts a bit after I get there and discover new fun things to feature), and the actual filming took 2 weeks. But filming puts me on a different timetable. For example, I would dedicate hours to filming a temple or shrine that most people would visit in 30 minutes, just to make sure I got the right shots. So…it was a labor of love haha. I’m also a one-man-band out there (though this time, my wonderful mother joined me and learned how to use a gimbal to get many of the shots you see of me walking. So that certainly helped haha. Eventually, if I had a crew with me, I could film them quicker. Hope that wasn’t too long winded an answer! Thanks for reaching out!! All the best:) - M
