My garden cleanup has been hit & miss this year. We also had a lovely fall, so I waited until much later to start. Then the cold and rains hit! We've even had snow a couple of times. There's no way I'll work outside when it's in the low 30s with a 'feels like' temp in the teens. I usually just do a chop and drop and add coffee grounds, torn up pieces of cardboard and the previous year's dried leaves I'd raked up. What got done will have to do for now. I'm more concerned about keeping the bird feeders and their water dishes taken care of than dead/dying plants. I have plenty of seeds to restart things that don't come up next year. So sad that you didn't get a good sweet potato harvest. Maybe use duct tape to keep the plastic together since you want to replace it. If not, you can just cut that to open it up again. Take care of yourself and I hope you and your family have a wonderful and Merry Christmas!

It's OK to be lazy - I tell myself that frequently. With all of the damage you've had, it looks like you might have more than one groundhog, or a very fat and healthy one. It is sad that your garden didn't succeed like you hoped. You did a lot of work in it this year. I've never seen any Monarchs here even though I have the butterfly weed planted. In looking at my weather diary, we haven't had any rain here since last month, and it looks like we'll stay dry through the first part of Nov. We did have a few nights in the low 30s, so I did some prep then for freezing, but now we're having days in the mid to high 70s and a few listed in the low 80s. Do I clean things up or just keep them watered and let the bees enjoy the flowers. The annual flowers I cut back are showing new leaves. It's definitely a weird growing season this year. I did go ahead and harvest my sweet potatoes and have them in the garage to start their curing. Hopefully you'll still be able to harvest some of yours. Each year is a learning year in one way or another - what to do and also what not to do.
@theladysgardenandhomeАй бұрын
Well, I’ve never seen any other groundhogs except Fatty, and he is very fat! I have 2 rabbits, mice and squirrels too so it’s not all him. The lack of monarchs makes me sad. I hope they come back! The lack of rain has made some gorgeous days but I’m concerned we’ll be in a major drought soon. Being lazy lately has kept me keep things in perspective and also has helped mend my back! Well, there’s always next year.

Good Tips! I'd only seen those large heavy hoops, so the ones you're using look like something I could handle. This is the first year I'm actually trying to grow something in the fall/winter. I'm now listed in Zone 7a instead of the 6b/7a 'border'. When I was at Lowe's getting mums the other day, I saw they still had a few veggies out and bought some Romaine Lettuce and Broccoli, so will see how they do. I'm betting I'll eat the lettuce before the end of next month. The Collard Greens I'd planted some time ago still look good so hopefully that'll make it as well. Now that it's cooler, below 80, my Cherry Tomatoes have exploded and I'm harvesting at least a good size handful every day. I'll dig my Sweet Potatoes up next weekend. How are yours doing? Since I'm in the last area of Hurricane Helene's cone, which is the heavy rain and flooding area, I'll have to see how my garden survives this weekend. Hehe - did your 'magic wand' get rid of the squirrel?

@@theladysgardenandhome Are you growing your sweet potatoes in the ground or in a container? It seems they are easier to grow and especially harvest when grown in a container because you just dump it upside down on a tarp or something and go through the soil instead of digging in the ground for them. A container will also keep the groundhog away. We are 'only' 83 degrees today, however the humidity is much higher than that. But we did get some rain last night so that helps.

Thank you for sharing this information! Also, a lot of the plants we call 'WEEDS' are beneficial to us in many ways and are yummy as foods. Plantain and Stinging Nettles are the ones that I usually think about first. Plantain used to be called the soldier's plant because it helped stopped the bleeding from battle wounds. It was also used by doctors in Europe during WWI and WWII. Stinging Nettles makes a really yummy tea and also a soup, especially when mixed with onions, potatoes and carrots. Thankfully my mints and several herbs have enjoyed our hot weather and have exploded in my garden. Yes, they have a lot of nutritional benefits. I'll mix and match several of them and make iced teas and drink them all day during the summer. I'll dry them for hot teas in the winter. In the past, the people didn't have a pharmacy on every corner, so they went to nature for their healing needs. Unfortunately, we've lost a lot of that knowledge and just take a pill of some sort with a long list of side effects. Everything we really need for our wellbeing is here with us - we just have to look for it and be willing to learn.

Thankfully my mints and most of my herbs are surviving, and I have basil galore. My cherry tomatoes are starting to flower so all of these things are good.
