When did you start your Camino? March to April? I am staring my Camino Frances on April 1 2025 and I am getting excited! wondering how cold it will be and if I should pack a down jacket. Also, we reserved our rooms and asked that breakfast be added. Do you recommend breakfast at hotel or Are there little cafes that one will pass?
@Michael_Matthias8 күн бұрын
@@LaPrimaClaudia In 2024 we started walking on 21st April. I think that starting on 1st April you will need a warm jacket. We've had really cold weather as far as Leon in late May for example. Yes, most days you will find street cafes open by 7 am, but not always. Leaving Hornillos for example, if you don't get breakfast where you stay you will need to walk 20 km to Hontanas to get breakfast.

Greetings Michael and Lynn. Thank you so much for sharing your Camino experience. My husband and I will be doing the Camino Frances in April and May 2025. Did you use a travel planner to book your rooms. We have no idea of the process and would like your opinion on how best to ensure accommodations. Thank you again for your wonderful channel. Best wishes to the two of you!
@Michael_Matthias4 ай бұрын
The last few times that we have walked, we booked all of our accommodation before we left. It was a mix of Booking.com and contacting the places directly by email. We did this as we now prefer double rooms with our own bathroom, in albergues if we can, and we know how far we can walk each day and where we want to stay. In 2022 we noticed that in a number of the small hotels where we stayed there were people from tour companies, so before we left for 2023 in Portugal we got quotes from one of the big tour companies, just for accommodation, not for meals or baggage transfer. The quote came back about 3 times what we paid by booking directly. I did the same thing for the Camino Frances and the same result. So, you do pay a premium for letting someone else do the booking, but on the positive side there are no hassles for you to do the bookings. On our first Camino in 2014 we only booked St Jean and just stayed in albergues sleeping in bunk beds and it was fine. Jump forward 10 years and the Camino is much busier in April/May than 10 years ago, but my observation is that it is the double rooms that appear to be booked ahead, and you generally can get an albergue bed if you book ahead a day or so. Also, there are many new places opening up each time that haven’t found their way into the guide books yet. Apps like Camino Ninja are pretty good at listing what accommodation is available in each town and village. Many places respond to phone and whatsapp requests even weeks ahead. If you want, I can send you a list pf places where we stayed the last couple of walks, but it will include a number of long (30 km) stages. Hope you have a great walk.

Hi Michael and Lynne, although we have been walking Caminos since 2006 we have never conquered the problem of what to cover our packs with or bag them when they are checked luggage. We cable tie the zips ( at least you know if someone has accessed you pack) tighten all our straps as best we can, ensuring no errant straps I still dread the thought collecting our packs minus a strap or two. Do you put your packs in some sort of bag for the flight? I dream of a carry on but it’s difficult with poles.

At about 1:59 there's a sign for Pereje ( which I think Michael misprounces). But that's not why I write. Rather, the defaced sign is just one of MANY examples that you'll see beginning as you near the western border of Castille and Leon and even more frequently after you enter Galicia. I saw this particular one in June 2024, and you'll see it in the August 2019 image on "street view" on Google Maps (in that picture it has been hand-altered to "Perexe," which I imagine is either a Gallego or Leonese spelling). When you get into Galicia, where all signs seem to have been changed into the Gallego language, it's not the language that's being hand-changed, but rather the format in which the language is expressed. For example, in Galicia you'll see the signs with the name of the Miño River (and other words that have a tilde) changed to the Portuguese-style spelling of Minho. I imagine it's some sort of a barely-below-the-surface culture war.
