It's a shame whenever I hear "long time fans" casually disregard Daggerfall's story because they "Don't care for the older style presentation" or say "Elder Scrolls games don't have interesting stories." On one hand I get that 4 out of 5 main entries feeling samey and repetitive could breed a specific mindset in most players, even people who claim to be fans of the games. But on the other hand it legitimately devalues a series to essentially lump them all into the same standard while being willfully ignorant of their full contents.

So random side quests in arena were considered the most popular and best part of the game by players? No wonder Bethesda is still so reliant on the radiant quest system these days.

Honestly, I think the game is just a bit unfinished. The technical issues, some messy design choices, this game could've used another 6-12 months honestly. It's better now after bug fixes, but I think Pieces needed more time.

I would highly recommend, that you use your Script, working it a little bit over and make a big, colourfull book out of it. This Video is truely amazing, BUT!! Im just imagening that i would have a big Hardcover fantasy book full of your enthusiastic sentences and neat expressions about the world, the gameplay elements and so on. Im totally serious, i would buy your daggerfall book!

On the note of bad voice acting, I think it harms AOTD more than RE1 because Resident Evil has more of a B movie element to it with its hokey science angle. AOTD is clearly trying to be a more serious Lovecraftian story, so bad voice acting is more painful. It'd be like if Silent Hill had bad voice acting.

Is it possible that we will ever see a game/mod that includes the RPG mechanics, details and lack of handholding of Daggerfall (basically everything that made Daggerfall great) made in an engine similar to that of skyrim? If anyone has the ability to make that without neutering it, I'd pay handsomely for a copy.
@Jwlar8 күн бұрын
That would be the dream for many I'm sure. Perhaps Skyblivion will be a step in the right direction in that regards, as they're bringing back some more of the RPG elements from TES4, albeit those were still very much watered down compared to Daggerfall.

The best description of Daggerfall I ever heard was: "The insanity that became a game!" And the reason for it it's map. Most people who are fans today started with Skyrim and some with Morrowind. So a lot the younger fans of the Franchise are not aware that Dafferfall still has the largest map of all Daggerfall games and not Skyrim. So I just can laugh about gamers who complain about boring open worls games with large maps. Because even if a lot of towns and locations looked the same in Daggerfall, the fact that such a game was even possible made us enjoy the heck out of it. And yes, it had bugs and there wasn't really a way to fix them. As the Internet wasn't really a thing at that time. To save very often was the only way to prevent to waste a lot of hours you invested in the game.

Everyone else would've stopped themselves when they realised what they had in their minds would be impractical to create, but that didn't stop them. For better or for worse, it was that undeniable ambition in the face of (nearly) impossible odds that led to this imperfect wonder of a game.

Really interesting point about "Castle Llugwych" and the decline of Celtic elements in High Rock's Breton culture in the franchise over time. While I'd argue Bretons are indeed still closely reminiscent at a surface level of groups from the British Isles, I can see (as someone who briefly studied Welsh and Scottish Gaelic) that the Celtic elements - certainly the linguistic side of it anyway - have diminished greatly since the early installments. It would've been nice to see some more of these cultural elements in the recent titles. Da iawn, ffrind!

I didn't have a moment that "broke" Starfield for me, as the thought of playing it never even crossed my mind, but I have to note that for whatever reason, the UI design of this game is extremely off-putting to me. I can't tell what exactly about it causes this effect, but I have never seen a UI this ugly in my life. Even Arena's 1994 interface, which looks extremely primitive now, is infinitely more appealing. Seeing Starfield's UI makes me want to look away from the screen.

The fact that Barret just gives you the ship was an immediately red flag - I dont know how that got through the writing room and into the game. On my first playthrough I roleplayed a veteran medic (since i picked medic as a class) that had had enough of war. I decided to steer away from anything that put me into serving the government, and only did exploring and small jobs to help "the little guy" - the only government job I did was the Crimson Fleet quest.. but I was forced into that.. and killing pirates became my characters outlet for grieving losing my wife. Thus I completed the game without doing the vanguard or space cowboy faction. And at that point I actually did like the world building. My understanding of the world, from not interacting deeply with the factions were this: You have the UC in the middle.. they were like Space EU and outside of that were free space, which seemed like the US frontier. I saw it as some lose systems surrounding the established UC space. Then you had a few city states in the form of Hopetown and Neon. When I, in my second playthrough - discovered that UC had lost the war to Freestar... I was baffled.. when i realized how shallow the writing for both UC and Freestar was I was baffled.. on my first playthrough I thought the worldbuilding was a lot bigger and more detailed than it was. With the "Kid Stuff" perk I was constantly disappointed in what I could tell my parents.. I could not invite them to my wedding.. or say goodbye when I went to the Unity.. But my biggest grivience was when - at the funeral of Sara - Barret thanked me for "saving him" - when It never occured to me that was the choice I made.. at that point I knew that the outcome of not rushing to Sara's side was that Barret would have died.. when I at the time thought that the choice was between losing "my loved one" and or losing the artifacts. I stayed to save our progress.. not save Baret. If the game had had it so it was Barret that got choked by the Hunter, the dialog made sense.. but from my perspective. He was never in danger. Its sad.. because I do feel.. with a little bit better "if this then that" writing.. it could have been a lot better.. and if the world building had been a lot more deep it would have been a decent game.. but as of now.. i think its a 5/10 - not terrible.. not bad.. just "meh"

Yeah in Skyrim they voice it and say it as "Nee-Sis" basically. Which is basically how I always figured it was. Silent G like in Gnome. Though it also stuck out to me just because it's the one obviously Dunmeri settlement that doesn't "sound" House Dunmeri to me. Like if Gnisis was actually named as some Nordic Village (and maybe Khuul as well) it would have made a lot more sense. But considering Gnisis is a major Temple site, as well as Telvanni squatter it always seemed like it was meant to be as Dunmeri as Molag Maar or Seyda Neen.

See, THIS is the type of game that would greatly benefit from a remake that focuses on retaining the story and ironing out the kinks of the original, while keeping its fuk quirks and ambiance. I would play this if they remade it in a modern form, similar to Skyrim.

Daggerfall is the only game from this series I genuinely respect. I've disliked Bethesda's design philosophy ever since my first encounter with Morrowind in my childhood, but even so, it's impossible not to admire the sheer ambition of TES II. The dedication to creating a realistic world with unlimited player freedom is evident in every design choice. The fact that it largely succeeded - and as far back as 1996, to boot - almost beggars belief. Sadly, the scope of Daggerfall makes it even harder for me to appreciate its successors, now that I know how Tamriel is really supposed to be like. Still, I'm glad this game exists, and that I could learn about it, even if I probably wouldn't enjoy playing it all that much.

If you ever make a Battlespire video, I will die of happiness. Battlespire is a great game sadly marred by absolutely atrocious programming. Also, this mod looks insanely good, I'm not entirely in love with the Christian/Demonic references because I think it's a shame to fall back on that and not work within the very wide boundaries of the in-game theology (especially in Morrowind, where religion is a big subject), but that detail aside, color me impressed, I'll definitely be checking it out, thanks for spreading the word!

It's really well made, I was very surprised. It's a bit confusing in places, especially as there aren't many guides online. I enjoyed my time with it. Expansion sized, only lacking a bit in quality in terms of bugginess. I totally plan on tackling Battlespire soon! The character creator is my favourite in all of TES.

What made the original alone in the dark games and even original resident evil games so memorable was the locked camera. I miss those days. What i wanted was for them to just take the original Alone in the Dark and update the polygons and other graphics. that's it. This game changes too much by removing what i liked the most about it.. the fixed cameras and tank controls.

Haven't seen anyone say it yet, (Someone probably did and I might've just missed it), but in Skyrim both the windhelm guards and the actual cornerclub bartender pronounce it "Knee-sis," I.E. "The dark elves get their drinks down at the new knee-sis corner club... why they can't just call it a tavern is beyond me," an actual line of dialogue the windhelm guards can say, granted, unless you're playing with a mod like Sensible Greetings or More To Say it's one of those throwaway lines that you probably would miss even if you managed to trigger it in vanilla Skyrim. Also ALSO, nords in Morrowind have vaguely celtic (Irish and scottish) accents, where-as in Skyrim their accent has shifted to be more specifically vaguely scandinavian instead, where-as now the vaguely psuedo-scottish accents usually belong to either certain dunmer on Solstheim or certain imperials, (think General Tullius and Captain Veleth's "Liam Neeson impersonator" accents,) so it's entirely possible that pronouncing knee-sis is a new lore thing or else even something like how in SKyrim you'll here native nords pronounce names like Talos two different ways; "Tah-lohs," and "Tah-loss."

While they spelt it differently, Gneiss is a type of rock. (Pronounced "nice") And there are a few other things like that all through Morrowind (think of Caldera, which is from volcanoes in geology, etc). So while I cannot prove they wanted it pronounced the same, I'll wager it's pronounced the same as it would be in geology. (I have a BS in Environmental Geoscience)

i still come back to this game every few years. and i like it as much as i did in 2006 when i got it.oblivion was okay and skyrim sucked in my opinion. skyrims lack of rpg and skilling to become god like turned me off after only a few hours. if a game of this type has few skills or limited movement improvements to train for there is nothing to work towards and the game becomes boring.

You may have missed the "real" ending where you fight the Daedric god, the journal makes no mention of this ending, and just says that the mission is complete after you beat lucifer. I was impressed with the quantity of stuff for a team of 2 modder, but I understand what you mean about the boredom. There was a ton of backtracking and getting lost.
